It must be as the weather gets colder all League fans decide to become doom and gloom merchants...
Okay lets look at some facts. First off the current AFL proposal sees the sport linking up with Westpac to take over the Stadium, as mentioned before by a poster and even in the News Corp article, no bank will take over an asset where its debt is controlled by a major competitor, and the ANZ wont be in any rush to hand that debt over whilst they now know there is a demand to buy the stadium.
Secondly, even if the AFL took over ANZ Stadium, it wouldn't screw the NRL immediately. All the previously existing contracts would remain, meaning the AFL would have to continue to pay the NRL for games like Origin and Grand Finals up till 2012, and continue to pay clubs until their current deals expire.
Thirdly, ANZ Stadium currently doesn't pay 'huge' amounts to each club to have them host their matches at the venue. What they do is they underwrite a minimum of $100,000 in revenue for hosting at the venue. This equates to about 6,100 tickets sold at the average price of $15. Not a bad thing to have as an underlying minimum but a clear sign at how lazy some clubs are.
If the current tenants were forced out, only really the Bulldogs (currently no home) and Wests Tigers (high costs associated with Leichhardt) would be in a bad place. Dragons will have Kogarah back next year, Souths would move back to the SFS which itself offers reasonable incentives these days as it chances content for its members, and the Eels only play 2 games at ANZ anyway.
