Shocking update this evening. At least the Knights will be there for him through recovery - given they have done that for Packer it is a certainty in this case.

A guy that plays for the rugby union team I used to play for had a very serios spine injury a few seasons before I joined. He can walk with the crutches - but is confined to a wheelchair most of the time. He still manages the team and always seems like a really upbeat guy. He has also completely retained his independence - works a 9 to 5 and drives. So there is some light at the end of the tunnel for Alex I hope.

Did everyone know the seriousness of it immediately? Or only those ones closest at first...and those of us watching it on tv because we saw it up close and personal.

Smith was doing his job firstly...Smith is known for his coolness under pressure and he was still playing the game so to speak UNTIL like a lot of the other players, realized it was very serious. Some people are so ready to pour all their hate onto the man...clouds the vision. And when it was ready to start he resumed playing the game...just like all the other players.

Shouldn't they have called the game off? Wouldn't that have made it better - been the right thing to do? No, because that's not what happens.

Did you carry on watching the rest of the game? Bet you weren't the only one...who should be calling who callous?

The reff tried to tell him to back off and even pointed out it could wait until the player he was standing right next to was seen to buy medical staff.

Valid point about other penalties however the single mindedness that makes him a great player also made him a certified 100% merkin in these circumstances

Tragic event. Hope he is in great hands and is able to recover from such a horrible injury.

Some of you assholes should be ashamed of yourselves.

Seriously though that update makes you step back and think.

This is why we can never really begrudge any of these guys for taking the best money they can as soon as they can

You guys are unreal. As if he was only worried about the penalty. Get a grip.

He made a point. That's all. He's not a f**kin monster.

Just watched Fox Sports honing in on Smith's little effort. You're right he's not a F**kin monster. He's just a monster. To be the other type of monster you need balls

Cameron smith is a world class f**kwit, and his behaviour last night was disgusting.

He argued the point while McKinnon lay there saying he couldn't feel his legs, and then only after being told to he on by the ref carried on as soon as the bloke left the field.

There was no bigger asshole in league than smith prior to last night but his display only hammered the point home

How hard would it have been to keep quite wait to see how badly injured the player was before mouthing off to the ref about what your opinion of the tackle.

Yes he ducked his head but still the player placed his hands between the legs and lifted its an illegal act and has gone horribly wrong.

No question there was no malcious intended but Smiths actions or should I say attitude showed no class at all when done you toss well done.

Well we don't need anymore evidence than last night to prove Smith is a d*ckhead. Thank God he's staying with Melbourne for the rest of his days and not polluting any other club. I'm glad the news tonight picked up on his whinging and showed the world what a turd he is. That was possibly the worst case of sportsmanship we've ever witnessed on a footy field. I'm so glad he tainted whatever credibility he had left. That effort last night will haunt him for the rest of his life.

Nice.

Cannot get over how much of a dead shit Massoud is. He's got zero class.

While I agree with the whole no due process point, Massoud and his buddies at the Tele last year were on the other side of the argument last year about the Sharks competing in the finals, ban them!

A week break to come to terms with what has happened and help him get his head and emotions in check away from media and a hostile crowd isn't actually a bad thing for McLean, it is tragic what has happened and all parties involved will no doubt feel it's impact for quite some time.
