No one player, no matter how good they are should get special treatment like Johns gets. He is not bigger than the game. If Warrington make the GF and he plays instead of coming back, that should be the end of his rep career, at least for Australia.

It don't care if it's his only chance to play over there. He's had plenty of chances in the past but hasn't taken them. He could play there next year after he retires from rep footy, or he could play the year after when he retires from the Knights.

He is only one player. RL has survived in the past without him, it will survive now and in the future without him. As good as he is, he shouldn't be allowed to cheapen the international game. No player should.

Guess Joeys chances of being captain are now gornski's, not that he had much chance anyway.

But doesn't that strike you as odd....

I mean if he's too tired to play for the Kiwis, why is he heading over to the ESL to play more games?

Johns shouldn't be allowed to play in the tri nations.. If it was someone like Bailey or Fitzgibbon or Minichiello etc, then they would be ruled out for the series and someone would take their spot. Australia has plenty of quality half backs who will do the job. Forget about him and let him play out his 'dream' to play in the ESL.

If Faumuina's team made it to the SLGF wouldn't he miss the same game as Joey is going to miss?

Yes but Sione said that he wouldn't be participating in the Tri-Nations whatever happens in the ESL.

What about players who retire from rep footy and then come back out of retirement and play again. Should they be considered?

Or players that sign to play in england for a season, missing all rep games for that year because generally players playing overseas dont get picked. Then come back to the NRL. Should their rep career be over?

Shouldnt rep games be the best player for the position that is available to play. Joey made his choice and i guess its upto the league wether or not they include him in the tri nations. Im betting they will. I will even bet he will take over the captaincy when he returns replacing locky. Time will tell I guess.

They should move the date for the tri-nations to suit Joey, because he's above the game of Rugby league, and he can do anything he likes. He's so great that he's probably even above the law, I bet if Joey commited murder tomorrow they'd just arrest George Carmont for it even though George was sitting at home watching Huey's cooking adventures with his mum at the time.

You just said no player should get special treatment. So why would Johns be treated any differently to the players of the past who have withdrawn from test matches for non-injury reasons?

He is only one player. RL has survived in the past without him, it will survive now and in the future without him. As good as he is, he shouldn't be allowed to cheapen the international game. No player should.

Yet you don't have a problem with any of the players doing so?

Johns will defintiely get picked. If they aren't dropping players like Wing when he has been no where near his best then they surely won't drop Johns.

I really dislike this in players. Have the strength of your convictions. If you retire, then retire. There is enough depth in RL in Australia to cover any player retirement, and as such if a player retires the selectors should move on.

I wouldn't bet good money on that second part.

There's a story on the Superleague site where Johns says that Bennett supported him in his decision, to possibly miss one game in order to stay match fit for the last three games and final. If the coach was happy with it, isn't it time we all got over it?

www.superleague.co.uk said:
Andrew Johns got the backing of Australia coach Wayne Bennett to take up his short-term stint in England, the player revealed on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old Newcastle Knights scrum-half, widely acknowledged as the greatest player in the modern game, has joined Warrington for the last six weeks of the engage Super League season and said he will put club before country.

Australia’s opening Gillette Tri-Nations match against New Zealand in Sydney on October 15 clashes with the Super League Grand Final and, if the Wolves reach Old Trafford, Johns is prepared to temporarily turn his back on his country.

“I take great pride in playing for Australia and I always love touring England,” said Johns, who has been named in Bennett’s initial train-on squad.

“The crowds are great and the football is really challenging. I spoke to Wayne Bennett about it before I came and he was really positive about the opportunity.

“What would he rather me do, come over here and stay match-hardened or have five weeks to myself over there where who knows what I’d be up to? It’s better to come over here and keep playing.”

Johns, who has won 18 caps and was a member of the Kangaroos’ World Cup-winning teams of 1995 and 2000, trained with Warrington for the first time today (Wednesday) and will go straight into the team for Saturday’s crucial home game with champions Leeds, which is a guaranteed 13,600 sell-out.

The Wolves, a point behind third-placed Bradford, need victory to keep alive their hopes of a home tie in the play-offs.

Warrington coach Paul Cullen confirmed the former Test skipper would start the game alongside club captain Lee Briers, with fellow Australian Nathan Wood almost certain to be relegated to the bench despite a man-of-the-match performance in Sunday’s 32-22 win over Salford.

Johns suffered a shin injury in his last match of the NRL season with Newcastle on Sunday but insists there are no doubts over his fitness.

“I just copped a knee to the shin,” he said.

“It was a soft-tissue injury. I trained this morning (Wednesday) and did an hour’s ball work and there were no problems. I could play now if I had to.

“Everything went like clockwork in training. I was surprised how crisp the ball work was. They seem to play a very similar style to the way we play at Newcastle.

“It will be a matter of getting to know the calls. The hardest bit will be forming a combination with Lee.

“It’s all about sharing the ball around and working together but it worked well in training and I don’t think it will be a problem on Saturday night.

“It was great meeting all the players today (Wednesday). I didn’t understand everyone but I am sure I will get to know everyone’s name over the next couple of days. I’m really excited about playing on Saturday.”

Warrington are thought to be paying Johns around £10,000 a match but Cullen defended the club’s decision to sign the player on a contract that could last as little as three matches.

“The rules are crystal clear,” he said.

“We’ve been smart enough to get in there first and do it. We’ve been followed by a number of senior clubs. I defy anyone to tell me it’s not right having Andrew Johns playing in Super League.”

Since the move, brokered by club director Simon Moran during a casual chat with Johns’ manager at the first cricket Test at Lord’s, was announced, Bradford have signed Great Britain forward Adrian Morley and Hull have recruited New Zealand international Sione Faumuina, also on short-term deals.

Johns added: “There’s two other guys come over as well. I don’t know if they’re going to change the rules or not but as long as there are good players coming over it’s good for Super League.”

i will give you 50-1 on that happening.
Things that go against Johns :

* his age
* the fact that origin 2006 will be his last rep games b4 he retires from rep football (part of the deal with his new knights contract)
* durability..lets face it, he does know how to get injured
* Lockyer not retiring until 2009.

What does that have to do with him becoming captain? Nothing.

Where is it reported his contract with the knights stops him playing rep football after SOO 2006.
