Joey retirement rumours rife
By staff writers and wires
April 10, 2007
SPECULATION that Newcastle Knights captain Andrew Johns might retire from rugby league today is rife after the club currently conducts a press conference on his future.

Johns expected scan results on a neck injury to be known today, scans that were taken in Newcastle this morning after he sustained the injury from a collision at training last Thursday.

Spinal specialist Professor John Yeo travelled to Newcastle to view results of the scans before meeting with Johns and Knights officials.

The press conference is being held at the Knights' home ground, EnergyAustraliaStadium.

Johns has a history of neck injuries after he was forced to miss the last five matches of the 2003 season because of a bulging disc which threatened to end his career.

The two-time Premiership NRL winner is contracted to play with the Knights until the end of the 2008 season but was expected to make a decision on whether he would play on again next season midway through this year.

Johns has played club record 249 first grade games for the Knights as well as playing 23 matches for New South Wales, 21 Tests for Australia and was a member of the Kangaroos' 1995 and 2000 World Cup-winning teams.

Johns also had a brief stint with English club Warrington, where he played three matches for the Wolves in 2005.

I can't really foresee Johns turning up to a packed press conference and saying:

"Hi, yeah...I'm fine - see you all on the weekend"

However, once an egomaniac......

No one thinks that. It'll either be 'goodbye' or 'goodbye at the end of 07'.

My money is on a few more weeks on the sideline, then the rest of 2007 injury permitting on the field... Then retirement after R25/Finals.

I reckon this is a storm in a teacup, just hyped up by the media

The guy himself would know his body better than most, and he claims it is minor and wont be career threatening. I'll be surprised if he retires, but the newspapers and radio seems to have the rest of you falling of your seats

You think Johns knows more about a complex neck injury than trained doctors?

I'd be very surprised if he doesnt announce his retirement for the end of this year at the very least.

He should have come to the Broncos for the 2001 season and beyond.
Things "might" have been different!

I am glad he didnt though...winning the comp yr after yr would have been boring for the Broncos!

Johns' decision on league future delayed
10 Apr 2007
ANDREW Johns' rugby league future remained in the balance this afternoon as the Newcastle captain discussed his options with leading spinal specialist Professor John Yeo.

Johns was due to front a 1pm press conference at EnergyAustralia Stadium where the results of scans on his injured neck were to be revealed.

However, Johns' manager John Fordham addressed the gathered media to say an announcement had been delayed until 4pm.

“Andrew had a cat scan done this morning and that's been looked at by Professor Yeo and (Newcastle club doctor) Neil Halpin, with Andrew,” Fordham said.

“There are still some considerations being made about the findings of the cat scan.

“No decision has been made yet in relation to his future football career but that will be determined in the next hour or so.”

Asked if the delay meant the scan results on the former Australian captain were of more concern than initially though, Fordham said: “No, it's a process that's obviously very important because it's dealing with his ongoing footballing career.”

Johns, 32, aggravated a neck injury in a collision at training last Thursday after initially hurting it in his team's loss to Canberra last Monday.

Johns has a history of neck injuries. He was forced to miss the last five matches of the 2003 season because of a bulging disc which threatened to end his career.

The two-time premiership winner is contracted to play with the Knights until the end of the 2008 season but was expected to make a decision on whether he would play on again next season midway through this year.

What are the chance that he doesnt make up his mind..

The way things are going he will probably explain the condition of his neck then ask for a few weeks to think it over..

If they knew he was definitely retiring I'm sure it would be but who knows what going on here. Can't see him calling a press conference just to say he's alright and will be playing on. Oh wait actually I can!
