We'd be one of the most attractive coaching jobs in the game based on talent alone. All our teams below the nrl side have been killing it this year. We have been rebuilt, got brand new facilities and now are producing nrl talent better than any other club.
And then they'd look at the Gus factor ... is that a plus or a minus? Depends on the person I suppose.

Everyone seems to have the goss now but from what i was told he gave control to others at the beginning of the year (as per contract agreement) but it got to the point that he essentially had no control over the squad picked each week. His final act of defiance was picking Peach at 1.

I honestly feel for the bloke. Majority doubted his appointment & were looking for blood since day dot. Despite what others say he's done a great job of blooding the right players at the right time & our club will be better for the long term because of it.

I hope Hook gets a job at Cronulla & sacks Matty Moylan again.

Gus is a huge plus overall if you can get on with him. He has made some bad decisions around the nrl coach but he has also rebuilt this club from the ground up, our nrl team is the least successful team at the club atm. We operate like a big club now, and with us being the best placed club is WS we are only a premiership away from really being a big club.

That is what I was getting at with my Cleary comments. It was a popularity thing for whatever reason people didn't like him and results didn't matter

I have a question for those more clever than me.

If Hook didn't fulfill the KPI's within his contract (i.e. working well with other staffs) Could this mean a lesser payout from the club.

I know when working it can happen if you don't fulfill you're job description.

That's very possible and the club don't seem worried about the payout. No way it's $1m+

"if you can get on with him" is the operative phrase.

In relation to rebuilding from he ground up
Since Gus has arrived something in the order of $50m has been spent on RL at Penrith - over and above the revenues that RL generates. That includes the $22m on the "Academy" and almost $30m in losses. So with that spend it bloody well shoulld be well positioned.

He has been very fortunate to have had assets to liquidate to achieve this. They can last a while longer.

Yes we've made a big investment in the clubs future the last 9 years that's why its vital we take advantage and start generating more revenue.

Maybe it needed to be done now to stop it comming into the coaching cap that's forecast in 19 ?

Why do I get the feeling that the payout mighten be as large as predicted ?

I've read Gus spent the last 3 days negotiating a payout with Hooks manager before we fired him yesterday so now doubt its less than the full amount owed to him.

Lol. You're siding with the bloke who put everyone at the club offside by refusing to use the resources the club spent a lot of money on.

He wasnt good enough and refused the help and resources required to get the best out of this roster.

Martie has to say something, he spent years rubbishing any suggesting Hook had people offside, now he looks like an idiot.

I don't feel for hook at all, he was given every chance here to succeed. They backed him over Moylan and even gave him an extension he hadn't earned to show faith and he still remained a stubborn asshole.

Using the contract extension as an incentive to get Griffin to agree to changing his coaching practice would have been a terrible f**king idea if that is what actually happened.

I mean, basically, they would have went to Griffin in 2017 and said:

Club: We don't like the way you are coaching at the moment.
Griffin: *Monosyllabic grunt*
Club: If you don't delegate more, we can't offer you a new contract and you'll be unemployed in 2019.
Griffin: *Monosyllabic grunt*
Club: But, if you agree to delegate more in the future, you can sign an extension right now! That way, when you ignore us and just continue doing what you are doing like you always have, we have to actually sack you and pay you out in the high 6 figures, even more! Doesn't that sound like a great deal?
Griffin: Okay, I'll delegate more. Cross my heart and hope to die.
Club: Fantastic. Sign here!

He was given millions in resources and refused it to the detriment of the team.

Do you think this investment - paying out 2 years to Griffin - will generate more revenue? Even indirectly?

So far, with all the investment, the only revenues that have gone up significantly has been the NRL grant. A good rise in Membership has not translated AT ALL to game day attendances or revenue. Increases in sponsorship have not been dramatic and in any case there has been an equivalent increase in servicing costs.

The thing that has improved significantly is the NRL roster, the development systems and all things related to placing a team on the field. That has been superb.

But it is a volatile game and good structures for players, does not necessarily lead to financial stability.

Don't worry though - there will be no flagging on spending while Gus is in charge.
