The NRL best be careful

if the Storm become uncompetitive the NRL will lose the battle with the AFL for Australian domination

AFL has its fingers in every state and is growing

the NRL only has one expansion team in Australia outside the heartland

if the Storm don't perform and get eyeball across southern Australia watching NRL, the Australian market on the whole, will be dominated by AFL
They have been there for 20+ years, if they haven’t got diehard supporters by now then they never will

They probably need a lean period to see who is actually a fan and who is just on the bandwagon each year

So am I reading this correctly that the storm have asked several teams who are lower on the table if they can borrow a player for the rest of the year to help them hopefully win the premiership.

Basically saying look you teams down there are insignificant now, so sling us a player so we can be better?

Active first grade players helping a team avoid a spoon and do their best for their fans, Melbourne wants them to lend them a player so they can be better.

Seriously am I missing something or is this new levels of arrogance from them?

rules need a tweak here. I have no problem with an unwanted guy doing a mid season switch but it should really be X amount of games and then you are locked into a team for its finals campaign and can only switch for regular season if your team really wants you out or some team is missing lots of players in a given position

I think it would work to better balance the competition if it worked the other way.

With this in mind could the Knights borrow Nathan Cleary please!

Storm loaned Harry Grant to the Tigers for a season and gave them something to look forward to each week.

Shame he couldn't stay.

Sure, because they weren't using him considering Cameron Smith had his spot locked down. So they graciously loaned our Harry Grant to get more experience, so he could play better for them when Smith retired.

Mot clubs have 11-12k hardcore and 3-5k bandwaggoners it would seem.

The Melbourne Storm crowds will fall away as soon as they start finishing outside the 8

And that is a big problem for the NRL as Melbourne are the only non Heartland team in Australia

Once Melbourne Storm are ordinary; the NRL will start losing the battle with AFL as the biggest football code in Australia and that is a huge problem

So should we constantly give them a Grand Final so the game can win against AFL?

This is a stupid pursuit. I have been seeing the "AFL is WINNING" since the Swans won a Premiership. I am yet to see any significant issues in NRL because of it.

We can improve a lot of things but keeping the Storm winning isn't one of them.

You are looking at least 200k eyeballs extra on rugby league every weekend if the Melbourne Storm are playing well from people in the south (inc pubs and clubs) if Melbourne Storm are winning. Finals it goes up by approximately 400k

When you talk about those increases in viewership when it comes to TV rights; that is huge.

The NRL have been shafted by FOXtel in deals before and if their viewership isn't competitive with AFL, we will always be the poor red headed step sister.

There's enough of a supporter base down here that the game will be fine once we eventually miss the 8 for a season or two. Yes, we will see an attendance drop off - but there's no supporter base in this country that doesn't see an attendance drop off when their team isn't performing well. We had a 10k+ average in 2010 when there was f**k all

Anyway that's a bit off topic. You can write us off for the 2022 premiership - but I have little doubt that we will be competing again in 2023.

Then we need a team in Perth and Adelaide. Honestly, we can't win nationally against AFL. Alternatively, we can expand to the pacific and win viewers there.

its about now. Right now, the NRL need Melbourne Storm to get eyeballs elst they will lose market share and then corporate dollar and then revenue from tv deals

Expansion is a totally different thing
with a totally different set of consequences and massive start up costs that the NRL doesn't seem to have. So expansion is not possible with the "ordinary" finances of the NRL

I was an afl die hard until Storm joined nrl .I became a member since 99 season and I will definitely renew for next season.. I used to drive from Adelaide 5or 6 times a season for home games..

This needs its own thread, but I hate this. I absolutely hate it.

Now we're going to continue to get this absolutely ridiculous situation where top 8 teams start feasting on the carcass of teams out of the running towards the end of the year. Mmmmm let me get a Walsh, a Doueihe, an Addo-Carr...oh okay no to those, let's get a Nofoaluma.

f**k me, Nofoaluma is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2025. I thought it would only be situations like Reece Walsh, who was leaving the Warriors anyway, or Pangai Junior.

No f**king way players who are still on contract should be loaned out for finals campaigns. Especially big-name players - if you want John Smith the 2-game battler, OK. I understand your roster has been hit by injury. But not Origin players, for f**k's sakes.

not sure it matters, the Storm wont win the premiership this year with injuries and players who are going to new clubs next season already clocked off this season.
