I guess if no Clarke Haddin makes sense as a captaincy option

Haddin should be under immense pressure for his spot, however.

A bad summer here against India will put Haddin's spot right under the spotlight. We need to be absolutely sure that Haddin is over the hill though... We don't want another Wade situation, where a young keeper gets selected who isn't quite ready, and we're right back to where we started 2 years down the track. This time around.. Haddin won't be around to save us in 2 years time.

If Haddin does get the tap, I'd be tempted to go for someone like Paine. Someone who's been there before, has experience, and will most likely do a reasonable job in the mid to long term, as opposed to someone who has had 1 good shield season (like Whiteman).

Haddin and Harris are both playing the next round of the shield, so if we're without Clarke for the Gabba then I think the side almost picks itself:

1-Rogers
2-Warner
3-Doolan
4-Smith
5-
6-Watson
7-Haddin+*
8-Johnson
9-Starc
10-Harris
11-Lyon

My only question is who bats at 5? I wouldn't be surprised to see both Watson and Marsh in the same team though.

I think if Harris plays the first test, Marsh needs to play. Ease him back into it. Make sure we have plenty of bowling options.

Depends if Watson can bowl really.

I'd be seriously considering giving a debut to Joe Burns - he gets better each year.

Maybe not this Summer for Joey, maybe im a little behind, but he opened today, i remember him coming in at 4-5 before. He could well be a replacement for Rogers down the track. Nice 180 odd today.

Hughes failed again as well.

I think if Haddin is to get the chop we need to make sure his replacement is better. At the moment he is a fair distance ahead imo.

Paine has had 0 good seasons...Why is he even talked about.

Neville would be next or Hartley..

I don't think Haddin will be told his time is up. He is still a fair way ahead of anyone else.
He averages 34 which is still very good.

If Haddin can't play the 1st test due to injury I think it will be between Wade and Paine on who gets the nod.

Haddin is not "so far ahead." His last nine test innings are 0, 9, 1, 13, 3no, 22, 0, 10 and 13. His keeping is nothing special. Hartley and Nevill would be better options at present, whilst Whiteman looks a good bet for the future (wouldn't slot him in at present though).

Yeah, Wade didn't pan out last time, that doesn't mean Haddin should just be a lock. He's 37, he's done a pretty good job at different times, but outside last summer's home Ashes series he hasn't been great since, well, the previous home Ashes series - and even then he faded badly.

Someone said about Siddle, they shouldn't be picking him off his form last summer (16 wickets @ 24, pretty good). Same should apply to Haddin.

Big fan of Burns. He had a really strong season in 2011/12, a rubbish 2012/13 (like basically ever batsmen in the country), but a pretty strong year last year (averaged 45) and off to a very good start so far. Would love to see him push on from this start to the season.

Wade will be next in line (unless he starts dropping dollies again or gets injured), its the reason he is playing in these ODIs (in case Haddin in not up to it for the tests or world cup)

Cant see them bringing in someone else, they would have done it by now

The WC squad needs to be announced on January 7th, so these one dayers v South Africa are the last one day internationals before we pick our squad for the WC tournament

Maybe they want to see the serious test contenders in the shield.

Other than Hartley, I haven't seen a great deal if any of the other keeping contenders, but are they really that much better than wade??

As keepers? Yes. All of Paine, Nevill, Whiteman, and Hartley are miles better. Whiteman is the long term keeper but at 21 is he ready? Not sure. I'd rather him come in next season. Nevill and Whiteman are no mugs with the bat. Paine is handy. Harley is average with the bat but an awesome keeper.

I think Hartley is better than average. Especially over the last couple of years.

He'd be one of the form bats in that Qld side.

There is absolutely no way Hartley would average more than 20-25 at test level. That is pretty average for a keeper.

Heard him interviewed on grandstand after the game yesterday and he prefers to open now. Could be good timing for him.
