Benji was a star only a couple of years ago and I really don't get all the hate tbh.

I would be ok if he came to my club but don't see it happening.

His mrs will have to suck it up and agree to England. From all accounts she doesn't want to leave auckland

The smart thing for Benji now would be to retire and live of his mrs income and royalties from his NIB adverts.

Wests Tigers are set to demand financial compensation to allow Benji Marshall to return to the NRL, with officials advising his manager they intended to enforce a clause in his release agreement prohibiting him from playing for a rival club before 2016.

While Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer said the joint venture was not in a position to take Marshall back and chairman Mike Bailey welcomed the prospect of the star playmaker playing against them because of the interest it would generate, Fairfax Media was told the club would seek "Ben Barba-type" compensation before he could sign elsewhere.

A number of NRL and Super League clubs are believed to have already expressed interest in Marshall after he and the Auckland Blues decided over Easter to call time on his short-lived rugby union career, and Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith suggested he would be a perfect fit for the Storm.

However, the Tigers may be an obstacle to him returning to the NRL and Fairfax Media was told that they would expect any club that wanted to sign him to come to them for permission to do so.

"We don't want to make it difficult for Benji but we took him at his word and obviously six months on things have changed," a Wests official said. "It is a Ben Barba-type situation."

Brisbane paid Canterbury $300,000 to release Barba from his contract this season but it is unlikely the Tigers could expect that sort of money as Marshall had already left and they say they can not accommodate him if he wanted to join them.

Marshall repeatedly said before his departure that he could not envisage playing against Wests Tigers, despite becoming disillusioned with the club over a contract dispute and seeking a release after 11 seasons as the face of the joint venture.

However, Bailey welcomed him back to the NRL and predicted Marshall's first match against the Tigers would generate great fan and media interest.

"We have no objections to where he turns up and I wish him well on a personal and professional level in terms of being involved in the game," Bailey said. "I don't think any of us on the board, or for that matter management or our supporters, would have too much opposition to Benji coming back to rugby league.

"He's been a great player, he's given great service over the years. As we wished him well last year, we again wish him well in terms of the career decision he has at the moment.

"He's been a great contributor and I feel disappointed he hasn't been able to match the level of competence he showed early in his career in the last season with us and what has happened overseas."

The terms of Marshall's release from the New Zealand Rugby Union are believed to have been finalised and a formal announcement and press conference, with Marshall and Blues coach John Kirwan, is scheduled for Wednesday at Eden Park.

The NRL is concioius of avoiding a repeat of the fiasco that caused Israel Folau to abandon a return to the game with Parramatta and sign with the Australian Rugby Union instead after securing a release from the AFL and GWS Giants in 2012 and have encouraged NRL clubs to come up with proposals to accommodate Marshall under the salary cap.

“Benji is a wonderful player and it would be great to see him back playing in the NRL,” said NRL chief operating officer, Jim Doyle, who has a relationship with Marshall through his previous role as the chief executive of New Zealand Rugby League.

“The integrity of the salary cap is important and that must be taken into consideration but we would certainly consider any proposal from a club for Benji to return.”

Storm football manager Frank Ponissi said on Monday that the club would be interested in Marshall if they could find room for him under the cap, and Smith believes he would boost their attack.

"He is a similar style player to what Gareth Widdop was to our club," Smith said. "Any club at the moment who was looking for a half would look at Benji.

"I'd welcome the idea of Benji coming back as he is a wonderful footballer and a great asset to rugby league because a lot of young kids, boys and girls, mums and dads – they love Benji and turn up to matches to watch him play."

What an utterly hopeless Rugby Union player Benji proved. Had no feel or instinct for the game whatsover. He looked lost most of the time and put his supporting players under enormous pressure, almost always panicking and passing to players in worse positions than himself. His cross field tracking habit was bad enough in his last season with the Tigers - in Union it looked completely embarrassing.

League players who make the switch to Union are generally only successful on the wing or at fullback . Playing in the centres in Union is totally different than in League because no 5 metre rule means a very congested mid-field. Unless you are good off both feet or have an explosive burst of speed it's hard to break the line. Benji should have spoken to Timana Tahu how hard it is to play in the centers in Union. Matt Rogers is the only player I can think of who managed the transition successfully.

Union will be glad to see the back of him - and can't imagine him finding a decent gig back in the NRL.

League backrower excelled at centre in union. Can't be that hard.
Anyway when do union players break the line?
All I ever see them do is kick ffs.

I don't think there is a club in Sydney for Benji. I think his only chance of a return to the NRL would be with the Warriors. Perhaps the Raiders could be an option but he is not going to live in Canberra given his wifes situation.

Brilliant. Get some financial compensation whilst weakening an opposing team that signs Benji.

I hope he's back sooner rather than later. Love Bunj.

If he ends up at Melbourne, Bellamy will have him singing. A Benji without Sheens and with the Storm's toys frightens the hell out of me.

The sides form sans Benchy hurts his value a lot

Yeah it would you assume, plus his own league form in 12-13 and the way he attempted to hold Wests to ransom. He will probably get only around half of what he deemed was unacceptable from Wests.

I doubt he will be the guy who will go to Melbourne on a severely reduced wage and nothing more than a role player just to have one final shot at winning a premiership. If he was that personality he would still be at Wests today.

brad thorn was back in nrl 1 year later. sonny bill struggled a while in union . karmicheal hunt :p

For me, I think Benji Marshall was a great footballer in his day. He lost his pace and he lost his mojo. There might be a bit in it, about him not putting in for the new coach.

To me, he comes across also, as a really good bloke. I think the nobodies and neverweres on here, bagging off Benji should really think about what they achieved v him.

I didn't watch any of his rugby games as I don't watch much rugby.

What I did see this week is the NZ TVone sports presenter Andrew Dewhurst virtually barring up over the fact Benji wasn't good enough to play rugby. Frano Botica was interviewed on TV One this morning saying Union was far too complicated for these league players to play the game.

Benji played less than 5 games of union in his adult life and was playing at the top level (below test matches). Would any union convert ever be considered a success or failure after 5 league games? I don't think you would risk a player at frist grade without at least a few games at a lower level. The whole situation is ridiculous, but the rugby heads over here are thinking it is Christmas time and just prooves how difficult their game is to play and arn't we superior. There is so little logic in this whole situation. I can't believe he has actually shot through so quickly. Its all a bit weird.
has not blended in with new team. team mates , coach , training . ?
The way the game is being played this season will suit Benji. Faster ruck and 7 tackle sets, I reckon he'd enjoy it.
agree bring benji back

my sides are full of lols

I'm afraid it is hard.
Centre in union is one of the most challenging positions to play.
A centre has to play both sides of the field so has to be equally adept at passing of both hands, defending of the left and right shoulder and each time they change sides of the field, they have a different winger on the outside. The 5 metre rule in Union is called the advantage line and the centre dictates when on attack how far they stand back and when defending, how far forward they stand.
They also have to communicate with the 1st five as structure plays can only be tried at set piece and as the play starts moving from ruck to ruck, if in possession, the centre can call different plays if they see an attacking advantage can be taken. In a nutshell, the All Blacks best centres have more than likely played the position since their secondary school days.

If I knew that much about Union, I'd kill myself.

I watched his last game on the weekend and it was just plain f**king awful. Not him, he was about the only spark his team had in attack. But FMD, what have they done to the game itself, it is a f**king abortion, a parody of what it used to be.

Benji has baggage. He's all about Benji and he is pretty much a white-ant these days. I wish he had been as good at football as he was at white-anting in his last 2 seasons at the Tigers. He is a petulant child who is managed by an arrogant idiot. Those two things will have cost him over a million bucks by the time he retires.

Centre in union is a bludge. The only people doing work in union are the forwards & fullback.

Boring game these days

Benji will go to the Sharks where he has quite a few ex Tigers team mates & will be comfortable there. Being based in Sydney will also allow his wife to continue her media career.
