Wayne has always been respected as a guy with the games interest at heart, so last night press conference came as a shock to people, but it follows a pattern.

He said during the semis that broncos style of football should be praised and rewarded, he then went on to criticize the storm for their style of play, yet the last 40 minutes by the broncos was the most negative football played all year. At his time at the dragons he was criticized with the style of play of his team and his response was 'I'm here to win, not be stylish'

He said we should put more pride into the Kangaroos jumper, he them helps coaches the new zealand national team

He criticizes coaches for not having long term plans and for not developing youngsters. He signed all the older dragons players to contracts as he knew he wouldn't be their for long, while dragons did win a premierships, the long-term effects of Bennetts recruitment/retention strategy are still being felt. At the Knights he signed a whole dads army for a quick tilt at the title

He criticizes the rules even though he is on the rules comitee. He changed he rules during the off season but didn't inform the other coaches of the rule changes until pre-season was almost over.

He grumbles at the press for negatively portraying the game, yet after arguebly the greatest GF ever he drops a whole lot of negativity on the place.

His beef with golden point was always supposedly about player welfare, yet he things the solution should another 80 minutes

He is one of the greatest coaches undoubtly, but this myth that he's a guardian of our game has got to stop. He is like phil gould, if you take everything they say at face value you'd think they have the games best interest at hate, but scratch beneath the surface and you'll find hidden agendas behind almost everything they say

Good post. Well spotted mate. Btw I think you meant to say "game's best interest at heart". ;)

I lost a lot of respect for him after some of the stuff he said, I think himself and the Broncs expected to win it by turning up in the second half.
His team made plenty of mistakes and didn't try to do anything but defend.
The loss is on the Broncos.

Bravo. An overrated hypocrite who believes his own hype. Snaps at anyone for daring to ask Lord Benny a question, cliched or not. How about saying Cowboys were the better side and deserved to win? nope, you will never get that from this bitter old fool who puts himself above everyone in the game.

Uncle Benny said:
The game went 100 years without golden point.
Yep, it did, it also went 70 years with leather balls, low wages, no State of Origin, spear tackles, shoulder charges, stiff arms.

The whole point of the breakaway from Kickby (Rugby Union) was being paid if you got injured playing.

No Alex foundation.

There was no salary caps, TV contracts, mass broadcast media, social media for 100 years either Uncle Benny.

Things change Wayne and mainly for the better.

Go watch Johno be the man, sadly your young bloke Ben farged up...he has time to make it up.

That has also happened for 100 years, someone wins, someone loses......your first time big stage and you handled it poorly.

Seems like a fair few posters in this thread have been waiting quite a long time for Bennett to lose a GF.

We also went 60 years with field goals worth 2 points and 70 years with tries being 3 points. Imagine if we didn't change them rules

Thinking more about this - another feather in Wayne's cap was leading the charge to sell the game out to Super League.

Going defensive in the second half against a team known for comebacks from way larger margins was going to end badly for the Broncos eventually. Kicking into touch and gifting constant possession to the Cowboys time and time again eventually JT/Morgan and the rest of the team would break the defense. A 4 point lead over the Cowboys is pretty much 0 points mentally for the Cowboys as they over-run larger deficits throughout the season.

The Broncos should of stay true to there style, the likes of Hunt/Milford should of ran the ball like they have in the past and do chip and chase, etc. Going away from there natural and organic style of play they helped them get to the GF cost them and it was Bennett's decison to do so. He must take responsibility for that.

You be back next year Broncos though, Bennett and the Bronco's culture in general won't let this slide and be back with a vengeance.

Was a really strange strategy - enjoyable game, but not sure why so many are arguing it's the greatest of all time - given only one team played football in much of the second half...

Cowboys execution was relatively poor, I think, and Brisbane's defence terrific - the Cowboys had plenty of chances and kept blowing them - and Brisbane kept kicking it out and letting them try again... just weird, if the Cowboys hadn't nabbed it, they'd have regretted that performance forever

The Broncos have so much attacking flair, yet aside from Milford they offered relatively little late in the game - Hunt had a mare, and JT wasn't that much better (and handled well) despite being given the obligatory CC medal

Can only conclude Bennett's game plan was wrong

In his defence, he's always been against golden point, and rightly so

So if Johno kicks the 80 minute conversion the world is a good place. Not a try a kick.

But do it extra time and it is evil.

I do prefer golden try, but then I want conversions and any points for kicks removed.

Is a dummy half try for 2 m better than a sweeping backline to the corner?

It is rewarded better, is that right?

1 inch left and everybody be happy.

Bennett showed his true colours in the press conference. He could have shown some humility and grace but instead his lack of class shone through. Wind back to the round 6 press conference when the Bronco's beat the Roosters in golden point. How many times did Bennett mention he didn't like golden point? It was a big fat zero. Bennett has always been about Bennett. A shit stain of a human being.

He's disappointed but at the end of the day his team had the chance to win it. i wouldn't call it butthurt, he is speaking for the players who have to deal with that kind of loss but it's his players and his game plan that lost them that game.

Field goals can be arsey there's no doubt about that. But anybody watching Hodkinson win all those games for his team has to appreciate a good field goal artist.

I never said it's evil - I'm just clearly of the view that it's not needed in regular season play, and in knock-outs I'd prefer an extra time system, so whoever doesn't score first has the right of response - even receiving the kick-off is a big advantage, provided you catch it, of course

if they are so arsey why has Thurston won like 6 games this year from field goals?

he even kicked two in the round 4 clash.

they aren't arsey at all, they take skill. and Bennett is just whinging. lol @ replaying the game next week...
