Off topic but Wayne really reminds me of clint Eastwood, especially in the gran Torino film. Hard nosed and old school who takes no prisoners. Classic film
It would be ideal if he waits, for all parties.. But.. He will likely want a big hand in player recruitment, and that will get difficult the longer it plays out, more player managers and players are involved. I'd expect maybe a month to weigh up his decision, talk to players, check contracts etc.

We had no interest in Benji remember?

Paul mcgregor
st george illawarra director sean o’connor has backed paul mcgregor to be the dragons long-term coach, saying the joint venture’s foundation captain has the potential to lead the club into a new era.
While the dragons interest in 2010 premiership winning coach wayne bennett remains, a formal offer is yet to be made and brisbane and the gold coast, who announced a ‘‘full review’’ of club operations on tuesday, are also in the hunt for his services.
O’connor was loathe to criticise bennett but said mcgregor, at 46 and a steelers and dragons great, is the best long-term fit for the role.
‘‘i’d really support paul mcgregor to coach of the st george illawarra dragons and to lead us into a new and exciting era,’’ o’connor said.
‘‘mary’s been coaching for a number of years now, he’s been involved as a coach and a trainer of the dragons, so he’s an experienced coach who’s had a lot of success wherever he’s been.
‘‘we all know what he did as a player, he’s ticked all the boxes. He was our inaugural captain, he led us to the ‘99 grand final and he’s also played for nsw and australia.
‘‘he’s got enormous support in the illawarra region, he’s got the support of the current playing group and the respect of the current playing group.’’
the dragons were favourites to secure bennett’s signature after he announced he would quit the knights at season’s end, but the titans are now poised to make a lucrative offer to the seven-time premiership winner.
In quitting newcastle, 64-year-old bennett said he could not commit to the ‘‘four to five’’ year job of rebuilding the knights, indicating a preference for a shorter-term deal with an asking price in the vicinity of a million dollars a season.
The dragons board - who earlier this year sought $2 million in assistance from the nrl - is yet to formalise an offer to bennett and o’connor, one of four illawarra directors on the eight-man st george-illawarra board, urged the club to look beyond the next three years and appoint mcgregor to lead the club long into the future.
‘‘i think it’s important to look to the future and i think it’s important we do have a coach who can be long-term,’’ o’connor said.
‘‘i think for the stability of the dragons and the consistency of the dragons we need a coach who can commit long-term to and nurture that production line of juniors.
‘‘as mary has said, he’s not a career coach as such, he’s got a passion for the club here, the st george illawarra dragons.
‘‘we have a large talent pool of juniors and to maximise that talent pool and to have nrl players coming through you need a long-term coach.
‘‘i can easily see, having been involved with him at the [illawarra] cutters, that he could easily be the next supercoach.’’

Paul McGregor

With clowns like this on the board, no wonder we saw Price get the extension and the Club drop to the bottom group in the NRL. It's obvious that the Club should do all it can to sign Bennett for the next 3 years.
Mary is a rookie and no matter how good a player he's has been, Mary still needs to prove his coaching credentials over a longer period. With Bennett, we already know our Club finances will improve and our team will be very competitive again.
If the Club holds Mary in such high esteem, the obvious move should be to appoint Bennett as head coach with Mary as assist. Let Mary understand he will be offered the head coach position in 3 years time.
I think he is going to the titans. They tick all the boxes for Bennett.
- close to home
-chance to win first historic comp
- potential in the roster
- did I mention close to home? Seriously, at his age, he would want to return home, unless there is something we don't know about his home situation?
I'd love to have him back, but guys, seriously, Wayne Bennett will do whats best for Wayne bennett, don't be disappointed if we don't sign him.
