Whilst I am disappointed, I'm not surprised. It seemed a little strange to me he was linked to us in the first place. Worth a try, but if he wants to go home, then he wants to go home.

My fear now is that because the coaching saga has been played out so publically that the team will fall in a heap...its hard for players not to become involved in the hype...and that we will be left with choosing a second tier coach from those remaining for another 2-3 seasons

Why would they fall in a heap!!! They are behind Mary and have bought into what he is selling as a coach and the performances since taking over prove that. We are going to win every game under him but he sure as given our forwards some confidence and these are the same forwards that had a soft under belly at the beginning of the season!!!

I say if he gets us in to the 8 we should give him a go for 2015!

We had next to zero chance of signing Bennett. He just used us to up his price with the broncos or some other qld side.
I don't think we can wait around for another 12 months of "see how he goes" coaching regarding mcgregor. It creates too much uncertainty. We either need to sign up Henry or sheens for 3 years or just give mcgregor a 3 year contract. That way everybody is on the same page and we can get on with business. We have wasted so much time over the last 3 years speculating about coaches, let's just get on with it!

But Mary has now firmed to be appointed.Surely if so he won't be given more than a 1 yr contract enough of the rookie coaches.

BRONCOS players have been called in to club headquarters on their day off for an 11am meeting where they will be told Wayne Bennett will be their coach next year. It is expected Anthony Griffin will not see out the season after he was told this morning the final year of his contract will not be honoured.

What I find interesting now is what to do with Mary if not appointed coach.

You could see Mary as assistant to Bennett learning the ropes from the best in the business, but assistant to anyone else I am not so sure. I would prefer Henry get the gig now for 3 years but a slow start in 2015 would see the knives out very quickly with Mary in the wings.

Probably the only coach you could appoint now with Mary as assistant is Daley

I hope people ask him tough questions about the timing - adds to the theory about him being a mercenary who leaves clubs in bad shape for the future & just walks away. Also helps explain the Knights performance yesterday.

I would bet my house on him going back to Brisbane. I also think the deal has probably already been done behind closed doors.

If you look at Brisbane's line up, they have a crop of fantastic young players, and by their own standards have under performed for the last 8 years. Even this year, Griffin has them playing well one week, and horrible the next. I don't think the Bronco's are satisfied with the inconsistencies, so not sure why some are suggesting they aren't interested in Bennett.
My guess is coaching guys like Milford, Barba, Hunt, McCulloch, McGuire, and co. would be a pretty fair carrot to dangle in front of Wayne, not to mention they have the money, and it's his spiritual home (as much as we like to think he is a Dragon).

The lure of returning to his favourite club with an established roster, prospective success on the horizon, and the opportunity to return the club to the winners circle will be too good to refuse IMO.
