Best thing you've ever said...how would 2 non geographically specific Brisbane teams promote any kind of rivalry or tribalism. From the way bne2 are wording their press statements it sounds like they are much more interested in tapping the potential of having more footy in Brisbane than bringing in new fans to actually support a new club
This. I have no idea where their fans are going to come from. New clubs get fans by being the new local side. Pre Cowboys - the support up there would have been for a multitude of clubs - but once the got their local side, they got their side to follow.

This already happened in Brisbane in 1988.

The link is spastic too. Brisbane - where a famous aviator lived in the only period of his life that had nothing to do with planes - and some planes can be bombers. So we'll have a picture of a bloke who lived everywhere as an adult except for Brisbane, who never flew bombers.

With that logic, the Roosters may as well have a duck.

Kinda Ironic though. Mascot who had nothing to do with Bombers or Brisbane, when Inglis plays for Queensland.........

Why didnt they just call it the South Queensland Crushers????????????

The Giants and Jets of NY seem to have no difficutlies. Around 900k people tune in to watch RL from Brisbane, only 30-40,000 of them go to Broncos games. Surely there is some latent support for a 2nd team there? They said the same thing about the Dockers yet they now get crowds in excess of 30K whilst the Eagles crowds remain sold out for many years ahead.

Do agree though that a SQ name would have been better but maybe from a commercial point of view it will be easier to attract Brisbane business's to a Brisbane named team?

Names grow on you. Cowboys has grown on me - everyone associates them with NQ.

What I cannot understand is why no one in Queensland can think of something Australian?

You mean like the St George Dragons ........or the Newcastle Knights

or the Penrith Panthers

or the North Sydney Bears...........

I can't understand how you manage to log in every day and not bust a vein in the ball sack hanging from your forehead

I have no doubt that there are plenty of non-Broncos rugby league supporters in Brisbane. The Super League War did not go down well with many of them and there is plenty of hatred for the Broncos in Brisbane. However, I agree they should make an effort to apply some sort of geographical rivalry like what GWS, Port Adelaide or Fremantle have done. The Super League hatred will die off in years to come and kids will grow up with nothing specific drawing them towards either club, there will be plenty of fence jumpers rather than diehard Broncos or Bombers supporters.

Craig Davison and his invisible market research team did.

Another bunch of yuppies invading the peoples game. Let me guess, The jerseys will be called shirts and those "shirts" will have AFL style number fonts on the back. The field will be known as a pitch even though no cricket is played there.

sorry didn't want to create another Bombers discussion thread, we already have one. More interested on ideas for the remaining 3 bids.

I don't mind taking the Rams moniker for another New Zealand club.

Someone also suggested to me that if NZ did introduce new teams, perhaps the Warriors could be called Aotearoa Warriors. It might be a mouthful but it suits the Warriors image.

Crushers was a good name...
Crushers was a fantastic name for a team from Queensland. As are Cutters and Taipans (and Cyclones for that matter). All are locally relevant, intone a suitable amount of agression, and have the marketing advantage of being pretty much unique in top level professional sport. Not just in Australia but worldwide. I really don't understand why we pay big bucks to these marketing firms to basically go and rip off a complete branding strategy from an NFL franchise or some other sport. Is it too much to ask that they actually earn their money by coming up with something original that can potentially be taken to a world stage.

I'd say the Rugby League support base there is about 1.5 million at least. Remember not everyone can watch television every week.

It's definitely not been used to its full potential.

Minor in what way? Minor in the fact it is the second most played team sport in the world behind soccer? Minor in the fact that there are 73 competitive nations in the International Hockey Federation? Minor in that the Kookaburras are statistically one of Australia's most successful national sports teams, currently being ranked #1?

I think he means a minor sport in Australia.

The 49'ers moniker actually comes from the Californian gold rush. It's pretty specific to the region.

I like that name, only 20 off fun

Ok, we've now got the Bears, Reds and Bombers. Will CQ, Western Corridor and PNG add more meat onto the bones of their bids by announcing future club names and colours?

Reckon PNG do better at taking the meat off the bones.

PNG Cannibals!

Also like CQ Browns (snakes). Despite it being an awful colour for supporter gear etc, it would be a unique colour in the NRL.

How about PNG Swans, its funny how the AFL react lol. It worth adding a new teams each week with an 'AFL name' on it.

Fair enough about the other names you mention, but I have to pull you up on including St. George Dragons to that list. The fabled story of St. George staying the Dragon is obvious so the name actually has a meaning and connection to St. George.
