Names grow on you. Cowboys has grown on me - everyone associates them with NQ.

What I cannot understand is why no one in Queensland can think of something Australian?

Brisbane 'Burras was my choice ( if they really needed to go down the aliteration path.)

Yes the hockey team is called that but that sport is pretty minor though, I think it would have worked well and been somewhat unique and very Aussie.

True. In 1988, Brumbies would have been ok too. Australian version of the Yank rubbish they currently had.

Crushers was a good name, although I still recall a workmate of the time musing "What sort of animal is a Crusher"?

My only concern is that will they stick with the Brisbane name? Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Bombers, surely they can be more specific with their actual location (aka South Sydney, North Sydney etc)

Best thing you've ever said...how would 2 non geographically specific Brisbane teams promote any kind of rivalry or tribalism. From the way bne2 are wording their press statements it sounds like they are much more interested in tapping the potential of having more footy in Brisbane than bringing in new fans to actually support a new club

Minor in what way? Minor in the fact it is the second most played team sport in the world behind soccer? Minor in the fact that there are 73 competitive nations in the International Hockey Federation? Minor in that the Kookaburras are statistically one of Australia's most successful national sports teams, currently being ranked #1?

I don't think they should worry about sharing a name with teams in other sports but I don't think going with AFL team names is the best idea (despite there being tigers, magpies, bears [though both are now extinct], eagles and bulldogs already).

It's creating a lot of publicity though...the name sucks but at least it's garnering interest.
They'd at least need to change 'Brisbane' to something else though.
I like Cowboys Beave, we live on the coast yeah but Marlins...I don't know I'd rather Cowboys than a fish.
People up north are country folk, even living by the coast, the values are still the same.

sorry didn't want to create another Bombers discussion thread, we already have one. More interested on ideas for the remaining 3 bids.

You mean like the Sydney Roosters?

Easts had 100 years of history behind them before they changed to a generic name, which yes I still don't agree with, but everybody knows their heritage and positioning.

Bombers is rubbish, Rivercity Kookas or Brisbane Brewers were my favourites. At least the Brewers would be entrenched in QLD identity.

Was there any link with the Cowboys name of North Queensland being like the wild west/frontier?

Ipswich-Logan Jets
Wellington Axemen/Orcas
Central Queensland Bulls
Port Moresby Turtles? This is probably the hardest one, but also least likely.

I understand that. My point was the irony of someone who supports the Sydney Roosters claiming that Brisbane Bombers was not specific enough.

Who cares? When Canterbury became the Bulldogs we didnt have both codes cross pollinating districts.

Bombers has nothing to do with Brisbane, so clearly it's a Essendon rip off.

Sorry, but the Names for the Brisbane bid suck. And the Titans is not flash also - however at least Searle found something unique.

That was the name chosen by the fans. Who chose the Bombers name?
