mate IMO their old records sound like they were recorded in a tin can.

As I said the playing on DM is way more superior ....plus heavier

DM is not heavier than their earlier albums - it just isn't. It's heavier than the black album and everything since.

As for the playing being superior - it may sound that way to you but as a guitarist (and pretty sh*t one at that) I will have to disagree. Justice would be their most technical album by far.

RHCP lost most of their funk around Califonication time. Their sound for the most part is now boring radio friendly ballads, nothing like the awesome stuff off Freaky Styley or Mother''s milk.

I'm inclined to think they sold out or just got old.

I'd like to think it was the getting old part. I still don't mind them to this day, but some songs do drag on a bit horribly.

How can anyone seriously claim that the playing on Death Magnetic is anywhere near that of Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ... And Justice For All...

Listen to Harvestor Of Sorrow, ...And Justice For All, Fight Fire With Fire, etc. and all of them have much more complex song structures that use much more technique. What is most telling is the difference in the drums. Death Magnetic drums are plain and boring, with every fill being a bloody snare roll.

I tend to agree. The 'guitar solos' bored the crap out of me. Every single one of them even inferior to the Eddie Van Halen riff on 'Beat It'.

I still can't stand that album. No structure to some of the songs at all.

Definitely.

I just get a bit upset when I listen to Whoracle or The Jester Race and then compare it to the last few crap albums.

That said, I didn't hate the most recent one - plus I got to interview the band :)

agree....the use of the word sellout is stupid to begin with

basically after reading this thread, any band that changes their sound is a sellout. f**k, thats genius. geez i wish metallica put out 50 albums all with the same sound. that would be like, so non-sellout brothers

Nobody is saying a band can't evolve or change their sound Moffo. Plenty of bands have done so with great success.

It's when there is an obvious shift towards a more commercial sound that the problem arises.

In Metallica's case they just became crap for a few years there. I'll never respect any band that 'dumbs down' their music.

I disagree.. Asides from the sound on St Anger i have enjoyed what the band has put out.. I actually listened to most of them starting at Kill em all on the weekend and enjoyed the changes through out the albums..

Not every ones cup of tea so to speak but they have rarely disappointed me and i am a relatively long time fan..

It's just all general opinion of whether people think a band has 'sold out' against musical taste I suppose.

Well everything comes down to personal taste Mong. All I'm saying is that Metallica didn't use all of their talents for a while there.

The good news is that DM is a massive improvement.

RATM

Anti-corporate blah blah bullsh*t yet they're signed to (I think?) Sony.
"Do you have the copy of the radio edit of Rage Against the Machines song 'Killing in the Name Of,' where they take out the part that says "f**k you i wont do what you tell me," because the record company told them to.

 I did not know that. Oh the irony! But not surprising- the music industry is full of such grand-standing.
