Only a "cooked" simpleton would suggest that RL ratings in Melbourne have "exploded".

Metro Audiences

  • Sydney average 161,000
  • Melbourne average 12,000
  • Brisbane average 111,000
  • Adelaide average 7,000
  • Perth average 8,000

In Melbourne the Storm average 33,000, and when the Storm arent playing the NRL averages 8,000.

In Brisbane, the Broncos average 170,000, the Dolphins average 126,000. Other Queensland regional teams average 131,000 on Nine, while matches involving no Queensland sides average 98,000.

In NSW, Sydney sides average 163,000 per game, while sides from regional NSW average 163,000 as well. Matches with no teams from NSW average 146,000.

The leading clubs on television during the season werre Brisbane, Sth Sydney, Penrith and Melbourne.

Brisbane were the dominant club on Nine averaging 620,000 viewers per game.

  • Penrith 586,000
  • Parramatta 569,000
  • Sth Sydney 549,000
  • Dolphins 521,000
  • Melbourne 518,000
  • Sydney 510,000

Brisbane were also dominant on Foxtels set top box programming, averaging 288,000 per game

  • Sth Sydney 270,000
  • Melbourne 267,000
  • Nth Queensland 259,000
  • Penrith 257,000

The Broncos ratings dominance continued despite a significant drop in free to air coverage – this is AFTER they dropped 4 games on FTA – Broncos matches on Nine dropped from 17 down to 13 this season. No Sunday FTA (2 last year, 0 this year), and 2 less Thursdays (down to 4). Fri (8) and Sat N (1) FTA remained the same.

So you are suggesting support (members and TV audience) and viability aren’t important metrics?

Mate I don’t like the Storm on the field (although my dislike for them has lessened a little since Cameron Smith retired) but to suggest they aren’t valuable to the league is a bit silly.
Those are important metrics for the storm

crowds are important for the game as a whole

I don’t mind the storm on the field they’ve been good for 30 years

this is about what they bring for rugby league

we’ve ignored more important markets

Storm have helped origin ratings

but then again that could just be because we take origins there

just like Perth ratings for origin have grown since they got origins

This sounds like an argument that a team in Perth would grow the ratings and therefore the game.

need to see the PTV and streaming data that you conveniently ignore every single time you post this
How can I "conveniently ignore" data thst doesn't exist?

If you have data on how many people from Melbourne watch the Storm via PTV then provide it.

I got my data from Wookie's site. He doesn't have a metro breakdown of PTV ratings. If he doesn't have it then no one does.

Apparently since they don't give a breakdown, people watching on PTV and streaming are of no value.
Logical fallacy.

Unless you can provide evidence that there's a significant amount of viewers from Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth watching via PTV then all you're doing is speculating and deflecting attention away from the fact that FTA ratings for these regions are poor.

Why ask for the metro break down for the PTV ratings when you know there is no data?

It's just a "look over there" distraction technique to divert attention away from the fact the Storm offer little value to Ch9 in Melbourne.

You can't claim that they only rate well because of their QLD support, based on zero data, then make this denial at the same time

All we can use is the Data we have, and that shows that the Storm are the 3rd highest rating team in the comp.

Wow so the ratings are 4 times higher with the team than without.

You and wb1234 are 2 of the best advocates for a team in Perth.
Storm were broadcast on Ch9 for a grand total of 12 games during the regular season. Ch9 aired 73 NRL games across the country between Rd 1 and 27. That means 61 of the games broadcast into Melbourne did not feature the Storm. If they become also-rans then their allocation of FTA games will more likely than not drop because fewer neutrals will be interested in watching them play.

you know there is a PTV/streaming component though... Storm rate well nationally on those platforms so we can't assume that Victoria isn't contributing to those ratings, we don't know. Anyway, there are other metrics the Storm are ahead of most clubs in that you conveniently ignore or dismiss cause it doesn't suit your agenda.

So what we’ve all agreed is the tv company that pays the game the most money has melbourne club as third biggest audience driving their subscriptions. Happy days, just need Perth to do same.

No one knows how many people in Melbourne are watching the Storm on PTV.

Storm rate well nationally on those platforms so we can't assume that Victoria isn't contributing to those ratings, we don't know.

The odds of Victorians constituting more than a negligible amount of the national PTV audience is slim. It's ludicrous to assume the number is more than a few thousand. The general rule is FTA provides a larger share per game than PTV. The average for PTV is 240k. For FTA it is 580k. You and your mates are clutching at straws and not using any common sense.

Anyway, there are other metrics the Storm are ahead of most clubs in that you conveniently ignore or dismiss cause it doesn't suit your agenda.

You and your mates claim we need teams in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth to increase the value of the broadcast rights. How many members each club has and how many people attend their matches is irrelevant to the value they add to the broadcast rights.

So why bring up attendances and membership base to argue that Storm add value to the broadcast rights?

It's stupid to use attendances and membership tally for the Storm to argue that Ch9 and Foxtel want teams in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth.

You're clutching at straws and using the "look over there" tactic to divert attention away from the evidence.

Keep on trolling.

You know that most of the Storm's viewers are from Queensland and and NSW. You also know that they've had a golden run since they entered the NRL in 1998. People like to watch successful teams.

Neutrals tune out when a team becomes a cellar-dweller.

The odds of a Perth-based team replicating the Storm is so low it's delusional to think it is guaranteed to happen.

You have no evidence to back this up, it's pure speculation, of which you get sooky about for other topics.

What about Origin or the, Finals and the GF on TV, what city outside Sydney and Brisbane has the highest ratings on TV for those games?

Also, the vast majority of FTA storm games are on secondary channels, when the Storm have had games on the main channel they have clearly rated higher.

Perth doesn't need to replicate the Storm.

The Storm are the most successful true expansion club in RL history, and you can't acknowledge that

You state that they offer no value to fox and use ch9 data to support it.

You state that they haven't grown ratings despite not having half the data.

You are the one making the claims without the data. We are just pointing out that you don’t have the data.

You seem to think you should be able to make claims where you know there is no data, and then tell everyone else that if they disagree, prove you wrong. That's not how it works.

huh? you were the one that turned this into a "channel 9 ratings are the only metric that's important" discussion, not anyone else.
