THE NRL expansion battle has descended into a war of words after the new Brisbane consortium yesterday came under attack from master coach Wayne Bennett and rival bid teams Ipswich and Central Queensland. Just days after identifying Bennett as a possible coaching target, the Dragons mentor yesterday voiced his opposition to a second NRL team in Brisbane to rival the Broncos, the club over which he presided for 21 seasons.
Bennett's stance came after Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale, a strident supporter of a western corridor NRL bid, blasted the timing of the Brisbane consortium's announcement as "offensive" as his region recovers from the devastating Queensland floods.
CQ bid chief executive Denis Keeffe also fanned the expansionary embers, warning a top-level Queensland sporting club would suffer badly if a third NRL team was added to southeast Queensland in 2013.
But the besieged consortium hit back yesterday amid growing concerns a second Brisbane NRL team would erode the success of the Broncos and Titans.

"I disagree with that," Brisbane consortium member Craig Davison said. "A second team in Brisbane is viable and we have a very, very good chance of making this work. We need 24 games out of Suncorp each year, not 12.
"Rugby league is about a lot of passionate people and it is great to see the passion that Paul Pisasale has for his NRL expansion bid in Ipswich.
"I respect the Ipswich bid but we're working hard on our bid and we make no apologies."
Bennett is one of three coaches, with Craig Bellamy and Mal Meninga, on the Brisbane bid's hit list, but the 61-year-old yesterday distanced himself from the prospective franchise.
"No, it wouldn't be my choice," said Bennett, speaking at an NRL All Stars promotion yesterday.
When pressed on what location he would recommend the NRL pursue, Bennett added: "I've got lots of preferences, but no one is going to take a lot of notice of that, so we won't talk about it today."
CQ boss Keeffe fears the creation of a second Brisbane NRL team could prove disastrous for southeast Queensland, which already features seven major sporting outfits.
"I think someone is going to get hurt badly if a third NRL team comes into that region," Keeffe said.
"The sporting landscape in southeast Queensland is fairly crowded now.
"You have two NRL clubs, two AFL clubs, two A-league clubs, a Super 15 club and then you have a plethora of Queensland Cup clubs all competing for the hearts and minds of the corporate dollar."
