Haha WA is a lot worse than Wellington and Christchurch in terms of areas/cities around it. In WA you have Perth and nothing really substantial in terms of population around it.
To be fair Christchurch really doesn’t have much once you get past the immediately surrounding satellite towns.
Wellington has a decent regional population within 2-3 hours drive.
You’re right re WA though, it’s effective empty beyond Perth and surrounds

Yeah Christchurch doesn’t have a lot but it still has a bit more than Perth though in terms of surrounds.

Doesn't Perth have over 1.5m people? The nearest sizeble population to Chch is Dunedin. There's less people in the South Island than in Perth itself.

As @SpaceMonkey notes Wellington has a much bigger population within a 3 hour radius than Chch has.

Perth’s population is around 2.1 million I think. It’s similar in population to Auckland.

Christchurch is basically half a million people within an hour or so of the stadium then no significant population within 3-4 hours drive.
Dunedin, Nelson, Queenstown, Invercargill are all half a day or more away.
Wellington has Napier/Hastings, Palmerston North and Wanganui regions all within a closer radius than that

Yeah, I think the old population breakdown they used to do for Super Rugby had the Canes population at 1.1m so would be similar but takeaway the East Coast and the Naki.

Yeah east coast and Naki are kinda the odd areas that don’t really fall properly into either Auckland or Wellington catchments being too far from either. But all up they account for less than 200k population so you’ve still got 900k plus in Wellington’s greater catchment area.
Christchurch would probably be under 600k.
Whereas Auckland would have 2.7-2.8 million people within the equivalent area.

Christchurch is the best place to put the NZ2 team in. That stadium will be the jewel in the crown of all NZ FFS!

It will be a massive presence and character all of its own.

It will bring in the punters like no other sporting facility in their country. It will become a go to tourist attraction too that can't be affected come rain hail or shine no matter what time of day/night or season. Which in the bleak dark cold and wintery nights in NZ is sensational and a $$$ spinner.

It is state of the art and the roof has/will make it a game changer. Dunedin is a very poor mans indoor stadium that doesn't capture anyone's imagination. This stadium does and will. The NRL would be mad to ignore such an opportunity and give free shots to other sports that will use it.

We need to go in there quick smart and and capture a big bulk of the new and old fans that will be drawn to it like moths to a flame in the heart of the city. To allow Rugby to make it their stadium would be folly. We need our presence added to the spoils that will be on offer and there will be plenty. The buzz of a stadium like this in NZ will be huge.

Lets hope we don't fu*k this up and come way to late to the party and then have to play catch up way more then we could have if we came on time from the start.

You sound like you work for the marketing company of the not yet finished stadium. :)

Wellington/Wairarapa/Manawatu/HB population is a shade under 1mil
The next band is a bit far but could potentially be in the catchment area Taranaki/East coast 181k
Closer travel time to Wellington than CHCH but involves ferry/flight Tasman/Nelson/Marlborough 165k would bring a combined total to 1.35m

Yeah all accurate. I don’t think you can rely on those further afield areas to generate much in the way of ground attendance though. Moreso TV numbers and merch sales. East Coast (as in Gisborne) is also arguably more aligned to Auckland than Welly.

I wish.

No, it's just to me a no brainer and a great lure for fans, players, coaches/professional execs and sponsors and would be very easy to market the sh*t out of it. It will put Christchurch on the map in the Southern hemisphere. Put it this way who ever really hears anything about Christchurch from an Australian point of view outside of a news disaster or some extraordinary event?

This will change things completely and there will be constant news feeds coming out of the place and if we are smart enough the NRL should try to position itself to become the loudest voice coming out of that place.

Who gives a stuff. It should be Christchurch or don't bother for now and go with Perth after PNG of course which will be number 18 considering all the Government money that it is going to bring in.

I mean that sort of thing wears off pretty quickly.

I certainly dont think the quality of a stadium will make much difference to TV viewers in Australia.

I’ve practically never considered the stadium when choosing whether to watch a game on TV. Maybe for novelty factor when it’s a new venue but that lasts a couple of games tops.
It might influence players a little but team culture, training facilities and general quality of life considerations are the main drivers.
