THE Cowboys are keen for "the stars to align" as they attempt to add depth to their hooker stocks for 2014.
St George Illawarra young gun Cameron King is in North Queensland's sights, with the Dragons reportedly prepared to release him from the final season of his National Rugby League contract with the Sydney club.
Cowboys football manager Peter Parr confirmed interest in the 22-year-old dummyhalf yesterday.
"We're still looking for a hooker and Cameron King is a guy that we've discussed, but nothing's materialised just yet," he said.
"In our opinion, he's a quality player. If the stars can align we'd certainly be interested
in talking to him."
King, who debuted in the NRL with the Dragons in 2010, has played 17 games in first-grade, including 11 this season.
North Queensland struggled to adapt to life after Aaron Payne (retired) and James Segeyaro (Penrith) in the first half of 2013, but found their feet through Ray Thompson and Rory Kostjasyn as the club charged into the finals.
Meanwhile, Saturday's heartbreaking elimination final loss isn't the end of the season for all Cowboys that played in that game.
Jason Taumalolo (Mackay), Wayne Ulugia and Joel Riethmuller (both Northern Pride) are eligible to play in Sunday's Queensland Cup grand final qualifier between the teams to be played at Langlands Park.
Back rower Riethmuller, struggling with some niggling injuries, is the most unlikely to play, while Ulugia was dubbed a certainty.
The Cowboys also confirmed rising star Kyle Feldt also would not play.
Feldt made his return for the Pride on Sunday from an ankle injury sustained after a series of strong performances for the Cowboys in August, but broke down again. The outside back will have surgery.
