A bit of mental arithmatic tells me that if there are 200 Islanders in the NRL and ESL on an average of 100k a year - that is $20 million a year.
I reckon that sort of money has a few kids in the islands interested - not that any of the supposed top level Union players from the PI countries could make it in League.

The growth in interest from kids of PI heritage is obvious for anyone whose eyes are not painted on. 10 years ago kids of PI heritage were a little bit exotic in the junior grades, but now you nearly get a surprize when you see an anglo kid playing.

I don't know if it's possible for kids learning to play in the Islands to ever compete with kids from Auckland and Sydney - it really is the difference between some of the best facilities for sports development in the world and some of the worst - but move kids to Sydney as 16 year olds to play Mathews and Ball and they could be as good as anyone.

It's funny how Union fans get uptight when someone mentions the truth about the state of Union in the southern hemisphere. I hope for the sake of the Super 14's that John O'Neill can pull a rabbit out of his hat.

In Australia rugby union was on a high after the 2003 Rugby World Cup. 5 Years later the ARU is losing Millions, crowds have dropped, Ratings have dropped and Union is now a distant 4th in the battle of the football codes.

I continue to read articles about the issues the ARU, NZRU and SARU are having and how boring the game has become. The 2011 RWC might just send the NZRU to the wall. Are all these articles false?

Best coaches in history? that opinion proves how little you know... much like SBW playing 5/8...

i didnt say best coaches in history.

i said a succesful coach.

he coached australia to beat nz in 2003 for example.

he things the ABs need him.

and the comment about 5/8th was an ironic one. id play him at centre

You obviously know nothing about the Pacific Islands . The Pacifc Island kids play rugby union because is their national sport and they will continue playing rugby union in New Zealand, Australia Europe or Japan which gives them and families security .

Cricket and soccer in NZ has been failing for a while . Does that mean all the cricket kids should pack up and head to India to play cricket ?

union has spent lots of time on the pacific islands.

now that people are seeing what the nrl is about, that dominance is quickly fading.

with the number of pacific island nations in the world cup, and a more regular test program including them, RL will easily become top dog.

you mention financial security. well if RL keeps growing, it will be the sport that provides that. union has lots of problems and in a competition with the NRL it is getting destroyed

spot on.

and against that you see an NRL which is growing every year and widely acknowledged as the premier rugby competiion in the southern hemisphere.

with more Polynesians in the NRL every year, the domiance of the code in the islands is assured.

they present a very talented source of players and are more suited to an open game like league than a stop start contest like union

Its very good dreaming and fantasize about that sort of things DallyMessenger . Unless you actually seen or been to the Islands and see it first hand you have know idea . More Polynesians in the NRL hasn't actually help New Zealand rugby league numbers has it ?
The Pacific Islanders has already got a professional/semi professional rugby union competition (Pacific Cup, Colonial Cup, Samoa NPC, Tongan NPC and Pacific Nations Cup ) locally running right now .
Tell me more than five Islanders playing in the NRL who played rugby league locally in the last five years ?

If league was the game for Polynesians . Why isn't all the Polynesians in the Pacific and New Zealand playing it ? Good try !
Wiki, Faalogo, Lauititi, Faumuina, Inu and co might be house hold names in Sydney and Northern England . In Samoa most people wouldn't even reconise them . Monty Betham had a boxing match in Samoa last year where the local media thought he's been boxing in NZ since he was 15 . Tony Tuimavave packed his bags and left Samoa saying that he's had enough because knowbody knows who he is and what league is .

look i understand as a union fan you might be feeling insecure.

the benchmark union competition is dieing. with nothing left for the elite athlets to play theyll all want to play NRL.

i doubt the S14 will survive in its current format, and any making the season twice as long are a bandaid solution.

the TV ratings are awful, money is shrinking. it is having to compete with a far better product and is failing.

keep watching the nrl and youll see the kinds of players im talking about.

10 years or so ago the All Blacks name was respected and revered. today its lost that aura and really players like sonny bill williams and benji marshall would be the guns players

You mean rugby union is the national sport of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji .:sarcasm: And with more professional rugby union clubs world wide there are alot oppotunity for rugby kids in the Pacific .

with the number of pacific island nations in the world cup, and a more regular test program including them, RL will easily become top dog.
blah blah . How many RLWC has Samoa, Tonga and Fiji played in ? And I still haven't seen rugby league taken over 5th place hockey in this Pacific Island countries .

RL growing ? oops thats right . I forgot Samoa, Tonga and Fiji are Australian states . Has RL grow in New Zealand ? When you answer that then think about the Pacific Islands and you might have an idea where league stands .

im saying that the warriors ceo ian robson and fourm members in the past have all had the same dream about league becoming nz's national sport .

Nope, never heard that one before.
i know it quite well . i think he was caught up in the hype and all that and didn't realise what rugby union and the all blacks meant to new zealand . another word, an aussie trying to comment about sports in nz in which he knew nothing about .

Would that be the same as NZers commenting on sports in Australia?

if you say so parra . but the nrl not having teams in perth and adelaide help made my decision alot easy . i can't think of any national local competitions in the world where you cross over to another country while ignore other states and local areas within your own country .
