After years of complaining about other clubs, particularly Sydney, getting leg ups Eddie Maguire is now the champion of 'football socialism'. What a hypocrite lol.

Besides, describing the AFL as socialist is at best a very wonky analogy anyway. Let's put it this way, no genuine socialist with an understanding of socialist philosophy or economics would ever recognise them as socialist.

BTW what are your qualifications to talk on this subject? Or are you just trying to appeal to authority because you can't form a solid argument of your own?

Don't over analyse It.

it's just a policy instigated by the AFL to help the weaker clubs and maintain the balance of the competition.
They are a well run comp so there must be merit in it.

If you want to know the context of Eddie's comments you'll find a podcast on SEN's website.

No they are not that dumb.
  • GWS has a 10k average attendance in Sydney over their existence, and most people whom aren't totally bias would agree those numbers are padded to some degree.
  • 30k members in 2019, but who knows what percentage of those are ticketed (or memberships of any substance), and who knows how many of those members are from Canberra (it's got to be close to half).
  • I can't be bothered looking it up, but I can't imagine that their average ratings are that great either.
I could go on but I think you get the point; in fact after looking at those numbers I'm willing to say that with the probable exception of sponsorship dollars, if Canberra had it's own team that they'd pull larger numbers than GWS currently does.

Maybe in 20-30 years time GWS will be pulling solid numbers and the AFL will look at a third Sydney team, but they'd be absolutely mad to add a third one anytime soon.

Canberra afl team would out do two most recent clubs today if it existed, but afl don't give a shit about that. Afl only cares about TV viewership.
Look how poorly NRL grand final rated with raiders - Canberra not even part of 5 captials.
Sydney market is 5 million & growing fast (corona notwithstanding). Any extra team here would increase chances of maximizing audience by having team in finals & playing important big games.

This.

One sport where top male & female stars can play together. Been saying this for years.

Afl will beat NRL to punch on this too & that sport doesn't even have a non contact version!!!

Yep, the clubs and players themselves are not good custodians of the game. They have a duty to be part of trying to grow the game but they totally refuse.
I'd love to see NRL become more centralised so that clubs themselves have a lot less influence.

Most people outside of nsw and qlnd still don’t see touch as playing a variant of RL. Touch and possibly nines could well be the future of grassroots rl as society shies away from full contact sports.

This is true and would send shivers down the spine of fans that cant be open minded about rule changes but if you can think outside the square about the rules society becoming more shy about full contact sport is not necessarily the big future disaster for NRL compared to AFL and soccer.
RL could easily (and 100% should) create positions on the field for players who dont have to tackle and also dont even have to get tackled. Those positions exist in American Football and there are no reasons why they cant exist in RL.
Kicker, punter, QB (for the most part). Brady hardly ever has body contact unless something goes wrong.

Dumbest rugby league post ever!
The whole reason league players are out there on the field is to do everything, in attack, kicking, tackling and defence, but you want them to interchange kickers and punters, go back to watching stopstart NFL

Rugby league is constantly evolving its gameplay and rules. If you were to look at a game from 1910 to one played yesterday it would look like two different games. There's no reason why the game cannot change dramatically over the next 20 or 30 years. It's already adopted rules and gameplay from American football.

Maybe one innovation could be to introduce safeties into RL so that there's more opportunities to score. Two points for tackling the ball carrier behind his goal line would make kicks, kick chases and kick returns more exciting and important.

The set restart is open to abuse, especially on the first play of the set where teams hold down in the tackle to organise their defence. I'd introduce a 2 minute sin bin for players when a team uses this play more than once during a set.

Make a try worth 6 points.

That is just your view of it. I don't agree.
I get no excitement out of watching a big forward running at a halfback. I would love it if halves were just there on the ability to attack, we would end up with a much more exciting game.
I also have no problem with goal kickers being specialists like in american football.

It can afford to lose you.

It cant afford to lose all the people who are like me, keen old league fans who now prefer american football because NRL has become garbage due to coaches.

Stupid comment. Dont talk on behalf of the code as if it can afford to lose fans and not worry about it.
.
I respect you mate, and you do have some real out of the box ideas that makes these forums much more interesting, but I think you a well off the mark on this one, both in terms of the idea and the desire out there to have our game change this way. The little fellas taking on the biggest of big makes them special, think of what our Premiership Trophy- Proven and Summons. Giant vs diminutive. That is rugby league. Tell Alfie Langer he needed to be protected- he is a legend because of his size.

This would fundamentally change the game in a way that it could not be called “Rugby League”. The fact that every player is out there doing the same thing, under the same pressures is exactly what makes our game a spectacular. I know it’s anecdotal, but I know everyone of my mates and people I talk to about league would agree. I’d love to see a vote on this, to see some actual data on it. I’d bet my house on keeping it as it is would win an overwhelming majority.

American football has too many stoppages, but there are elements from it that can be transferred to RL. The 6 tackle rule was influenced by the down system in American football and it's made the game a a better product.

Maybe we could learn from Canadian football and have 12 players instead of 13. Both codes play on a similar sized field. We don't need a lock forward.

I'd like to see specialist defenders at marker. I'd make these positions the only two that can be interchanged as they would be doing so much work. There would be four replacements for every other position.

Maybe second rowers can be turned into specialist defenders.

who asked you.
Its a forum, and speaking your mind is allowed, and what you said was pretty stufid, so accept that others see the game as its played by everyone equally, and as the game will evolve but what it won't do is have specific specialist subs that cannot get tackled, its what makes the speedy hooker dangerous, or the side stepping wingers look so good, and 6-again rule was not an american influenced idea btw, @GROTD, not sure we have stoppages years ago that would even relate to the 4 hour nitpicking NFL is.

If anything (and this will make people possibly cringe) it would be a fairer game if the NRLW and NRL were the same game, not two seperate games based on gender... but there are so many issues that would arise, from not getting picked by the coach to a woman running over the best player on the opposition team and the embarrassment, which all are silly but media worthy scoops that would make the league stand out apart from the other codes of the world.
Maybe create a minimum of 2 players on field must be of different gender, as such you'd have 4 women on any given team playing 1st grade, getting hit, tackling, attacking as the men do, it would change the fabric of the game somewhat, but realistically it shouldn't, as it could be the same as making sure you have an interchange bench with 2 props, a 2nd rower and utility for the backs....
Having said that ive seen some of the womens games and they can crunch you very easily, and looking at guys like luke keary, he is pretty scrawny, a can see kezie apps absolutely demolish him

Could there be an option for Manly to encompass the entire harbour to Gosford area, almost bring back the “Northern Sea Eagles” but in traditional Manly colours? Have the club sincerely engage the northern suburbs and Central Coast? Play a good wad of games at Gosford, a handful at Manly and one or two at NSO and base themselves at Brookvale? (Eg 5 games Gosford, 5 games Brookvale, 1 game NSO)??

Would the larger community (ie more of the North’s and CC) embrace this if it were done right? Also, would Manly supporters be more inclined to travel north than they are to go to Moore Park or Homebush? I’d love to hear from locals or someone that’s has been a part of these communities especially as I have no idea....

To me, this would be righting a wrong from 20 years ago, future proofing an existing club, expanding the game in logical, meaningful ways to no detriment of anyone existing and ensuring any additional teams go to areas that genuinely grow the game. I know Bears fans probably won’t be on board being rightfully jaded, but could it happen?
