Mac, I think it's a bit silly to think that today's crowd is a reason to not put a team on the Coast. For starters, the people who support the Knights because "they're the closest team" would probably switch allegiences. Furthermore, some other people who aren't as hardcore for the NRL team they follow would switch too, not to mention new fans to the game and Bears fans who have avoided the game like the plague in protest.

Before 1988 there were plenty of people in the Hunter Valley who followed St George, Canterbury, Parramatta, Balmain etc. and some of them still do (in whatever form their team takes) but at the same time the Knights have a large hardcore fan base. Keep in mind not just Coasties, but people from the North Shore who followed the Bears would make the trek to Gosford as well.

As I said, do you really think I'm a cross-section of the community?

The Mariners were done correctly and for the most part have been successful. While their crowds are still considered weak they've managed 3/4 finals appearances, 2 grand finals in four years, and have a loyal following. Given football was secondary to

As for "financial basketcases" I don't think this will be given the green light without an appropriate funding agreement and such... and as for your financial problems, I sincerely hope the private backing rumours come true, that may go a long way to solving the liquidity problems up Newie way.

Imagine the rivalry not only in football but in League that Newcastle v CC clashes could generate?

Quick question. Other than Orford, O'Meley etc. which Coastie juniors are playing first grade (anywhere)?

Not an answer to your question as such, but Girvie's list of North Sydney players that have gone on to NRL first grade [2000 to 2008] contains many CC juniors.

http://www.mightybears.com/viewtopic.php?t=2786

I've put together a list of players who have played for the Bears, and been developed by the Bears, and then gone on to make their debut in the National Rugby League or English Super League.

Notes:
* I don't have the full list of Bears players this decade, particularly junior reps, so there are possibly some other Bears juniors who have gone onto play in the NRL.
* Some of these players had been dual-contracted to the Bears with an NRL club, such as South Sydney or Melbourne.

I think alot will depend on Cronulla folding or not - as they are one of the more likely to do so. I think Newcastle will stick around, a private backer will come on board IMO.

Florimo made some good points on the Sunday Footy Show today.

I hadn't realised that the total player drain to England and other codes had been so great. 80+ players, I think they said- assuming money is the deciding factor in those players heading overseas, an expanded competition with, please God, a better media rights deal, you would be able to get some back and slow down the player drain, so tired horse of "talent dilution' could be put to rest.

To survive long-term, the NRL needs to expand. The difficult part is choosing when and where. Hopefully those in the drivers seat can make a wise choice on this one.

There are worse things they can do in three years than to (re-)admit Perth and the Bears. So long as the global economy is no longer in free-fall, we might get both in.

The question is really whether Gallop and the rest of the board are more concerned with the future than their immediate bottom-line... and toadying up to their various factions and own agendas.

Sadly, the biggest hurdle for the CC Bears is Gallop and the other News lackeys that have been deathriding the CC Bears for 10 years.

Any other sport would be laughing at rugby league because the CC Bears introduction is so easy, so obvious. AND by reneging on the original promise, the NRL's lack of integrity becomes worse. It just reaffirms that the only way you get ahead in rugby league is if you have few mates at head office, not because what you have is best for the game.

I think it definitely makes sense -Reds and Bears!
