Bears tick every box, every single box, to be a long term viable entity.
So says the bears fan.
Ipswich, Perth, Central Queensland, Wellington, PNG or any other bid does not have to have any ticks in any boxes until the NRL asks for submissions.

Just because other bids aren't revealing every detail of their bid does not mean their bid isn't advanced or that they don't have an advanced bid strategy

And just because the bears bid is letting it all hang out information wise doesn't mean that the other bids have to. Why? Because possible expansion is just that, possible, not absolute. Why play your hand now when its not required.

Oh please that's just dumb logic. The Bears are letting it "all hang out" because they have something to hang out. The other bids, other than Perth, have sh*t all. That's why they're not "revealing every detail". Anti Sydney and anti NSW people should just accept the Bears are coming back.

I want to see the CC get the Bears in. But is seems the momentum is shifting. I think Ipswich is timing it perfectly and the Reds pretty much a shoe in if the NRL is serious, I hate to say it but the Bears could have to wait till a Sydney team needs to move.

Titans cause for concern? 4th best supported club in the comp and probably has the highest membership prices. How do you feel about stmerge crowds given they were minor premiers in 2009? Titans beat them. Cowboys had a shocking year. Can't blame their fans. What's bad is Sydney's "number 1 team" (minor premiers BTW) came 7th overall behind the other 2 QLD teams.
Titans are absolutely a cause for concern. Their average crowds for SP's opening year (08) were 21,618... down to 17,877 in 2010. When many teams are growing their average crowds (particularly in Sydney), a 4,000 per game drop in attendances over two years is not screaming "heartland" to me. I suppose though that we can be grateful that it isn't Gold Coast United we're talking about, where 4,000 is considered a boon for soccer fans there.
For the NRL to expand more teams outside NSW are needed. So imo to put an 11th team in NSW is contracting not expanding. QLD has only 3 teams and needs more. That's expansion.
So "dots on a map" is more important than drawing on strengths? Surely expansion means more about generating revenue for the game - which is something the NRL can definitely rely on from a region like the Central Coast and most definitely the North Shore.
The more I'm hearing, the more the CC bid looks doomed.

Rightly or wrongly, CQ are right there in the mix now and Perth is a definite.

You would like to think the NRL/IC will tell the tireless Bears bid team ASAP. Stop stringing them along.
"The more you're hearing"... you're worse than a News Ltd journo. About as much cred as a gossip column with that statement
The Ipswich Times has written off the Bears...

http://www.qt.com.au/story/2010/12/15/western-corridor-NRL-team-name-vote/

Dear lord... Rockin Ronny/Doctor Death will be getting the noose out again...
I'm stunned. Bowl me over. An Ipswich rag has dismissed a competing bid? SHOCKING! lololol
And if any current NRL teams fall by the wayside then so be it.
Some credibility returned to you there Brutus, well said.
The bears stadium is capped at 20,000. Hardly sustainable. Dogs already average over that.
Capped? The Gosford Waterfront will be changing drastically over the next ten years and there would definitely be scope for expansion of the stadium under that plan. Even then, 20,000 is more than all Sydney teams except the Bulldogs average.

Fish where the fish are abundant, but don't fish where all the other fishermen are fishing is another saying!

At least Ipswich now make it interesting! Up until last month it was a two horse race in a two position finish.

Dumb logic? Do you mean illogical? The emotive tone and language of your post would indicate that you yourself are the opposite of logical.

The bears can come out and say, and do as much of their fabled hardwork as they wish. It won't make a lick of difference because a) the NRL has yet to formally announce that they are expanding the competition and b) bids only have to have 'sh*t' when the time for submissions arrives.

The bears are coming from a long way out, a bit like a long distance runner who likes to lead from front to finish. The problem with that is that they are susceptible to the competitor with the burst of speed at the end.

Accept the bears are coming back? - based on what?
As I have said before I am not against the bears coming back in, I just feel that a second Brisbane side and Perth are a lot better options for the competition.

Better options? Maybe, maybe not. I absolutely feel that Perth should accompany the Bears in a return to the NRL. I'm still not convinced we need another team in Brisbane given the fall in crowds recently for the Titans and Cowboys. Whether you believe that's a trolling remark or not I don't care :)

Both the Titans and the Cowboys crowds do concern me, however decreased cowboys crowds don't mean that a 2nd Brisbane teams crowds will be low, Townsville is a long way from Brisbane. My bigger concern with the cowboys is that any new team in QLD, particularly the Central QLD team, will cut into their already small (population rather than geographic) juniors pool.
As for the Titans, Searle's reputation as the bright new thing of administrators is about to go on the line. Overly high membership and seat pricing, the centre of excellence issues and the new GC Scum AFL mob are going to test his abilities.

Disagreement on expansion is always going to happen depending on where you live or your views. The fact that rugby league has so many realistic future options shows our strength.

That's the thing - I'm concerned they're going to throw themselves at an untried and untested area and ignore the Central Coast & North Shore - which can only be a key strength, surely?

What on earth are you smoking? There are seven existing teams within just 100km!!! I'm all for a team based on the Central Coast itself but not if it means an eighth team in that same 100km radius. Meanwhile fans in SE Qld only have two in a radius of more than 500km, New Zealand has only one in the entire country, and Perth's nearest team is several thousand kilometres away.

Absolutely Bears territory is rugby league territory. As is Brisbane. Perth isn't but the potential for it to become partly RL territory cannot be ignored. The ideal scenario would be 4 new teams in the next round of expansion, the above 3 plus a 2nd NZ team, however that isn't going to happen (IMO) because of player numbers and conservative officialdom. So, sadly, it really comes down to either the bears or Bris II. At the moment the bears are far more advanced but who knows what momentum the Ipswich bid will have come judgement day.

Did you miss the bit where "dots on a map" doesn't necessarily mean expanding? A-League's venture into both Gold Coast and North Queensland are prime examples of unsuccessful expansion simply to make a competition look like it has a national coverage.

Regardless of your thoughts on how close existing teams are (I count five within 100km, but whatever), none of those teams are currently making a fulltime effort to capture the hearts or minds of the Central Coast public. There are no "fisherman" there, but just the odd passer-by who wants to cash in on the odd game here or there with no real interest in the grassroots.

That's where the Bears come in - already with close to 5,000 members (about 4,500 at last count from memory)... to fill that void for a public that already loves rugby league and twice been cheated from having it's own team.

I'm sure that regardless of who gets in in 2013, the ones that miss out will have their own team to cheer for in 10 years time.

Q'land seems the most logical choice for a lot of reasons, but there bid isn't as close to being developed as either the Bears or Reds. I have to say it is very doubtful that in 3-6 months (anticipated bid submission date) they could present a stronger bid than either of these two.

If the game wants to put out the last glowing embers from the Superleague war, once and for all, they will admit the Central Coast Bears and the W.A Reds. Here is why. The following teams were sacrificed because of the Superleague war, either directly or indirectly:

Gold Coast (Chargers)
Western Reds
Adelaide
Hunter Mariners
South Queensland
Souths
Wests
Balmain
Norths
Manly

Now, Hunter and Adelaide were both artificial teams created solely to add numbers to Superleague's season draw. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there is even a single person on these forums who supported the Rams? As for the Mariners, I have yet to encounter a person from the Hunter who gave up on League because News Ltd. pulled the plug on them.

South Queensland could consider themselves a bit unlucky, but at the same time if a new Brisbane team wants to thrive, it should be an established QRL side, not a new creation with no previous history, if it wants to compete with the Broncos. Furthermore, if having another NRL side in Qld is such top priority, surely Ipswich or Central Qld is more important than cutting in on the Broncos territory (short-term anyway).

Balmain were looking to relocate long before Rupert Murdoch took an interest in our game, even back in the 80's they looked at relocating to the Central Coast or Melbourne. Returning to Leichardt in 1997 after the Sydney Tigers experiment was only a temporary thing. Old Balmain fans should at least feel lucky their team lives on in Sydney, instead of being an interstate side.

Wests were marked down for extinction long before Sewerleague, if people remember they got kicked out along with Newtown back in '83 but won their way back into the comp via the courts. They did little between 1984 and '99 but bring up the rear of the ladder and draw small crowds, save for finals appearances in 1991-92 and 1995-96.

Gold Coast are now back as the Titans and doing great, Manly are back and have won a Premiership since returning as a stand-alone team and Souths are back and a much more professional team than they were under the chook-raffle administration of the Piggins years.

Which leaves us with the Bears and Reds, two teams from either side of the split who were both dudded by the war. Were it not for Sewerleague, the Reds could have built a solid supporter base in W.A and even have a few talented local juniors in their NRL side. They were a team with a promising future who were sacrificed for a short-term deal. As for the Bears- well the people of the North Shore, and then the Central Coast, lost their team. All the shrill "We have too many teams in NSW!!!" brigade should remember that in the games' most successful season (1994), 13 of the 16 teams were from NSW. When it comes to expansion, I care most about what a potential bid can bring to the game. I couldn't give a f**k about how neat and evenly spread out it will look on a map of Australia, and anybody who isn't a complete moron doesn't give a f**k either. You want to use that argument, then the A-League runs circles around us! Half these people think the Central Coast is part of Sydney, hopefully those who are calling the shots are a little more enlightened.

Admitting the Bears and the Reds has the beauty of finally sewing up those two remaning loose ends dangling after the war. We win the established Norths fanbase on the North Shore (as well as the Central Coast) back on our side, while also re-igniting (and growing) interest amongst our cousins west of the Nullabor, which had its' lifeline yanked free last time before it could bear fruit.

To posters like bobmar and other anti-NSW types, instead of complaining that “oh we have 10 teams in NSW already why have 11”, why don’t you view the situation in reverse?

Can you imagine if the NRL was battling for relevance in Victoria by blowing millions on establishing a 2nd Victorian side… and at the same time the AFL comes out with a powerful statement by admitting a 10th Victorian team in a region cryong out for a team representing 1 million people covering the most affluent part of Melbourne and the admitting regional urban sprawl and growth area nearby? And reviving an old foundation club’s name and colours to boot?

In other words – whilst the NRL is busting its arse to add a 2nd Victorian team, the AFL is making a statement saying ‘up yours, we’re not even finished in Victoria yet’. Can you imagine the pro-AFL types ranting and raving giving this a positive slant and the anti-NRL types pouring negativity on their 2nd Victorian team?

The NRL still expanding effortlessly further reinforcing into its heartlands (where most of the population of Australia lives) by adding a Central Coast team - coupled with a 2nd Brisbane team and/or 4th Queensland team - would be a scary and sobering thought for the AFL who is desperate for relevance in the financially lucrative area of Australia’s east coast. The NRL will be more than matching the AFL in most key indicators, and haven’t even finished expanding to the rest of the country!!! (WA, SA, etc). Whilst the AFL is forcing 2 teams in non-heartland areas because it has nowhere else to go! (except maybe Tasmania).

Having said all that, that’s not to say I am not in favour of the WA Reds bid either. I think the WA Reds and Central Coast Bears should be the next 2 teams in. I am only pointing out that there are pros and cons in expanding in traditional heartland or new horizons.
I am totally behind the WA Reds bid, but “fishing where the fish are” at the same time when your main competitor is battling to establish itself where you are already dominant and yet still expanding is a scary powerful message. The ultimate “up yours”.

Bears tick every box, every single box, to be a long term viable entity. They built the stadium, they have ground support from the CC to the upper and lower North Shore. They are ready to go. This ipswich Qld bid has nothing concrete whatsoever.

Bears and Reds please.

great post here, this sums it up beautifully.

Really, I'd love to see it go back to a 20-team comp. With more TV money, an IC running the game we could really go forward with 20 teams. The spread of teams throughout Australasia would look fantastic.

1 Perth
2. 2nd Brisbane (Diehards)
3. CC Bears
4. 2nd NZ

Bring them in!!

And if any current NRL teams fall by the wayside then so be it.

I find it funny how RL still hasn't found a suitable answer to this problem that drove a wedge in the game 15-20 years ago. Either you

1. Cull or relocate Sydney teams and establish teams in big new markets to generate TV revenue (NSWRL "Super League" model circa 1992)

2. Expand regardless, and let survival of the fittest rationalise Sydney (what the ARL did in 1995)

The "rag" is actually the Queensland Times, but I believe that it is Ipswich based so I used "Ipswich Times" to make it obvious that my comment was tongue in cheek...

Obviously you missed that, and so did your mate who rang up the "rag" to obtain "evidence"....

Do you have a comment on that by the way? You seemed to have addressed every other comment posted today....
