Mate even the tigers won a premiership.

How many clubs would have storm success if they were being bankrolled no matter how much they lost.

In fact its clear that the nrl has manipulated the competition to favour certain teams.

Well it hasnt helped the likes of eels, panthers, broncos or bulldogs who have all been bankrolled from various sources more than the storm in last 5 years. As said money helps but it is no guarantee of success.

Brent Read on TFS today said something along the lines of the NRL are currently negotiating with the clubs, offering tenure to allow tweaks to the funding model.

Tenure would mean a club could not be moved or omitted unless they went bust.

A big part of the problem funding expansion is the salary cap + 30% offer from that egotistical blamonge, John Grant, to save his job. Not SC + $3M, it's SC + 30%, so the gap rises with the cap.

I've always thought the payment should be equal to the cap. That would fund expansion with money to spare.

That won't happen of course with most clubs now addicted to the 30% bonus.

IMO, it's a matter of time until poor management at one club or another. blows the 30% and drives their club to the wall. And I'd be surprised if it's only one club in, say, the next decade.

Fans can help their clubs by turning up to support their teams. I drive from sadelaide to Melbourne to watch my team about 5 times a year( work permitting) and I have been a member since 99.

Also those who do go could start hounding their friends to go as well.

Did they lose 8 million a year?

$4-6mill dependent on club. Storm got $4.3mill from the nrl extra for 5 years as part of the agreement for news Ltd to sell them off. Nrl wanted Storm independent, it was a way of making that happen whilst protecting a significant investment on expansion. It’s worked a treat. The game is growing well in Melbourne, tv audiences have grown significantly, crowds have grown, grass roots conti use to grow invictoria and the storm are now profitable, Storm are most watched club on pay tv. Just like spending millions on other clubs in time of need nrl invested wisely in Melbourne. it makes sense to keep the game stable and growing.

Clubs are in a no win situation. Agree to permenant licenses and they lose the break away threat at negation time, don’t agree to it and the nrl (in theory) can do whatever it likes with the license when the period expires.

Don’t mind the current grant. It was clear clubs were struggling to be sustainable and their cut of the tv money needed to be higher. NRL made a $42mill surplus last year, the money is there for expansion if they want it.

Not always the case though. We’ve had the broke arse sharks win the premiership whilst the eels with $4-5million a year pumped into them from the LC have bounced along the bottom. Money isnt everything in RL.

Well the "broke arse Sharks' are not broke now ,so you're living in the past.Newcastle went broke, ditto Titans,Cowboys had to be helped at one stage,Warriors needed help became privately owned ,ditto Manly,Tigers owed the NRL money,Dragons borrowed from the NRL, now have WIN involved,Souths before Rusty were financial basket cases.
I see it now ,if a club gets in real sh*tter's ditch ,they will be asked to move.Any Sydney club that is able to make a go of it and that should mean all will get a 5 years licence.
Greenberg needs to tell ch9, you run your Tv networking ,and do a better job of promoting the game, you might get better Tv ratings. We'll run the clubs and the number of teams .You're not the only FTA station that would be interested in the NRL or SOO.Stand up to these clowns, nicely of course, with a sledgehammer in the hand behind the back.

Think the grant by Grant should have been on a reducing basis, year on year.

It is the Sharks or Manly. Everyone knows it. Souths, Eels, Dragons, Tigers, Dogs, Eels, are all too big. And you can't take the Panthers out as they are in the only part of Sydney with room for significant population growth in the decades to come.

That leaves Manly and Cronulla. Manly is a small club in an unimportant area. Sharks likewise are just getting in the way.

Eventually a club will take the offer to relocate to Brisbane.

Ironic that Sharks and Manly are not propped up by League clubs, because they don't have the money to do so.And looking at the other clubs mentioned, they are hardly setting the world on fire with crowds if they are supposedly "all big".
Nearly 19,000 today at Shark Park are "getting in the way of poor crowds with other clubs this weekend.
If a club goes broke I'd agree, but what if the the club happens to be an interstate club that is going broke, then teh NRL has a dilemma..

So let me get this right....

The fta broadcaster who currently telecasts only 3 games a week (4 last 5 rounds) wants a Brisbane 2 team and wants to remove a Sydney team. Removing a team doesn’t affect them at all.

And foxtel are happy to keep the teams and expand with Brisbane 2.

I can’t see how this is bad at all. All it really does is shows 9’s negotiating position. They want a Brisbane 2 team they are going to have to pay thru the nose for it. And if fox want another Brisbane team they will have to pay for it because 9 has publicly stated the benefit would deliver a rating bonanza.
