Dani, eating mostly fruit when when you're diabetic is going to f**k you over.

Lentils are also cheap, while I personally don't eat legumes or lentils etc, they're not a bad option.

Honestly, I notice the difference in how I feel when I'm eating right and being active, I used to be a fat merkin, and I can tell you I'm much happier now, I also realised that my bi-polar ius most under control when I eat well. I am eating what I want when I'm eating meat, veggies, eggs nuts and fruit, so I don't feel deprived.

I look at these things from my own experience, epidemiological research and a biochemistry, physiology, psychology, anatomy perspective and that's what I genuinely believe. If someone doesn't value health and fitness etc, or would rather indulge in junk food etc and they believe it makes them happy, that's not my business, humans have free will and that's a wonderful thing. Also, if someone enjoys being fat, that's their choice. I see my job as a trainer to put science based research into a package someone can apply to their training, I give very basic nutrition advice, my qualifications are in exercise prescription nothing more yet.

It's true there's a lot of bullshit in personal training and there's a lot of shit trainers, but if I didn't believe in the service I wouldn't have invested in my own trainer.

There was supposed to be "and veges" on the end of it. As in I only eat enough carbs to keep the diabetes happy. I've been diabetic for 17 years, I know what fructose does to my BSL.

And with my back being so bad it's made me a lot less active so it's hard to balance my BSL.

Sushi has to be the worst bang for your buck item of food. I can spend $20 and still leave hungry

Agreed. I love sushi, but Jesus it's a waste of money.

Aye that's what I'm talking about. Being poor is shit.

These days I eat mince from woolies. 5 bucks a kilo. That's pretty much it, I'm a carnivore.

This was me right after Uni. On the dole for eight months and living in a share house in Newie. Living on Bi Lo pies, creamed corn or baked beans, and whatever my aunt who worked at a bakery would spin my way.

About halfway through that year I started dieting. It was possible on my tight budget, but I was unemployed so had plenty of time to prepare salads and shit.

It amuses me when fitness freaks think they are happier than non-freak people.

You know how I know fitness freak are miserable? They eat carrots.

If they were so happy, they wouldn't spend all of their time at the gym trying to exercise their way to happiness.

Sounds like conjecture based on no experience.

Fair enough. You have 25 dollars, now make 21 meals. Go.

Mate, I have a wife and 2 kids on a single income so I have done the maths

We needed to bring our weekly grocery spend down and also wanted to eat better, both for us and the kids. We analysed what we were spending and we found a tonne of crap. We did up proper meal plans for the week and were very concious of the health factor of the meals we were planning.

In the end we came out nearly 30% less when shopping healthy (more fruit, meat and veges) than when our list was less so (buscuits, icecream, chips, take out meals). We have to work harder and cook more but it most definitely came out much more cost effective.

Trying to make 21 meals from $25 is fairly extreme and if you had to live off that I dare say you would end up malnourished rather than overweight.

That's my point though man, it's not the biscuits chips ice cream, it's the basics. When the only thing you can afford is processed foods and pure carbs, your pretty much f**ked no matter your exercise level. There isn't room for snacks, only shitty food.

If you could buy ice cream and shit before, of course you'll be able to get cheaper buying healthier. But if your eating real shit shit, not junk shit, eating traditionally healthy is a big step up in budget, it really is.

Which processed foods are you refering to though? 2min noodles and such?

Lets do some comparisons:

Cheap crap
- Pack of 5x 2 min noodles = $4.25 for 360g
- Homebrand frozen pizza = $3.23 for 500g
- Homebrand white bread = $1.00 for 650g

Cheap not so crap
- Home brand frozen vegetables = $1.99 for 500g
- Homebrand Eggs = $3.39 for 700g
- Beef mince = $3.98 for 500g

Convince me that you are forced to eat "processed, high carb crap" on a low budget. I just dont buy the $$$ argument

I used to think long term. Ie 1 loaf of bread = lunch for a week. 1 pot of spaghetti = 3 nights dinner. Ect

But I was young and stupid and lazy and fat. Mostly lazy.

3 kilo processed chicken off cuts $15
2 loaves bread $2
2 kilo potatoes $2
1 kilo of carrots $1
1 pumpkin $5

That was my every week. Not a very good diet. I can now substitute the 3 kilos of chicken with woolies mince, which is a godsend. Back when I used to eat like this, mince was still bullshit overpriced. Leafy greens, which is the stuff you really want, is still too out of reach there. Not substantial enough to justify the price. And lean meat is a no go ever really at this budget.

Cliffy is right about the knowledge part of everything though. Eating like that, no matter how much I did, i never lost a thing. My old man was the same, eat the meat three veg shit while working flat out as a scaffolder, still what you'd class as obese. This is a man who walked 15km and lifted 4 tonnes of steel a day.

I got the budget weight loss down pat now though. And no hunger, which traditional diets never address.
