The Brisbane Broncos have won an inter-code battle for the services of talented Mackay junior Dane Gagai.

Gagai, 17, signed with the Broncos last week after also fielding offers from the North Queensland Cowboys, rugby union's Queensland Reds and the Australian Rugby Union.

The Brisbane Boys College Year 12 student is captain of his school's First XV rugby side and had been tipped for a bright future in the code.

But he has a junior league background playing for Mackay Souths, and his father Ray is a former leading Mackay player who was also recruited by Brisbane in 1989.

The fleet-footed centre will play next season for the Broncos in the under 20 Toyota Cup, Brisbane player welfare manager Scott Czislowski said yesterday.

"Dane came from Mackay to Brisbane Boys College and he's been a real success with rugby," Czislowski said.

"We've been fortunate enough to sign him."

Broncos training re-starts on November 12, but as Gagai is in Year 12 his start will be delayed until December 1, Szislowski said.

After a Christmas break, the players will get back into training in January.

This season the Broncos lost the inaugural under 20 grand final to Canberra in extra time, but it'll be a new side next year.

"We only put the boys into the under 20s for a year and they then go to the Queensland Cup," Szislowski said.

"Only four from that grand final side will play again in under 20s."

The Broncos have affiliations with Queensland Cup teams Wynnum Manly, Redcliffe, Norths and the Central Comets.

Czislowski said Gagai would also work full time in a sports program traineeship.

"He'll go to schools and work with kids in sports programs," he said.

"All the under 20 players must work or study full time, they do their training in the evenings or at the weekend.

"It's one of the rules of the NRL, so they have a career to fall back on if rugby league does not work out."

Knights bring in Rabbits hooker

Robert Dillon, Newcastle Herald | October 29, 2008

http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/news/knights-bring-in-rabbits-hooker/2008/10/29/1224956101925.html

NEWCASTLE Knights officials confirmed yesterday that they had agreed to terms with much-travelled hooker George Ndaira, who will join the club on a one-season contract.
Ndaira, 23, spent last season with South Sydney after stints with the Dragons (2006) and Roosters (2007).
He played in 14 first-grade games for the Rabbitohs last season, and Knights coach Brian Smith has earmarked him as his back-up for new recruit Isaac De Gois and rugged utility Matt Hilder.
"Brian wants to avoid, at all costs, the situation we had this year where Kurt Gidley played hooker, fullback and halfback in the one game," Knights strategic development manager Keith Onslow said yesterday. "George played 14 first-grade games for Souths last year and he's a good cover player.
"He can even play a little bit of halfback, if need be."
Ndaira could find himself in contention for Newcastle's top squad in the early rounds of next season as Hilder had a shoulder reconstruction this month and is facing a recovery of five or six months.
De Gois, the former Cronulla dynamo, will be Newcastle's first-choice dummy half next year, but he averaged only 61.8 minutes a game this season, so it is likely Smith will be looking to interchange him at various stages.
Meanwhile, the club's new physical performance co-ordinator, Lee Clark, will ease players back into training when they return from their off-season break on Monday.
"There will be three weeks of phasing in before we get ready for the first full four-week cycle of training, which begins on November 24," Clark said yesterday.
"The first three weeks, we don't do the full program. We just sort of ease into it gradually, if you like."
He said it was unlikely there would be nasty surprises awaiting the players, although he added: "I can't let too much out of the bag."
He warned, however, that they would face various assessments in their first week back, including the dreaded skinfold test.
"We don't do all the tests straight up, because obviously they're all relatively untrained at the moment," he said. "While we look at body fat, we don't do any speed or power testing or anything like that. We'll wait until the first block of training for that."
The majority of Newcastle's players, except those who are recovering from injury or on World Cup representative duty, have already resumed light exercise to keep their bodies ticking over.
"Most of them have been doing something," Clark said.
"I think they're all professional enough to realise that if they have too much time off, they're behind the eight-ball when they get back."
Clark said Newcastle's World Cup contingent, which comprises Kurt Gidley (Australia), Wes Naiqama and Akuila Uate (Fiji) and Richie Fa'aoso and Cooper Vuna (Tonga), would be given a break after the tournament and may not be required back at club training until late December or January.

GRAHAM STAYS WITH THE COWBOYS

http://www.rleague.com/db/article.php?id=31822

North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Centre Ashley Graham has renewed his contract with the Cowboys for an additional three years, extending his commitment to the Club until the end of 2012.

24 year old Graham has played 58 first grade games for the Cowboys since signing in 2006, and his commitment and diligence during this time has seen him become one of the top backs in the Cowboys ranks.

Ashley has been a great asset to the Cowboys scoring 35 tries during his time at the club.

Cowboys Executive Director Peter Parr is delighted to have retained Graham for North Queensland.

"This is a wonderful signing for the club. Ashley has played his best football at the Cowboys. He is a North Queensland Product who will continue to improve under the guidance of Neil Henry," Parr said today.
