Was hilarious tonight. Larmer on One News making a comment to Rovelli about his play bringing back memories of Stacey Jones then asking Price about Jones v Rovelli.

I did enjoy the piece TV3 did on the Lions a few nights ago.

Wasn't long, but it was better than nothing.

LOL, didn't take long for TV1 to start dropping a few subtle little kicks with the slipper into the side.

Last week they were reported as morals to make the GF and certainties for a home final, tonight they were talking about all the "premature hype" ,which they created, and how now they aren't even certain to make the top 8

Slightly OT; did anyone catch McIvors comment on the prematch "all you fair weather fans,we welcome you".

A rye smirk came up on my face after that.

I did appreciate that.

Hi guys

It appears most of you prefer TV3 over TV1 for your league news but I hope by posting (and not anonymously) I can at least challenge your views.

Last night TV1 lead with the Warriors while TV3 lead with David Tua fighting Neville Nobody in a fight that had absolutely no relevance to anything. The Herald this morning also had the Warriors on its front page while it buried Tua on page four or something like that. And this is what we said

Tony Veitch
WELCOME BACK....
AFTER A WEEK OF EXTRAODINARY HYPE... AROUND RECORD CROWDS.. AND THE EXPECTATION OF A SIDE THAT COULD ALL THE WAY IN THE NRL... THE WARRIORS HAVE SUFFERED ONE OF THEIR MOST COSTLY DEFEATS.
COSTLY NOT JUST IN THE FORM OF TWO POINTS... BUT IN DOLLARS AND CENTS.. THE 26=24 LOSS TO CANBERRA NOW MAKES A HOME=FINAL UNLIKELY

DID ALL THE HYPE BACK HOME PLAY WITH THEIR HEADS?

commentator: A massive upset

A PUNCH IN THE GUTS WOULD HAVE HURT LESS THAN THIS REFEREEING MISTAKE LATE IN THE SECOND HALF.....

commentator: Ohhhhh

BUT AT 24=14 UP WITH UNDER A QUARTER OF AN HOUR TO GO IT SHOULDN'T HAVE MATTERED

referee: Lets get on with it Steve

INSTEAD WHAT TRANSPIRED HAS MADE EVERYONE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE TASMAN RETHINK THE WARRIORS PLAYOFF HOPES

Ivan Cleary
I don't think it's going to stop the momentum too much

BUT THOSE ARE BRAVE WORDS CONSIDERING THEY BARELY TOUCHED THE BALL IN THE LAST 12 MINUTES OF THE GAME.... HARDLY THE TYPE OF FORM YOU EXPECT FROM A GENUINE TITLE CONTENDER....

Ivan Cleary
These sorts of games you've got to get over the line,

AND REMEMBER THIS WAS AGAINST A SIDE WHICH BEFORE THIS MATCH HAD LOST SEVEN OF ITS PREVIOUS NINE GAMES.... AND HAD LEAKED 52 UNANSWERED POINTS AGAINST THE BULLDOGS THE WEEK BEFORE.

commentator: Canberra score, what a thrilling comeback

THE OMENS NEVER FELT GOOD FROM THE OUTSET..... STAR FULLBACK WADE McKINNON AGAIN A LATE SCRATCHING WITH HIS PROBLEM ANKLE...

THE WARRIORS LUCKY NOT TO CONCEDE IN THE FIRST 20 SECONDS

commentator: Todd Carnie

BUT THEY DID SETTLE DOWN.... MICHAEL CROCKETT PUTTING A TERRIBLE WEEK BEHIND HIM AND THEN MANU VATUVEI FLYING HIGH...

commentator: He's held one in the air

THE WARRIORS LEADING 18-14 AT THE BREAK

NATHAN FEIN'S TRY IN THE 53RD MINUTE SHOULD HAVE SEALED IT.... ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING MICHAEL WITT WAS LANDING ALL HIS KICKS.... YET THE JINX THAT HAS SEEN NO WARRIORS SIDE WIN IN CANBERRA IN TEN YEARS CAME BACK TO HAUNT THEM....

TALK OF THE PLAYOFFS NOW HASE BEEN BANISHED

Ivan Cleary
A tough game against Manly at home that's all we can worry about

HYPE ABOUT A HOME SEMI FINAL NOW LOOKS EXTREMELY PREMATURE... INFACT NOW.. EVEN THE PLAYOFFS ARE NOLONGER A CERTAINTY.

Now I stand to be corrected but that was an accurate report. TV3 on the other hand lifted a match report from the game from an AUSTRALIAN network which had absolutely no relevance to New Zealand viewers. It did not take into account what that result really meant to the Warriors and focused far too much on Canberra (which really was no surprise when you consider where they got it from). And the Warriors, without a doubt, were the biggest story of the weekend.

Last night TV1 provided New Zealanders reporting on a New Zealand story yet most of you it continue to knock us.... why?

I can only assume it's the message you don't like. But I make no apology that I try desperately to report things as they are.... the good and the bad. I don't hide the bad and I don't overdo the good. Credit where credit is due and in the last couple of weeks it would be foolish for any journo to knock the Warriors. But any creditable journalist must also be able to critically analyse under par performances… not be afraid to pull any punches.

It appears many of you perceive me and TVNZ as anti Warriors but I would challenge you to look at the weekend just gone from my perspective. Saturday night I watched the game in a pub and after the game people were genuinely pissed off. The next morning people are asking me... what does that result mean?? Fans on this forum and others seemed to be really frustrated. What do I do? Not report it how it was? To do that would be wrong. Yet TV3 showed complete distain to its New Zealand viewers in doing what it did.

Tonight, you should be watching TV1 because I guarantee the story we have on will generate good and bad debate. It is not a 'negative' story... I haven't even done the interviews yet but as long as you are talking about what I do then I am doing my job correctly. You've also got to realise, sports journalism is not appeasing the fans.... its being responsible to ALL viewers... fans and non fans.

Finally, if you feel the need to have a crack at me or question me don't hesitate to contact me directly. I am completely approachable and if I am wrong on anything I will hold my hand up. craig.stanaway@tvnz.co.nz And if you prefer criticising me on this or any forum, go ahead. I am not in the least bit offended and I would prefer you talked about my reports than not talk about me at all.

It promises to be an interesting couple of weeks ahead.

Thanks for fronting up Craig. Good stuff

I guess some of the coverage is frustrating for us hardcore league fans, in respect to the way you guys change the angle of your report so quickly following a series of wins, or an unexpected loss.

There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. Either the Warriors are on fire and are grand final contenders, or they are absolutely hopeless. What some sections of the media (and the fairweather fans) fail to grasp is that the NRL is one of the tightest competitions in the world, and that there can be a very fine line between winning and losing

The report does seem to take the angle of kicking the Warriors while they are down. The Warriors haven't been talking themselves up, it has been you guys. They knew that the Raiders in Canberra was a danger game. They wern't getting ahead of themselves. It was the media who started talking them up as premiership contenders, not the players. It seems pretty harsh to put it back on the team and suggest they were caught up in the hype when they suffer a close loss against a team who has scored more points at home than any other in the competition.

I guess I just don't like the way you guys oversensationalise things at times. The Warriors are only just starting to regain some goodwill from the public after things went pearshaped three seasons ago, it seems like you guys are just waiting for them to fail so that you can stick the boot in and that you get some sort of enjoyment out of seeing them trip up...

yes good on you Craig.
We all cop it on here so join the club.

I agree with Blaze.

We watch TV1 news and it seemed the league news was either very negative, or if we the Warriors had more than 1 or 2 wins, they were the best thing since sliced bread.

Or if there was anything negative in the league world, the boot would be put in continually.

No middle ground, no general 'how things are going' type stuff.

Like you say, your news coverage is being talked about, whether it be good or bad, and that can all be good for a reporter I'm sure.

Nice to know you're listening to the reactions.

Good on you mate. It takes guts to stand up to critisism and answer your critics.

You did it in spades.

Welcome to LeagueUnlimited, as Ali said, we all cop it on here (me more than most:lol: )

Cheers

Thanks, Craig, for fronting up. Glad to know someone above ground is listening to our gripes.
The type of thing that gets to me most is editing a story out of context. I guess you have to use file footage, but it made me cringe everytime there was a report on Michael Crockett's case the video clip was of him being sent off. This had no relevance to the story and put the player, and by association the Warriors, in a bad light. The guy has only been sent off once yet he has scored many tries, surely one of these would have been more representational of him?
You can't please all the people all the time and a sensational story will grab the public's attention quicker than a well balanced one. Having said that I guess any publicity is better than no publicity and to be getting TV prime time coverage the Warriors must be going OK.
You have to appreciate we are all frustrated and so blame those nearest to hand; in order: the referee, the coach, the commentator.
Again, thanks for dropping by and hopefull we can give you another positive story before the end of the year.

It occurred to me the other day what the biggest problem is with the NZ media in regards to the Warriors - there is no middle ground. They're either rubbish and lucky to avoid the wooden spoon every time they miss the eight, and if they get close to the eight they're suddenly going to win the premiership.

I said it first.

Thanks for posting Craig. To be fair, the Warriors were talking themselves up during the week - i saw Evarn talking about how the Grand Final was getting closer. But for the most part, and i saw this on Good Morning today, is that everyone is now pointing and laughing at the Warriors for creating their own hype, when the media is largely responsible for the hype.

What nobody has said in the media is that the Raiders are a top eight team at home. They'd probably win the minor premiership if they played 24 games in Canberra. The Warriors are not the only top team to fall to the Raiders this year.

I do agree that TV3 do seem to have their priorities mixed up at times.

I'll watch tonight. Hopefully later in the week there might be something on the 77 Auckland side and Carlaw Park.

yep sorry mate, didn't read your comment. Although obviously I agree.

Didn't see Evarn talking it up, all I heard was Price and Wiki talking up the Raiders at home and giving them the respect they showed us they deserved...

cheers for answering Craig.

When I originally posted this thread, it was a reaction to the way you handled the interview with Wade McKinnon and digging for dirt on his days at Parramata.
I still cant understand the NZ journos desire to dump sh*t on a game that struggles for a semblance of acceptance in a union orientated country.

I remembered your interview a couple of years back with, then Warriors captain, Monty Betham. I was hoping that Monty would have belted you that day, you came across as 'untouchable' and the interview was a disgrace. When you assumed the "terrier worrying the rat" with McKinnon, you could almost feel Wades anger through the tele.

I really dont know if that is the sort of crap your bosses at TVNZ expect you to serve up regarding league, if it is then rest assured that I for one will be letting as many people I can know that you are a self serving, sensation seeking wanker.

I can understand why people involved in the game are reluctant to grant interviews to writers of disrespectful garbage.
This has a flow on effect to the genuine fan who is left in the dark, information wise, regarding creditable news on his club.

BTW, Tony Veitch has one thing you could use, he is genuine.

Watched the interview with Ridgey to-nite.
Bloody great what he had to say too. Had gone off him for a while actually cause he was always tearing their house down. Like the comment he made, even if we dont make the top four, there are teams out there wary of us.

Sorry Craig, I dont buy you bullsh*t, mainly because I wait for another Warrior that you will take a poke at.

If that is really you replying Craig then piss off to another forum. You are a perfect example of gutter journalism. The way you treated Monty when talking to him about his 100th game stunk of immaturity and sarcasism. pity Monty was calm and didnt throw a couple on your chin.

then the bullsh*t interview to McKinnon talking about his Parra days etc. What the hell is your agenda. As Bash said you could see McKinnon getting frustrated with you but still you didnt show any respect. TV3 wipes TV1s ass when it comes to sports news and in particular League. Have you done any stories on the Lions or the upcoming 20 year anniversary of the Auckland side. No its just when the Warriors are going good lets jump on board but when the Warriors lose its lets put the boot in and compare them back to the dark old days when the Warriors were in a slump.

As far as the Warriors go, yes they are having an awesum season and hit a hiccup against the Raiders. But if they have won all 23 games this year and are in 1st place or lost all 23 and getting the spoon, all of us here cheer them on week after week cos we are FANS. We support them through thick and thin. It has been tough since the heydays of 2003/03 but finally we are seeing success and yet we have to put up with gutter journalism from people who like to get reactions.

I will never watch TV1 sports news again cos its tossers like you that try and put the boot into League. f**k off and report Union twat

I liked the part where Craig says, "reporting as they are"

What garbage. Reading all the parts in capitols from the report you can clearly see they are trying to paint an implosion of the season after 1 2pt loss.

Also on 1 News tonight, the agenda they put forward to EVERY move Tua makes is sickening. Always trying to put Tua down and talk Shane Cameron up in the same piece

How does it go again? No news is good news or any news is good news?

I was thinking earlier today that our media are always having a go at minorities. Is that because the majority are always supportive at putting the boot into guys struggling at the bottom of the ladder?

Here's some examples of bullsh*it reporting:

1. Hone Harawira the Maaori MP goes walkabouts. I've never seen Winstone Peters the Maaori MP get referred to like that.
2. Tainui in financial turmoil. The BNZ were bailed out by the government for $$Millions and only attracted a week of headlines as opposed to Tainui's months. It's good to see Tainui footing it with other successful corporations now without any bailing out.
3. Asian driver bashed Rodney King style. People of all races get the bash after a police pursuit ends.
4. The Black caps are a winning chance in the world cup. Bullsh*t. How about giving softball some good positive media attention seeing that they are the reigning world champs for a number of years.

I take my hat off to Craig for his response. I know for sure that other media reporters lurk in the backgrounds and troll for leads to some of their stories.

I challenge each and everyone of you to put your name forward and that way people on here may give you inside scoops or better still suggest what you should write about.
