the sad thing is that with the nrl, if you were part of the general public you'd have little idea of what matches were going on in the week.. unlike AFL on the other hand.. :roll:

Their claim that the Tigers have the highest average away attendances is doubtful, however the remaining stats seem correct.

Haven't read the last couple of pages, so it might have already been discussed .. but the Tigers' claim at having the highest average away attendances is indeed a load of crap.

I'll give you the average away attendances of the Dragons in regular season fixtures. In general, the Dragons are far and away above every club in the NRL for away attendances - fans of other clubs always enjoy watching the Dragons come to play, because they are one of the teams most clubs "really want to beat" .. for a number of reasons.

Stats are in the following format: YEAR - RANK - CROWD - HIGHEST (2nd if Dragons 1st)

2009: 1st, 26312, Storm (23594)
2008: 4th, 17707, Eels (19072)
2007: 6th, 16826, Bulldogs (19049)
2006: 1st, 20851, Bulldogs (18383)
2005: 1st, 22343, Roosters (18561)
2004: 1st, 18787, Bulldogs (18361)
2003: 1st, 21269, Eels (18262)
2002: 3rd, 15335, Bulldogs (16184)
2001: 4th, 13933, Eels (18408)
2000: 2nd, 16889, Sharks (19087)

Edit: So the Dragons have had the highest away attendance 6 times since 1999, and only been outside the top 4 teams on one occasion - that was 2007, after we had lost Barett, Bailey, Timmins and others (so the "superstar team" factor wasn't there), and a terrible first half of the season which kept crowds down across the board for the club.

Without having statistics at hand, I'd also venture to say that the Dragons have fans more widely dispersed around Sydney than most other Sydney clubs. For example, almost all Cronulla fans live in the Shire, almost all Penrith fans live at the foot of the mountains, almost all Roosters fans live in the Eastern Suburbs, and a large majority of Manly fans live on the Northern Beaches. Most Canterbury fans live in the inner west and south-west.

The other Sydney clubs (Eels, Tigers, Souths) would be more likely to have fans spread across Sydney. Wests Tigers mainly because of the fact they now have fan-bases in the outer west and inner city suburbs.


P.S. Your statement that we are likely the best supported team in the country is technically incorrect, as I believe Brisbane have the most fans .. but being a one-team city, and for the majority a one-team rugby league-dominated state, it is a little unfair to make that comparison. It's more correct to say that the Dragons are the most widely supported club in the country.

Lets also hope that the numberof ticket sales being thrown around for Sunday's game are true, as it will be great for the game of Rugby League if we can crack 40,000.

you will find a lot of the older brigade in QLD who were young and impressionable during the Dragons glory years are fans of the club because of the success they gained, and may have "brainwashed" (TIC) their offspring to do the same, that is the only reason I have behind the Dragons popularity up here in QLD. They are very, very popular for a NSW based team.
