Crowds over 25,000

The 50,000 plus crowd at Suncorp today was the 18th game this season to draw 25,000 or more fans. This seasons total is down by 4 on last seasons figure of 22.

2007 19 games with a crowd of 25,000 or more
2008 21
2009 16
2010 22
2011 18

We have had a drop off in big crowds this season compared to previous seasons, except for 2009.

In the past 5 seasons (premiership games) we have had 96 games pass the 25,000 mark. Brisbane leads the list with 52 folliowed by the titans and Bulldogs with 9 each. Twelve of the sixteen NRL teams have drawn a crowd of 25,000. The four teams not to have reached that total are Penrith, Cronulla, Canberra and Manly.

Of the 96 games with crowds of 25,000+ 68 have been for teams outside of Sydney. That is a percentage of 71.

In the last 5 seasons their has been 15 games that have drawn crowds of 40,000 plus. 12 have been by the Broncos, 2 by the Titans (played at Suncorp) and 1 by the Bulldogs.

Seasons 2007 and 2009 lead with the most 40,000 plus crowds with 4 each. Seasons 2010 and 2011 come next with 3. Season 2008 had just one game.

Crowds under 10,000

Tonights game between the Roosters and Storm drew a crowd of just over 8,000. This season we had 23 games where the crowd was less then 10,000.

How this compares to previous four seasons

2007 31 games with a crowd of less then 10,000
2008 36
2009 27
2010 22
2011 23

In the past 5 seasons (premiership games) we have had 139 games where the crowd was less then 10,000. Cronulla leads the list with 23 folliowed by the Roosters on 20 and Panthers on 18. Of the out of Sydney clubs Canberra has had the most with 15.

In the past 5 seasons forteen of the sixteen NRL teams have drawn a crowd of lrss then 10,000 in at least one game. The two teams not to have done so are Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Of the 139 games with a crowd of less then 10,000 100 have involved a Sydney home team. That is 72 percent

The smallest crowd in the past 5 seasons was in 2007 when 4,202 attended a Sharks v Warriors game.

In the past 5 seasons there has been 16 games where the crowd was 6,999 or lower. Forteen of those games had a Sydney home team.

The Tigers only crowd under 10,000 was in 2009 against Brisbane at Campbelltown (9,675). It helps that the team's performances have been reasonably consistent through that period. I'm not sure how many would turn up if we were in Souths' position, for example.

That was a really wet game wasn't it? Seem to remember the Tigers scoring a try by sliding about 10m.

surely Broncos will sell out, if not, go close to and.. Storm v Knights should still get above 23k imo at the very least

I would say that this year's weather is the single biggest reason why we didn't break the record again.

Expecting good finals figures still, and hopefully break the overal record...

A combined crowd of about 118K this weekend will have the year level pegging with 2010 when the first week crowds were shockers thanks to SGI and Penrith having home ground finals. I think the real determinant will be the preliminary final which has had crowds >70K the last two years.

Tigers vs Dragons (current forecast Partly cloudy. possible showers) 47,000
Chance of cracking 50k on a fine night, two big Sydney supporter bases

Broncos vs Warriors (fine, sunny) 48,500
These two teams drew 37,173 in Round 22 on a fine Saturday night

Manly vs Cowboys (Partly cloudy. Isolated showers later in the day) 21,000
Potential for rain and late kick off could keep this under 20k, hard to judge as played at SFS

Storm vs Knights (Cloudy. Isolated showers) 19,500
Week 1 finals crowd vs Manly @ Etihad 2009 was 21,155; 2008 vs Warriors @ OP was 15,193...Carlton vs Essendon at MCG may have impact

Yes our only hope is if Manly play St George or the Tigers in the preliminary. Even then those match ups don't have the same pulling power as St George v Tigers or Parra v Bulldogs.

If it's Storm v Dragons in Melbourne, that could be a big, big crowd.

Be interesting to see how member sales go today for ANZ, it could well be the case that 20,000 tickets will already be sold.
