What are the chances of declining crowds at both NRL (and AFL for what it is worth) games such as GC v Broncos being due to an impending recession in Australia?

Of course economic factors are always in issue on regards to having the disposable income. The bigger grants with a new TV deal should come with a condition of slashed ticket prices. I can understand why the GC crowd was so low, it costs an arm and a leg to get in there.

The recession call is either bullshit or a poor QLD excuse. Sydney crowds are generally on the up and in many cases lately only limited by the ground capacity (last night and last Sunday for example).

If todays afl game between suns and lions tops last night at skilled it will be pretty embarassing for league folks in SEQ. I'm willing to give manly the benefit of the doubt if the capacity has been reduced for a time, but i am confident mid 20's would have been easily obtained at a Allianz or ANZ.

While the titans v broncos is a derby in a geographical sense i feel it is still too young to generate a genuine hatred between the clubs and fans that leads to automatic sellouts associated with derbies world wide. I don't sense any hatred between the fan sets so i would call it a soft derby tbh.

Souths v Dragons should be getting 30k tonight. Given souths are top 4 material and dragons are hunting for a finals spot

There is absolutely no doubt Manly's capacity is down to 17,000 - shoulder to shoulder on the hill, no spare seating anywhere in view. Construction work still ongoing in north west corner probably shaves 1-2k off.

Hmmmm, 30k I can't see. Weather will put paid to a lot of travelling fans from both sides (Homebush being in Rabbitoh territory and all :sarcasm:)

Gold Coast crowd is very poor considering they're a lot better than last year and are making a push for the finals and played the massive team from up the road also doing well. That game should be a near sell out.

As for the Manly game, it would have got more than double in ANZ.

The ARLC says they're looking at moving big games to big stadiums, a game like that will be the first to go in the future.

And btw, they need to build another grand stand at Brookvale. Sub17k capacity should not be NRL standard.

People standing on hills should not be NRL standard. It's embarrassing.

People want to. They choose to. It's part of the game day experience whether anyone likes it or not.

The best solution for rugby league in coming years and decades IMO is to ensure 75% of games are played at modern, mid- to large-capacity venues.

The matches against low-drawing opposition from interstate - build the interest in those by playing those matches at boutique grounds (Brookvale, Leichhardt, Kogarah, Belmore etc etc).

We don't have to be copying the AFL to be successful.

Last night also offered further proof that SEQ does not need another NRL team.

oh the kings of a crowd fudge will ensure this happens

but don't be fooled
15K will actually rock up ... the Thuns will announce it at 22K , just so it beats the NRL figure :sarcasm:

Nrl should bring in license criteria like SL did. Stadium size min 20k with x amount undercover seating. Might motivate govt's to get some of the grounds upgraded if there is a real risk of their clubs losing licenses.

The Tits are known for their bullshit crowds. This one may have been close to the mark but there has been times the near unanimous opinion was that they found 30% out of thin air.

It seems like all Gold Coast clubs are talented at creative crowd total announcements.

Perth Red, the NRL will never do that because the clubs won't allow it because the clubs control things. The clubs won't risk their existence on the possibility of getting governments to hand over taxpayer money in tight economic times.

- 20K at Leichhardt - We need to move every match to modern stadia
- 12K at a suburban ground - people dont like suburban grounds, need to move every match to modern stadia

Talk about damned if you do damned if you dont.

I think there's definitely a case for moving certain matches to bigger grounds but in an area such as Sydney where everything is so spaced apart etc it's unrealistic to expect every manly match to be played out of the SFS etc . There'll need to be a compromise

No, the NRL will never do that again because they don't want to end up in court again like last time they did.

The NRL is the ARLC. The ARLC is controlled by the clubs. As it should be.

The clubs should never be in a situation where an outside source, whether it be government or tv or whoever, end up controlling whether clubs live or die.

The government wants stadium consolidation. The government has a limtied amount of money to take care of all the stadiums we have now. Under PR's plan Manly, Penrith, Cronulla and St George would be killed very quickly.
