Crowd Watch Mk 3

70K very good crowd. Good to see Rusty there making a surprise visit, feel sorry for him though. If Adam Reynolds doesn't get injured then the result might have been a lot different, the Rabbits had the upper hand up to that point.

Pity it couldn't beat the 2009 and 2010 crowds, but lack of media hype this time may have been a factor. But the NRL has come along way from 30 and 40K crowds at prelims as the norm only a few years back.

69146 at the MCG tonight. So, that means we beat the AFL for having the highest preliminary final attendance this year. When was the last time that happened?

It is the first time the NRL or NSWRL had the highest prelim final crowd compared with AFL/VFL. Even in the 60's the highest prelim crowd was 57K and the AFL crowds were not below 80K for prelims in those years.

Lets not overstate things. This is their average crowds in recent years:

2009: 11, 978
2010: 14, 670
2011: 14, 246
2012: 12, 685

Yes they've had a bit of a dip in 2012 but in the 18 months following the scandal in 2010 and 2011 they had their best ever crowds.

Victorians don't care if the Storm cheated. They just get a kick out of "beating the northerners at their own game".

Yeah true it galvanised Storm supporters more than anything else. I think what the scandal may have affected though was the Storm's ability to gain new supporters for a bit at least.

This year's average was down for the Storm probably due to the horrible weather (was it Melb's worst day in 30 years?) they had for the Brisbane game (13K when it should have been 20K+) and the bad weather for the Tigers game (11K when it could have been 15K+). Also rainy day for Warriors game on ANZAC day kept it down a bit and no home game against the Dragons.

Leica you are wrong in point 3.. In 2009 we played the donkeys on GF night as I watched the GF at Crown Casino then went over to Etihad stadium to watch Storm demolish donkeys.Geelong beat St Kilda in the afl GF

 Yeah was trying to say that in really crappy English.

There were more dogs fans there last night. It's was extremely close, I'd say 51/49 dogs it was that close. Well done to all supporters it was a great atmosphere.

I sat L6 Cat 1 in the rabbits area and we could hear the dogs almost as loud as the rabbits fans they were that loud. When Reynolds went off the rabbits were definitely quieter

Just from attending it seemed like there were fewer really poor crowds this year, I think we only had one or two sub 10k as opposed to four or five in 2011. So the average is down but there were more regulars. Record number of members also so the core support base is growing. A GF appearance should give crowds a boost next season too.

As a neutral who was at parra dogs 09 and dragons tigers 10 and last night dogs south's i would say atmosphere wise 09 still has them all covered. Last night and 10 were still awesome though, as for the split I'd say the dogs had a better scattering around the non tv end so if i had to bet I'd guess a fraction more dogs fans.

Great crowd great atmosphere the recent tend of 70k preliminary crowds in Sydney is something we need to continue

The necessary pre requisite for a really huge Prelin attendance is that 2 of the Big Sydney sides ( Souths, Eels, Dogs, Dragons, Tigers ) meet. The likes of hthe Dogs and Souths going well is good for the game.

Playing the Broncos game 2 days after the State of Origin is not as good an idea as the NRL, even I couldn't swing the missus to attend 2 games of League in 3 days.

It was a crappy winter though, and its still f**king going, its 15 max tomorow and 13 on Friday??

If I had to nominate a split, it was 50:50 or just 51:49 to us. Hard to tell.

I thought there were more Rabbitohs fans there. But the Bulldogs made a lot more noise. They were brilliant the way they backed their Club. I had one hell of a night starting with 6 heart starters at my mates place, and a further 8 heart at the Brewery before buying half strength crap at the ground!

Would be good for ch9 to have mic's pointed at the stands like they do in SL. 12k at warrington sounded louder than 70k at anz yet at the game the atmosphere and noise would have been amazing I'm sure. Ch9 needs to work harder at getting it across in their production of the game.

The 25k at AAMI sounded better than the 70k last night.

Although the AAMI game was a rare exception to the normal suckiness of Nine.

The split has been exactly halfway for all games, that doesn't mean it's automatically 50/50

As I said if it wasn't 50/50 it was 51/49, nothing in it.

The Wests prelim? Was that over 70k? If it was, my bad. Still, no one does atmosphere like Dogs supporters. Souths celebrations for tries sounded like conversions compared to Dogs.
that's probably because you were sitting in the Dogs section

To be fair they only scored one try ;-) Hard to gain much momentum with the noise when that's the case
