Crowds for the World Cup

In hindsight it was probably a mistake to give Townsville two games. I'm sure they'll be out in force when the Kangaroos are up there.

Maybe England v PNG should have gone to Newcastle with England v NZ being played in a capital - like Perth or Brisbane.

10,000 odd people in total, at least half of whom were English or PNGean. Awful turn out from the locals, this was one of the games we were banking on having a good crowd.

I am talking Rugby league prices, way to expensive.

As well as that, NO PROMOTION AT ALL.

I am talking NOTHING.

I am a league die hard so I went.

This is something that I think is overrated.

If you read your local paper you knew the game was on and they still didn't turn up. Its not like it was completely hidden.

Amazing lack of interest from a town that still thinks the NBL is a worthwhile sporting pastime.

Piss poor from Townsville. Don't deserve an Aussie game but that is probably one of the main reasons for tonight. Whenever you give a venue two games and one game is much bigger than the other the lesse game has no chance. I remember a couple of years ago Port Mac had two trial games two Saturdays in a row (that's right bloody two, how many do we get west of the hill???) one was Brissy v Canberra and the other Parra v Penny. For some reason all the talk was about the Parra game even though the Brisbane game was on first. I went to that one and there was only about 5k there but the next week the Parra game was packed out. Tonight's game should have been somewhere else, maybe Perth - it might as well have been with Nein showing it so late anyway.

Mr O’Neill said ticket prices are very affordable and everyone has the opportunity to experience the passion and power that Rugby World Cup 2003 generates either in their home city or interstate.
Individual ticket prices to some matches are as low as $5 and $10 while generous family packages (two adults and two children) can be bought for $20.

Some bloke on rugbyxiii.com also claimed he paid $3 to go to France - USA in Wollongong.

look the crowd wasnt as brilliant as we could have liked but there was definately a passionate support for both sides and the game was a brilliant one for everyone watching across the world.

Just remember the important audiences in albania, lithuania, somalia, nigeria and upper mongolia who all saw this live....

You're taking the mick, fair enough, but on telly, with a bit of creative directing, the crowd looked decent.

I remember Ireland v Samoa, opening match of 2000 WC and the stadium was empty! This was a vast improvement and a colourful opening to the comp.

that number looks very generous... I have never seen Dairy Farmers that empty, would be interesting to know NQ lowest ever crowd there..

Wait till the soccer team get in there next year, you'll be struggling to find a bewildered North Queenslander who accidentally wandered into the stands in the middle of a monsoon...

Ha ha, serves them right. This was the game Perth was bidding for. We'd have got 20,000+ for it. Love to know what was more exciting in FNQ tonight than a World cup game of RL featuring two entertaining teams.

No promotion isn't just about making the public aware something is on. It is about creating an image about the event so that people want to attend.

It's what should have prompted the locals to make the steps from knowing about the game to making the decision to purchase.

having it in townsville attracted a good crowd of PNGs, apparently the flights from png to townsille were all booked

you guys probably would've gotten a better crowd.. but think of the Papua New Guineans! ;)
