And I agree that most clubs cheat the cap and it's only parras dysfunction that got them caught but signing Jennings while under investigation is beyond the pale.

Just staggering arrogance.

calculated risk

they could potentially still end up winning the premiership or at least dumping some other teams out of the finals

and there is always next year

as I said before I think a points deduction for next season as well would be more of a punishment

Bang on.

The storm and the bulldogs won premierships after being busted for cheating. It's easier to retain players then to sign them.

Rebuilding the squad by cheating, copping the punishment and shredding fringe players for minimum wage scrubs is a viable strategy.

Just sad for the Eels fans with this result, because all the merkin board members had to do was fess up and assist the NRL in the investigation and this all could have happened over a month ago and the Eels could have been playing for points. Now because those selfish merkins wanted to protect their own jobs the season is too far gone for them to realistically still make the finals. They're still a chance I know but its virtually impossible.

Once you get certain Christians from a certain middle eastern background involved in running a club, you just know the shit will eventually hit the fan.

Same in politics.

The problem is that's essentially how you describe every single person involved with the club politically. There is no doubt this all came about because of one of these merkins. Obviously we can't name names here, and obviously we were breaking the rules. But the kind of person who runs at board level is exclusively the kind of person who gleefully leaked this stuff to the media and is watching the club burn to score themselves a little bit of a revenge boner. Makes me sick.

Thing is Baz... Everyone who is on the Parra board would be acutely aware that they have several people out there who want their spot. Some of these want to be's have fairly well placed friends still within the club.

So many people with an axe to grind who would undermine board members given any possible opening and still, some of these guys went ahead and oversaw a system of systematic cap rorting anyway.

Just plain stupid.

So why don't the teams that have already played Parramatta and lost get the points for those games instead. Otherwise the punishment for that game is the same for both Parramatta who were cheating and for the other team who played a side that was cheating

I don't think it's anywhere near 'virtually impossible' for them to make the finals.

It's going to be hard. Even if it takes them a month to sort out their cap and get under, that means that will be 3 maybe 4 games they can't earn points in. That leaves them with 11 or 12 games (plus 2 byes) to get to 28 points which may be the cut off.

Eels fans want to be cheering now for whoever plays Panthers, Warriors, Raiders and Sea Eagles, if these teams seem like the main competitors for spots 6 to 8.

Every other team should just refuse to take Parra players on this year as they are all contracted and other teams would have to fit them under their cap and with the position Parra is in they would not want to be paying any part of those contracts. If you are not getting a high quality player why would you bother taking on average players and helping the Eels out???

There was the same issue when it happened to the Bulldogs and Storm, bit hard to suddenly make a different decision now than what was made when it has happened in the past.

Here is my idea for clubs caught deliberately cheating the cap. Total up every game they are over...say if it's 3 years let's say 70 games they then are retroactively are stripped of the points from years gone by and it's added to this year's points table.

So the eels would go to -152ish and the minus would carry over each year until they get back into the positive with a salary cap compliant squad. So they win 10 games this year they move to -132 points.

When they get back into the positives in a decade they would have had no gain from their illegally built team. I'm mostly joking here lol

It really depends how soon they're playing for points.

But they are still a big chance, have a pretty easy draw from here, and have a lot of games against fellow fringe 8 contenders, so have some control over how their competitors go.

Next few weeks are really important. If they can win (and the points count) 3 or 4 in a row, and Raiders/Panthers/Warriors/Sea Eagles lose a few, they'll be right in it again.

One not unrealistic go of the ladder predictor I tried (with the top 4 teams dominating to lower the top 8 threshold) had the Eels back in the 8 by round 20.

Teams would end up defunct if that happened, nobody buying memberships, nobody buying merchandise, nobody turning up to games.

Unless parra release the player but still pay out his contract

Most teams have their cap sorted this year, so I can't see them taking them under their own cap

so $ 570k is worth 12 points. Does that mean when we get these breaches that happen at the end of every year this same formula will be used?

I expect that for every $ 47,500 any club is over the cap is a one point deduction.

Releasing low wage players wont help much because they just have to replace them with minimum wage under the cap.

Really the first thing the NRL should say is Jennings has to go for a start.
