People now reporting the NRL refused to meet with the club yesterday because the five muppets aren't stepping down....seriously, I'm all for sacking these shit merkins, but surely the NRL is playing right into their hands regarding their procedural fairness argument by cancelling a meeting with the salary cap guys to try and get the team under?

Part of the sanctions were these 5 going period. If they aren't going voluntarily then what can the nrl do? Not as if they haven't warned Parra about this clause. The NRL doesn't need to do a thing until these 5 go. Then they can come in and get the team under the salary cap. Parra have forfeited the right for the NRL being nice as soon as these 5 took court action.

Some leagues don't play for points at all. NBA, NFL etc..they also don't have hard caps(atleast the NBA doesn't) so if you go over the cap you pay a very high 'luxury tax' to the league but it isn't against the rules, most teams(owners) still try hard to avoid it. Punishments in the NBA and NFL come in the form of fines, banishments and loss of draft picks.

Surely there are soccer teams that have lost points before though.

I realise you're a special kind of stupid, what with abandoning the mother of your child in LA and all, but you do realise that a Supreme Court injunction kind of tops an NRL clause....right? Whether or not I agree with them getting it, they did.

You honestly think the NRL has handed down a punishment to Parramatta without outlining the details of the case made against them to the relevant parties?

Parramatta Lord Mayor Paul Garrard slams NRL over Eels salary cap breach report

Date

Harrison Vesey

Parramatta Lord Mayor Paul Garrard has slammed the NRL over what he calls a "savage" directive lacking procedural fairness.

The NRL's Integrity Unit handed down its preliminary findings on Tuesday morning in a report that accused the club of systematic salary cap rorting, dating back to at least 2013.

Mr Garrard, who is on Parramatta Rugby League Club's board of directors, said he believes the allegations refer to the actions of previous board members.

"What is the system? I haven't seen any system there," Mr Garrard said.

He said the report "reads like a movie script" with reliance on what he called "subjective allegations".

"Ironically it was people who disgraced the club in their time here who have given evidence [to the NRL].

"The people involved in this nonsense are clearly not with the club anymore, and they've got a lot to answer for."

The NRL claims the club will need to wipe $570,000 from its budget to be compliant with the 2016 salary cap.

Mr Garrard said he believes the current Parramatta Eels squad is within the 2016 cap, speculating whether the figure was a cumulative total from previous seasons before his time on the board.

He likened the report to a jigsaw puzzle and said the club still does not know the specifics of the allegations against them.

On Tuesday night the Supreme Court of NSW issued an injunction against the NRL, which will permit the directors and officers of the club to carry out their duties until a hearing next week.

"The board was left exposed. We have 100 employees needing direction every day," Mr Garrard said.

"This will give us time to get appropriate personnel in to run the club, get a team on the field, and analyse the documents provided to us."

Mr Garrard said he believes all accusations of wrongdoing date back to actions of previous board members.

"I can't comment on the board before my arrival but the present members are very conscious of the salary cap. We had a rogue CEO in Scott Seward and I think it took the board two months to remove him."

Mr Garrard said Parramatta prides itself on being a community club, and an NRL recommendation to bring in three independent directors by August would impact that negatively.

"It's no secret the NRL likes clubs controlled by individuals not members. The more say they have, the better.

"The way they've handled it is a kick in the guts to the fans, the players and the sponsors.

Mr Garrard said he does believe any wrongdoing should receive appropriate punishment.

Ok a source please? How do you know?

Who knows what Gee did with that money before it was repaid. But to just assume it was used to rort the salary cap like everyone claims, is unjustified. It could have been used for anything unrelated to football at all. Maybe he had to pay off a bookie. Who knows ?
What we do know, is that the NRL did an investigation, and found that no players had received extra payments.

THE NRL brought an end to its long-running salary cap investigation into Brisbane yesterday, clearing the Broncos of any wrongdoing, but raising the hackles of rivals by conceding inquiries were hindered by an inability to speak to former club officials and obtain vital documents.

While Gold Coast was hit with a fine and docked competition points and former Titans player Scott Prince lost his role as an NRL ambassador, the decision to exonerate the Broncos only served to highlight the impotence of the NRL?s integrity unit.

It could also prompt changes in the powers of the unit amid claims the NRL had spoken to the AFL about its rules surrounding salary cap investigations.

Any changes will come as cold comfort for the Broncos? rivals, who were seething at the NRL?s inability to get to the bottom of what took place at Brisbane.

Former Broncos general manager of football operations, Andrew Gee, in charge of player recruitment at the time when the alleged irregularities occurred, refused to speak to the NRL.

He is understood to be one of the former officials slapped with an effective lifetime ban by the NRL. The NRL was also unable to get its hands on documents from the Broncos Leagues Club.

From the sounds of things on here, the radio and TV Id say most fans and the club have pretty much given up on 2016

The penalty is harsh but fair.

To be any chance Parra need to get their act together immediately and make some tough decisions ASAP.

Not surprisingly that doesn't look like happening.

But a week of 2 of not playing for points may focus their attention.

big hit!

The selfishness of the f**ked five is going to set Parra back longer.

All of this has happened on their watch. They even blatantly continued with it with their high-priced signings this season.

Parra members and fans really need to take a stand here and pressure or force these guys out if they want a quicker resolution to this and rebuild the club and derive success in a sustainable manner. Essendon should be a case study of governance and how fans supporting the people that have brought the club into disrepute and developing an club vs all mentality can set back progress by years. The specific circumstances at the bombers were different, but the similar theme is governance. progress was delayed there while Hird and the club applied for injunctions and sued and did all they could to ignore the status quo, all with the support of their fans. 4 years later, their team is still on its knees.

Compare it to Cronulla who finally accepted their penalty and moved on. f**k, I can't even remember what their penalty was and which players were rubbed out for a few weeks.

These 5 Parra directors and managers have damaged the club and are selfishly trying to save face while dragging the club through more pain. It won't go away until they go away.

You do realise the NRL made an offer to assist, they are not obligated to do so in any way

Not only that but a Supreme Court could rule that Parra keep their points until a full hearing is heard.

This, and surely it is Parra's responsibility to know what players they can get rid of. The NRL can then step in and help them/make sure the figures are right. The NRL can't be expected to do everything for Parra. Parra got themselves into this mess, it is up to them to get themselves out of it. The NRL want a healthy Parra, but one that is compliant with the salary cap.

just to prolong the agony

That's what the NRL did with Souths remember? Kicked them out completely and look what happened. If there has not been a fair process the NRL could fall on their face and be embarrassed again.

Not only that but a Supreme Court could rule that Parra keep their points until a full hearing is heard.

True but what to do think will happen in the end.

The only way Parra can keep their points at the end of the season is for the courts to rule that the NRL has no right to enforce their rules and that would end the salary cap.

The other unlikely alternative is that the court could rule that all of the evidence the NRL think they have found is invalid.

If Parra put all their eggs in the basket of win court cases, the only trophy you are likely to get is the spoon.

The courts should ultimately accept that sports are entitled to make their own rules.

lol please, just cause this muppet cant understand it doesnt mean the facts we not presented to them

Also a big fat lol at his assertion that current board members had nothing to do with salary cap breaches for this years squad. If they didnt do an audit of the current squad after any sort of handover to check the sums were correct then they are incompetent at their jobs

More than likely they knew and chose to keep quiet, hoping it would all be missed

Except that the NRL won the right to kick Souths out of the comp

I am not sure Souths won in court, I think the NRL eventually gave up and bowed to overwhelming public sentiment.

You may not even get a majority of Parra fans to agree the penalty is unfair.

Many fans have accepted it, it is hard to know the exact numbers, ... but even if 100% of Parra fans started marching in the streets do you think it will make any difference?

They will not get any sympathy from fans of other clubs.

I know the TPA system us unfair, but those are the rules, the correct approach is to try to change the rules, but play by the rules while they are the rules.
