I think he did an excellent job under tough circumstances. Never really understood the criticizm.

Greenburg could hardly be worse than f**king Arko...

Arko was never CEO , but he did have a big hand in running it.

Criticism of arko for his manly bias is fair , but he and quayle ran the game when it was considered the no.1 code in the country.

Late 80's early 90's the game was flying.

It sure looks like amateur hour to set up the RLIC, contract this guy as CEO and bring him across to the New World Order then in short order sack him whilst in the middle of the biggest commercial negotiation of their lives with no successor identified or even considered. Whether he is good for the Game or not (and without a successor identified yet, how would you know how wise this move is?) the way it has been handled is ham fisted, reactionary, poorly planned and woefully executed. How, after this schamozzle, we can have any confidence in the RLIC, or in the judgement, ability and skill of its' members, is beyond me.

what is the RLIC?

Some have been outlined for you.

Brett Stewart
Gold Coast Titans
The last tv rights negotiations
The next expansion

He's handled a number of things very poorly. Not everything, but a number of things, too many things.

It seems likely he was kept in the initial stages of the ARLC to placate news ltd.

In relation to the tv rights they are being handled by a third party.

The ARLC saw gallop for what he was , a NEWS ltd hack.

Typical amateurish response. Do you know a number of CEOs go from team to team. They don't just work for the team they support. The top class CEOs that would be in the conversation like Greenberg are professional. And if they did show bias they wouldn't last long.

The only thing amateurish about my post was my spelling. Going from team to team is one thing, but going from a team to represent the entire code is another.

Whilst Im certain that all mooted club CEO's (not just the one BM mentions) would do a fantastic job, the perception would cripple the game from a fans perspective.

Say the Doggies are over the cap again next year, can you imagine the shitfight that it would cause.

Are we that limited that there is only a pool of club CEO's who can take up this position? Look at Michael Searle for an example of the how the "best ever" club CEO can be next month's bankruptcy candidate.

The media have been caught off guard with this one, and are just plucking names out of the air to make themselves feel better.

Cant remember his name, but the derp on 9 just then said that Gallop was there when the Warriors were brought in.... idiot.

Also said "Gallop left the game in better position then when he got it 10 years ago". Well of course he did, he had a hand in putting the game in the shit 14 years ago.

Excellent point.

The Gallop resignation should have happened 9.5 years ago.

I guess answering to an independent board got too tough for him. Answering to Harto was much easier.

Anyway, exciting times for RL.

Don't worry, Cameron whathisface from the weekend today show said that Manly ended a 4 game losing streak by beating the Dragons on Friday night (despite them having won 4 of their last 5 matches). And he's one of the sports reporters on the station "that does rugby league best".

Could be wrong but I think that was intended to refer to a four game losing streak against Saints at Brookvale.

What's a bet we see a split in how the media will report this.

9 and Fox on Gallop's side

everyone else on Grant's side.

That turkey-necked flea Mike Gibson virtually hammered the game of RL and it's culture just to a paint Gallop as the poor bloke who had to deal with it.

"He had to deal with so much off-field stuff, I really felt sorry for him. He did a wonderful job." Gibbo said rugby league will never be the same without him.lol

That may have been the intent but certainly not what he said.

"NRL Premiers Manly have ended a 4 game losing streak by beating St George Illawarra...."

I agree generally with most of the feeling here.

His conservative, lawyerish approach was well-suited to the early 2000's when we needed a bit of stability and to regain a bit of integrity and trust.

However, once the AFL really started pushing their "world dominance" campaign in the last 5-7 years, we probably needed a more progressive leader to really take us forward. Unfortunately, the leadership structure pre-arlc provided no one that could challenge Gallops role, and as anyone who has power, he was never going to give it up on his own.

Overall, he probably would have suited some sort of high-ranking legal role in the NRL rather than the CEO position. And for heavens sake, lets please hire some new blood, someone will leadership and business acumen. Not some RL dinosaur who has agendas, vendettas and vested interests.

I think it's a massive step up from being CEO of a club to being the head administrator of the game as a whole. It's like taking a bank branch manager and then appointing him the head honcho for the whole organisation.

A completely different level of skill set is required. A professional proven performer is called for. It's a big job, not a chook raffler's gig.
