EXCLUSIVE: Phil Gould warns Dragons not to repeat past mistake in coach search

Phil Gould has warned the Dragons not to repeat a mistake that they've made several times in the past as they take up the search for a new head coach for 2021.

Gould revealed last week that he felt Paul McGregor's axing was inevitable after his eyes were opened to the major flaws of the club's football department during a post-season review last year.

He said the scope of the review did not allow the club to make the changes needed to reverse their fortunes, leading McGregor down a treacherous path that ultimately resulted in his sacking.

Already a long list of candidates have been linked to the job which opens at the end of this season after Dean Young was promoted from within the club on an interim basis to see out the season.

One of the favoured candidates is Craig Fitzgibbon, a champion former player who started his career at the Illawarra Steelers in 1998 and played one season with the St George Illawarra join venture in 1999 before moving on to the Roosters.

Fitzgibbon is widely viewed as the brightest talent in the NRL's assistant coaching ranks, and is currently serving as a protege to Roosters super-coach Trent Robinson.

He has committed to staying with the Roosters for at least one more season after this one, making it highly unlikely he would take the Dragons job, but even if he was available Gould said he wouldn't be the silver bullet some people are making him out to be.

In fact Gould claimed the Dragons had burned talented young coaches twice in recent history, with first Nathan Brown then McGregor set up for failure due to the lack of experience on their support staff.

"You need a team and you can't have a team of rookies," Gould told Wide World of Sports' The Final Whistle.

"I think that's where the Dragons made their mistake years ago with McGregor, and they made the same mistake with Nathan Brown, when Paul McGregor took over everyone was rookies.

"All the staff were rookies. Head coach was a rookie, assistants were rookies, strength and conditioning was a rookie and they made a lot of mistakes over four or five years.

"They changed their mind and kept changing their ways the whole time looking for a solution."

The Brown comparison is an interesting one and Wayne Bennett has always given him plenty of credit for putting together a team that was capable of winning a premiership. Bennett just put the finishing touches on.

Brown was just 30 when he took over from Andrew Farrar as Dragons' head coach in 2003. He took them to within one game of the grand final in 2006 but by April 2008 he was told his time at the club was up.

Bennett took the job in 2009 and led the club to its first premiership as a joint venture the following season.

That hire was the only time the Dragons have brought in an experienced coach in the last two decades and it underlines a belief that Gould has always followed when he's hired a coach.

"It's hard for a club in a position of buying a head coach, and I've only been in this position a couple of times," Gould said.

"I always went for an experienced head coach, someone who had been through it before, and then tried to support them with really good assistant coaches, cause it's the assistant coaches who have a relationship with the players, they're coaching the football."

Fitzgibbon is likely to continue fielding head coaching offers until he takes one and Gould urged him to nail his decision the first time.

He said finding a club that could put the right support in place was vital.

Fitzgibbon the coach to fix Dragons: Joey
Fitzgibbon the coach to fix Dragons: Joey
"Craig Fitzgibbon is if he takes on a head coach role who becomes his Craig Fitzgibbon? Who becomes his assistant coach?" Gould asked

"If you look at the top sides in the competition at the moment, or the ones who are performing well, they've got the best assistant coaches, they've got the best strength and conditioning coaches, that's where you've got to get it right, in your assistants and how you delegate and your strength and conditioning coaches.

"That's the key to success. All these good assistant coaches, when they get into a head coach role, unless they can find someone like themselves to assist them, they find they're doing it all themselves, they spread themselves too thin, they start doing too much and then they get distracted from what they're trying to do."

After the numnuts on NRL 360 , at least Gould brought some sanity to the argument last night. Basically said we were in this trouble due to inexperienced staff ( coaches, conditioners etc ) chopping and changing things all the time ( except promotion of youth i'd add ! ) and wasn't so keen on the Young full time appointment ( but didnt come out and say it ) Also confirmed that they have the money to lure the best like Bennett but don't like wasting it !

We always had the money...all the media talk about not being able to pay out McGregor was speculation...it was about how much they wanted to pay...

Yep organise a swap with Norman. Even if we still have to pay half his contract.
It's funny how many members on here speak about paying half of a player's contract when he is to move on. If an ESL club wants Norman, they can provide him with a new contract at a rate the two parties agree on. If Norman is dropped to reserve-grade with no real prospect of being selected in first-grade; mainly because his replacement is playing well and there are plenty of other options if that replacement becomes unavailable.

In the past, many ESL players who wanted to leave a club mid-contract had a transfer fee placed on his head. So instead of having to pay-out his contract, the ESL club profited by his departure. On other occasions, players have been released from contracts, without any penalty at all.

I'd say a good recruitment/retention/pathways director would be able to have a conversation with a player's manager in which the manager would be glad to gain a release. Remember, the player's value would decrease substantially if his client was left long term in reserve-grade. That's not only a cut in pay next contract for the player but the manager also takes a hit.

Norman is not playing a standard of football commiserate with his salay and so the Club is within its rights to drop him. ESL would be an ideal place for Norman to have a bludge.

Ring Bennett Ryan
Gould’s right on this one.
But make him Head Coach

...Before this Deano longterm bullshit gets traction & starts causing more Fan/Club friction.

It’s a nobrainer that Bennett is our quickest way to a title, despite what some think.

He knows how to win, knows the place, likes our Club, will attract some talent & secure & develop some juniors who’d love a stint under him.

BTW I see Robinson’s blooding an 18yr old?

Jebus Poss. Norman only stated 3 to 4 days ago he WONT be going to England. He hates the cold etc. Obviously rotting in reserve grade at 850k is better than freezing his goolies off at 500k ! Dont think he gives a toss about his future past next season and there will always be a desperate club to pick him up at unders , which would still be 350 to 400k.

Well you are probably correct about Norman and the ESL. However, talk is cheap and managers are convincing when their cut is being reduced.

Robbo is the best coach by a mile, so getting Fitzy would be the closest thing you can get to Robbo. I did not realise how long he has been with Robbo and it has been ages. That to me is pretty impressive and a good apprenticeship as in those years Robbo built his reputation and has won comps and built a top roster. As for Gould's BS I am sure someone like Fitzy will bring in great assistants. He will use the same process that Robbo used to choose his assistants. Fitzy I think he is foxing and would kill for the Saints job. Why, because he lives in the area and why would he wait another year to coach another NRL side if he does not have to. He can start fresh this season and the Dragons roster is not as bad as people say it is.

One thing I really hope Saints learn is no long term contracts past 2 years. Sign Fitzy for 2 with plenty of clauses. If he goes well, extend by a year at the end of the 1st season and every season after that BUT only at the end of the season not after 3-4 wins. That is the lesson Saints need to learn and that is wait till the end of the season when you are guaranteed finals before you resign a coach. That is what Parra do with Brad Arthur. They extended him another season not long ago after he more or less guaranteed finals footy as he only had another year to run now has 2 more years. Smart thinking Parra.

Fully agree

Norman is a lazy shit who doesn’t care less

Sadly I thought he would be a good pick up when he first came

My Parra mate said no way , u will regret him

I would prefer to see him dropped and pay him than see him play and f**k things up

Did some ok things but missed tackles and at least one shocking kick last week

Generally is a passenger most games

Do you think Bellamy or Robbo or Madge would put up with his shit

I know there are issues with Sailors defence but Norman is not much better

At least Sailor brings energy and speed

If you play CC or not at all your market value drops off a cliff and you or your agent looks for greener pastures

At least Hunt seems to try hard for his $

Norman needs to be dropped for a few weeks to give him a kick up the arse

Tell him this is his last chance to perform or look elsewhere

In my opinion we are playing with 12 most of the time he plays

Has anyone seen/heard anything from last night's board meeting about the process to hire a new coach?

You would think the more transparency the higher the calibre of candidates for the position. I'm concerned we will end up with Young being appointed head coach for next season and we repeat history.

Personally I'd like to see Griffin get the gig. He is a good tough coach that will simultaneously bleed youngsters and change the poor attitudes of some of the more experienced members of the squad (Norman, K Sims to name a couple). You can see the talent he brought through at Brisbane and Penrith and this is exactly what we need in my opinion. Of course he also has a 67% win percentage in NRL first grade which is more than what can be said for Young, Fitzgibbon and Wane.

Here is a left field option

Bennett Head coach 2021
Cam Smith assistant and take over down track
I'd say Smith will coach Melbourne. If you want an outsider to assist Bennett, I htin he will pick his own but I doubt the Board would say noto Cooper Cronk.

OK
the real dream team

Bennett head coach
Fitzgibbon defence and Cam Smith attack

I have had similar thoughts myself Mjab - that is having Cameron Smith playing a final season with the Dragons , even go back a few decades and have him installed as a captain/coach.

As much as I dislike his style of play the man is a winner and as such would bring an enormous amount of experience and also be able to instill the ‘ will to win ‘ that the Dragons sorely need .

Of course this is only is the realms of daydreaming , however in saying that there is a slim - very slim chance that he may need to move on at the end of the season if he wishes to continue his career , so why not at the Dragons ?

Hunt shall come good with the right man holding the reins , not saying that he will improve to justify his princely price tag , but sufficiently to own his place in the team .

Unfortunately he is a confidence player who has played under a coach that could not help that part of his game , but as said with the right individual in charge he should become a new man and I believe that he deserves that opportunity .

I suspect a lot of players will come to life with a new coach

Gossip today from a big guy at Foxsports and legend of the game who I see occasionally , not some drunk guy at the pub
His thoughts on Saints if anyone interested

Flanagan leaving Saints end year, doesn’t want job and that’s why he only signed 1year

Fitzgibbon won’t apply job , but would consider it if he was approached and probably take it . He knows Fitzgibbon well and interestingly while saying he is the best assistant and great defensive coach he had concerns re him having the required skill set at this stage and worried he could handle mess at St G

He thinks Green would be the best option if it was him choosing but he has heard Green desperate for the Broncs and likely get it . They are desperate experienced coach and while some segment want Walters , more favour Green

He personally is a fan Bennett , thinks he is a bit too old and past it now ,but likely the best option that we can actually get to move on , if Bennett interested jumping across

When asked about the other old coach options
Griffin
Toovey
Walters etc

Says that these guys are not employed currently for a very very good reason
Knows all of them well and wouldn’t have any of them
Said all 3 a terrible mistake

I thought it was interesting anyway

The cupboard is bare. I don't know Green some say he isn't that good. Then Griffin same story. Toovey no thanks. What else is out there other than Rookies. Benny is getting long in the tooth. Siebold no damages beyond repair. Bellamy will leave Melbourne one day this year maybe next wouldn't surprise. Flanagan he will look for a gig he was a Dragon or rather a Saint Junior maybe his only option. The cupboard isn't looking good. Deano oh my god give him 12 months then bring someone please. Mary really wasn't that bad when you think about it because there is nothing out there YET!!!!
