We can have all the money in the world for 2014, but it's useless unless we have a figurehead coach to attract the players.
If it's just a figurehead we need, perhaps appoint Norm Provan. He's won more comps than any man alive.

Anyway, I'm disappointed we missed out on Bellamy, but it seems we gave it a hell of a shake. Seems he took the safe, soft option to remain in his comfort zone. Did we really want a coach that refuses to challenge himself? ;-)

Will Doust come out now and admit we were the 'other club' negotiating with Bellamy? He hasn't said anything on the topic but surely he will need to address it before too long.

Would love to know what Plan B is....

Old wise fella, there's no joy in paying out on fellow forummers for being optimistic.

But there is some joy to be had when you see a forummer making a goose of himself.

By any chance, did you call bs on the Bellamy rumour up front?

There's a very fine line between beingb optimistic and just plain deluded like possm (and several others around here) were. And yes, i did call bullshit on the Bellamy rumour up front and i didn't think him leaving was ever in doubt, my post history will show that.

Do you honestly believe we actually gave it a shake?? I find it hard to believe that. Sure we threw a lot of money at him but I doubt as to whether he was ever going to leave. And if he was, did we f@&k it up again??

Exactly,it was down to whether he wanted another challenge, whether he was up to it or was just happy to stay in Melbourne.
Our offer must have been a good one and we should give our club credit for trying to sign one of the best coaches ,and giving us a chance for more success.
I just hope we have a plan b.

Why the negative view. Why did he wait so long to announce it,we must have given him plenty to consider.
Just because he will stay doesn't reflect anything at our club, just that he probably felt loyalty was too strong and they would have probably matched the dollars.
I give us credit for giving it a go.The Bennett saga with the Rooters before he joined us is a classic f#*k up by a club, not this.

It's the old "damned if you do, damned if you don't" story.
If the club hadn't approached him there would have been mass hysteria and self-flagellation.
Now they'll just be criticised by all and sundry for having a crack and getting knocked back.

I expressed my reservations yes, but also gave possum qualified support. He needed some, LOL.

Why would he leave smith, cronk and slater to coach Fien, soward and who ever your full back will be guessing beale was never going to happen.

Not only that but storm have another 2 premierships in them next couple years I think while those 3 are.

We want a CEO that can secure the big name! He tried to get Cronk and missed out. He tried to get Bellamy and we missed out. Why are you OK that we again have missed out on securing a big name to the club? All Doust has done is be used as leverage. It happened with Cronk and happened again with Bellamy. I'm of the belief that if you go for your man make sure you get him! Doust should've known early on the piece that News Ltd wouldn't thrown everything and matched whatever offer we made to him. And this is not a "it's good in hindsight comment" - Bellamy was never going to leave Melb!

I'm just disappointed we missed out on a coach that can get us back up the ladder and challenging for the title within 2 years...

Blaming Doust for everything is getting plain old ridiculous, if he was so incompetent how has he ever managed to sign anyone, let alone the greatest ever coach.
And don't use the 5 year contract thing because there's no doubt he would of left early anyway!

So the mistake Doust made was targeting Bellamy in the first place? Strange. But I guess if you don't go for "your man" you cant miss "your man", which maintains a 100% strike rate.

LOL. Yes mate. Bennett would have just packed his bags and left after three. Bennett asked for five and Doust said "No, I'll give you three".

If you only ever go for the man you are sure you are going to get, you're signings will be very limited indeed..
You can't force someone to sign. FFS sake, we even signed a certain pea-hearted player last year who then backed out of a supposedly done-deal...
