Not so, the Newtown Jets were crowded by Souths, St George and Canterbury and has a very small junior competition based mainly on high school football. South Sydney Juniors and St George overpowered Newtown's ability to develop.

On the other hand St George were a powerhouse and with the correct management, would have continued to be so. If the merger with Illawarra did not happen, St George could easily have gone the same way as South Sydney and privatised. We were then and still are the most recognised name in Rugby League.
Name one current St George administrator that you believe could capitalise on the most recognised name in rugby league, and make St George a powerhouse again.

I understand what you are saying SD82.

It was expected that Illawarra would provide the juniors and Saints would provide the money/administration.

This was the theory. Let’s look at it in practice.

Of the current 17 players in the FG squad:

Dufty St George
Leilua St George
Host St George
Robson North Coast
Lomax Temora
Lawrie Illawarra
Sims Illawarra (failed to blood him)
Sims Illawarra (failed to blood him)

Have I missed anyone?

Irrespective of where the juniors are coming from the Illawarra side is managing the pathways process with the assistance of Millward and McGenius.

The results are available for all to see.

Hence it really doesn’t matter where the juniors come from as they have very little chance of ever playing meaningful first grade minutes.

So you see Illawarra hasn’t really provided anything at all unfortunately.

We have the smell of Newtown about us.

Let’s hope something changes soon because the NRL/Newscorp puppets are waiting for the opportunity to slot us.

I can't believe people still refer to Brian Smith with anything but disdain.
I know him personally and his approach of high intensity generally tears teams apart as he is not a good man manager and treats players out of favour very poorly.
Playing rosters quickly disintegrate wherever he coaches and while he does get results in the short term, he leaves teams in a far poorer state than when he found them.

At the time of St George's greatest crisis with a year still to run on his contract and with the Dragons needing stability and organisational fortitude to avoid relocation and a forced merger, he reneged on his contract and went to the media with that "stench of death" remark.

I place that traitor Reddy alongside him after he was given the coaching role and jumped ship to superleague. Never to be forgiven!

We don't have anyone. All has been taken over by Illawarra old boys.

It is time to bring in Gould and have a clean out replacing these bums with highly professional management.

So where have all the great St George administrators gone? The ones that were promised to take the poorly managed Illawarra Steelers to great new heights?

There were many NRL mangers, coaches and players who leap frogged to Super League at the time; including Mundine. Years later we were told to forgive and forget.

I have no issue with bringing in Gould, however, his appointment would have to be approved by the very people he would be "cleaning out".
Does anyone truly believe they would employee someone just to sack them? I dont think so!

Exactly right.
Bringing in Gould is a nice thought but why would the Board slit their own throats?
The only way something like that could happen is if WIN started haemorrhaging cash.

I don’t know if I’d describe Balmoral (or as the locals say “Bal-morale”) as a beach in the true sense of the word.

As for Moet imbibing, I used to undertake such churlish behaviour while frequenting many of the CBD’s questionable bars in what could be loosely called my heyday.

Hindsight and life experiences are wonderful teachers.

Sounds like a good fit, hope the other spot goes to Charlie Runciman. Play him in the centres till Lomax is back then as a back row interchange who can very adequately cover most backline positions so Mary won't pick a an outside back in the bench

St George Illawarra have announced Melbourne Storm front-rower Patrick Kaufusi will join the Dragons for the remainder of the season.

The Tongan international and former Queensland Under-20s representative has played 25 NRL games to date across stints with North Queensland and Melbourne.

Kaufusi played 22 games for the Cowboys in 2015-17 before a season-ending foot injury derailed his final season at the club, where he played the first nine rounds. He joined the Storm in 2018 where he featured three times.

"Patrick is a welcomed addition to our roster for 2019, he's a quality person from a tremendous squad and system," Dragons Director of Rugby League Pathways and List Management Ian Millward said.

"He's a player capable of playing in the middle and back row, who is keen and willing to play first grade.

"With the current spate of injuries in the team, it's a really good opportunity for Patrick and the Dragons to see what impact he can bring to the club and playing squad. From there, we can consider our options with him for the 2020 season."

A positional equivalent to Jack de Belin as a middle forward, Kaufusi fits the NRL's criteria for salary cap dispensation and will fill the Dragons' 30th roster spot as required before June 30.

"You don't replace a player of Jack de Belin's calibre with ease, particularly midway through the season," Millward said.

"This entire process and circumstance has been extremely complex. It is complicated by not only the rules and regulations but also by the existing injury toll across the competition. This means clubs are unwilling to release players, as the representative period is back in full swing too.

"There has also been no clarity over salary cap dispensation for 2020 or when a determination of Jack's matters will be reached, which makes it very difficult to both accurately plan as a club and offer prospective players any certainty beyond 2019 – particularly with 23 players already under contract for next year.

"It has been a lengthy process to get to this point but we are pleased we have been able to come to this arrangement with Patrick and the Melbourne Storm."

The current NRL development player squad will also become available for first grade selection post-June 30. The Dragons' 2019 development players are Eddie Blacker, Jackson Ford, Hayden Lomax, Joe Lovodua, Steven Marsters and Jason Saab.

Kaufusi will arrive for St George Illawarra Dragons training this weekend.

Along with yourself, I have never forgotten Smith’s “smells like Newtown” remark but I don’t agree with your statement that he reneged on his coaching contract. If you recall at the time of the so called merger with (the now defunct Eastern Suburbs), it was Phil Gould who was promised the helm of an hybrid side.

Two into one doesn’t go.

Defunct?

The Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club are the reigning NRL premiers, and one of the only teams to have actually played every season of 1st grade rugby league..

Dear Einstein,

Do you see a team called Eastern Suburbs currently participating in the NRL competition? If you do, I’d suggest getting off the “Yamba Bamba”.

New name, new team.

It’s not rocket science, numbnuts.

The reining premiers are known as the Sydney Roosters.

You can delay your MENSA application for the time being.
