Oh come on Red... Turn it up. Carney and Dugan would make us a premiership threat. Currently we are not.
Therefore it's a smart decision to sign them if possible.

i would rather make a play for Reynolds from the bulldogs before Carney.
Reynolds has the intensity and steps up in the big matches. he also has a bit of mongrel in him which Carney lacks..
from memory he still hasnt signed with the dogs for 2014 - still in negotiations. they are going to offer him 350k a season for 4 years which is the most they can afford under the cap.. i believe he is going to be a star and if we can grab him for 400k a season under the increased salary cap it would be a more astute buy than Carney.

](*,) What I mean is... Most people have been happy to have Beale at full back, despite his injury problems. He's had 2 knee recons, one on each knee, and has injured his knee again. Yet, people are saying that dugan shouldn't be signed, because he's injury prone. I don't see their logic there. I didn't hear people complain about injury problems before we signed beale. I could be wrong, but that's just the impression I'm getting.

i think its more to do with the cost as well as injury..
Beale is half the cost of Dugan so it doesnt impact your salary cap as much compared to if you have a player on 700k a season sitting on the bench and you havent got the ablility to invest in depth in the squad to cover him..

on a side note Dane gagai is also off contract end of the season. he is getting paid hardly anything at the Knights, there is an opportunity there to sign him if we are smart.. Knights have salary cap issues and might not be able to offer him a suitable upgraded contract..

Who's buying a team.We need a half option and a back option, and every player is injury prone, look at Beale now.We are back to the problem we had last year at fullback and our juniors options are another season away so signing Dugan would add plenty to our team.

All I am saying is that we have been linked with NUMEROUS players covering various positions and I for one don't want the club to look at heaps of expensive signings when we have talent coming along within the club. The next topic of conversation on these forums will be questioning why the Dragons are letting go promising juniors due to them having no prospect of playing 1st grade etc. One or two signings is okay, but I would hate there to be wholesale changes to our squad, which incidentally I think is not as bad as some here are saying.

oh...

well if it makes you feel better, I think we shouldn't sign Dugan. Not because he is injury prone, but because he is a massive twat

I don't think anyone was taking cold showers with the news we had signed Beale. He hardly set the world on fire at Brisbane.

Let's face it, we needed a full back & who else was available.

I would have thought that his dickey knees proved the point that players with a history of injury concerns are always a risk. You seem to be saying let's just throw caution to the wind & sign another risky player because we have done it before.

The difference is as it's been pointed out, Dugan will cost twice as much & seems to be mentally unstable.

I would think a half is more the priority anyway

Josh Dugan and Todd Carney combo has Dragons fans shuddering

JOSH Dugan and Todd Carney to the Dragons? On big money? Let's get the par-tay started right now.
News that the former Canberra bad boys are firmly in the Dragons’ sights must surely send a shudder down the spines of every supporter of the Red V.

At the very least it highlights precisely where the proud club finds itself positioned in the player market, desperate for any big-name player who becomes available.

Let’s make it clear now that coach Steve Price is not driving negotiations, although he could be the one who ultimately must live with any decision to contract the heavily tattooed duo.

Signing Carney is one thing and understandable, but are the Dragons prepared to splash out the $750,000 a season his management is believed to be asking NRL clubs?

Dugan is another proposition altogether, given his ugly departure from the Raiders merely a month ago.

It is understood the Dragons only renewed their interest in the wayward fullback after Sunday’s bold win over the Knights when
Gerard Beale suffered a season-ending knee injury.

It would be dangerous to even contemplate what is going on in Dugan’s head right now, but he has some deep psychological issues to grapple with at worst.

The NRL will not divulge what they are, but this journalist was told days ago that it would be wrong to describe them as "mental issues". So what are they?

At best, Dugan showed at the Raiders that he has little truck with authority, and isn’t smart or savvy enough to deal with something as basic as social media and the cowards who roam it.

The Dragons are a side - and club - of relative cleanskins, hardened by the discipline instilled under Wayne Bennett during his three years at the helm.

So is Dugan the type of individual it should now let into its system? A bloke who didn’t turn up to a recovery session and got on the pineapple Cruisers on a roof with Blake Ferguson because of something as trivial as not liking David Furner?

Some might suggest, and many believe, the issue with Dugan is that sometimes he wants to play to the potential of his abundant ability, but at other times could not be arsed.

If the Dragons do sign him, he might try to find some space on his forearm to tattoo the following commandments to himself:

1. Have a crack.

2. Don’t undermine the coach.

3. Don’t let down my new teammates.

4. Don’t get any more tattoos.

As for Carney, he has reminded all of us in one-and-a-bit seasons what he is capable of. He showed in his absence against Parramatta what he means to the Sharks.

The whisper at Kogarah on Sunday was the Dragons were in the box-seat to sign him, with Jamie Soward unlikely to be wanted beyond this season.

It is an enormous decision for Carney.

The Sharks provided a lifeline when no other club was prepared to take the risk after the Roosters punted him due to a string of alcohol-related misdemeanours in 2011.

Cronulla captain Paul Gallen told Triple M’s NRL coverage on Sunday that must surely count for something.

"I think it does," he said. "I don’t know Toddy real well, but he’s a loyal guy. I stuck my neck out for him, and so did Flanno (coach Shane Flanagan) and the club. So he would want to repay us in some way."

Carney might owe the Sharks, but the ASADA probe into the club clouds everything.

It would be negligent of the Dragons not to pursue him, even if they might have to pay through the nose with Price unsigned.

But Dugan looms as some of sort of bad boy Trojan horse, who is not worth the risk right now.

Canberra showed something about their club when they sacked him. The Dragons will show something about theirs if they sign him.

Most ridiculous article I've ever read, takes over last weeks spat at Soward!

Dugan has mental problems? The kid messed up and got fired for it. That was silly, but it doesnt give him mental problems. Then he had a shot at some twerp over twitter who bagged out his family...geez, when Benji Marshall king hit a guy at Maccas noone said he had mental problems! Robert Lui belted his Mrs TWICE and noone is complaining in the media about the Cowboys stooping to new lows in signing him. Dugan is a kid...the Dragons culture of 'relative cleanskins' will give him what he needs in the NRL, something that Canberra clearly dont give their players.

Other examples of clubs stooping to signing former bad boys:
Nate Myles
Greg Bird
Michael Jennings
Wes Naiqama
Willie Mason
Sandor Earl
Dane Tilse
Albert Kelly
Reni Maitua
And I'm sure there are others.
Makes you wonder, why is Dugan any worse?

Somebody bags out my family I would get angry also.

There are many reasons a player does not want to play for a particular team/coach.

Gorden Tallis for example. Did they at the time say that he had mental problems?

A large majority of youth in sydney anyway, have tattoos, binge drink on the weekend, and generally cause chaos in the CBD come the weekend. Do they all have mental problems too?

I wouldn't mind seeing him playing for the dragons.

But if he were to be lost to the NRL that wouldnt be good.

Agreed those other incidents are far worse especially attacking women. Another case and this happened on the field that I can never forget for the thuggery and cowardice is Ian Roberts bashing Gary Jack, one he is half his size and two he was held by a team mate defenseless. That was the one most disgusting dog act I've seen.

Billy Slater did the same to Nightingale when he was being held back
