Eels' inquiry into alleged attempt to fix election

Yes Suity, unfortunately self-interest is sadly often a driver in representative roles. We see it often in Politics, Boards or companies and organisations, large and small sporting clubs, even school P&C associations.

My faith was not surrendered as easily, but even so I'm still disappointed in how low these guys allegedly stooped. Though I for one don't think it is comparable to anything displayed by the incumbent board that came before them (pre-2008), even if their inaction on certain matters could perhaps at a stretch also be perceived as self-interest?

It's all really sad actually. I hope the same think doesn't happen to your Wanderers... you've got one of the former participants in this recent Eels mess as one of the four Wanderers co-owners now, haven't you?

If you are talking about Glen Duncan, then yes, the Wanderers do. But Duncan is a smart operator. He walked away from the shit at Parra, withdrew his sponsorship, and instead threw his money at the stadium, in which he get's far more bang for his buck, 12 months of the year.
I have far more faith in him doing what a board member should do, for the Wanderers, than anything I've seen from anyone at Parra in a decade.

Probably helps that he doesn't have a coach that he knows who wants a job.....

That's the only thing he did wrong at our club, otherwise you are correct, he stated they were amateurs and got the f**k out of there.

Fair call.

Fair call, for the Wanderer's sake I hope he doesn't have any mates in the football world looking for a job!
The sort of businessman that SHOULD be on the Eels board. Sadly, we f**ked that chance.

I don't know that "we" f**ked anything? More the morons that were on our Board at the same time as Duncan f**ked that opportunity (given that he walked) - and they (allegedly) f**ked the more recent opportunity we had to get another savvy businessman in Moss on the Board as well? There's been some rather unseemly times at our club in the past six or so years, that's for sure.

When I said "we", that's what I meant. We, as in Parramatta.

Ah, fair enough. Since I personally never considered the mob the majority voted in for those years as representing me or forming a "we", I tend to get easily confused.

I've never met him or seen him play footy but given his actions at our club (including f**king off) I'd say he probably is.

I never trusted Spags from the start and accordingly was accused as being pro-Fitzy. Of course that was never the case.

Won't say I told use so - OK f**k it I will.

I gave some 3P merkins my footy club votes in that infamous first election

but someone had quietly mentioned spags as a dodgy one to me so I didn't give him a vote

I wonder what this was all about in 2009. Wasn't there some thing with him not being a member and then he blamed Fitzy refusing his membership ? His name seems to crop up a lot.

IT WAS with a weary sense of deja vu that Parramatta legend Terry Leabeater handed his licence to police on Saturday after passing a random breath test, to be told it had long been cancelled and he would be charged with driving without a licence.

Leabeater, who is standing on Ray Price's 3P ticket for election to the board of the Parramatta Leagues Club this month, faces Picton Court on May 26 - when he will argue for the umpteenth time, he says, that he is still being penalised for falling victim to ID theft more than a decade ago.
"It's an ongoing thing that happened years ago and it keeps coming back," a rueful Leabeater told Sport Confidential yesterday. "I had identity theft in the 1990s and I thought it was all cleared up, but the state debt recovery keep putting it back on.
"I had a car stolen with a briefcase in it - it's haunted me for years and I thought it was all over but obviously not. Even at Westpac in Terrigal they call me Dead Man Walking, because apparently I'm dead."
Leabeater maintains that he has tried on numerous occasions to have records across myriad government departments corrected, but is adamant he will be able yet again to prove he is in the right. He says: "I've had to do it before in court - one judge didn't want to listen so I appealed (that decision) and won that . . . have you tried dealing with three government departments? It's not fault of the police - they can only go by what comes up on the screen."

Spagnolo... the gift that (allegedly) keeps on giving.

Investigation into Parramatta Leagues Club former chairman takes a step forward

Date September 25, 2014 - 6:37PM
Chris Barrett Sports Writer

A state government investigation into allegations of membership tampering and other irregularities at Parramatta Leagues Club has taken a significant step, with the industry regulator referring findings to the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority.

Former Eels chairman Roy Spagnolo and ex-chief executive Bob Bentley have been linked to the backdating of 186 memberships in the weeks before last year's Parramatta elections, a ploy investigators believe was designed to bolster numbers when members cast their votes for directors.
The development on Thursday leaves the matter, which is also being probed by police, in the hands of ILGA, which will now determine whether action is to be taken against individuals involved in the scandal.

The Eels released a statement, saying: "The Parramatta Leagues Club (PLC) Group has today been informed by the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing that a disciplinary complaint regarding the club has been lodged with the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority.

"In November 2013 the current PLC board referred a number of matters to the OLGR following a wide-ranging review into the previous administration. In May 2014 the tampering of PLC membership records prior to the PLC election in 2013 were discovered, and this additional matter was also referred to OLGR in June 2014 for their review.
"PLC has co-operated fully and extensively with the OLGR throughout the investigation process and looks forward to its completion. We await further advice from the authority and will continue to keep members informed of developments."

The Eels last week asked Spagnolo to stand down as chairman of the football club, the Parramatta District Rugby League, while investigations were ongoing, but he said he was "not going anywhere".

A spokesman for the liquor and gaming watchdog said on Thursday: "The authority confirms it has received a complaint from OLGR. Once the complaint is determined, the authority's decision will be published on its website."

Parramatta are also investigating allegations of harassment and bullying of officials and staff during the previous administration, they announced last week.

The off-field inquiry comes as the Eels prepare to send players to the US for an off-season tour during which they will visit NFL champions Seattle Seahawks.

Just received an email from the Club re the investigation by the OLGR. There are 5 people facing show cause notices. Will be interesting when these people are named.
