21 years ! Since the 2003 Ashes series !
yeh its been a ridiculously long time between drinks. If they cant hype that series up and get 30k+ crowds then we should just give up on Int RL! I reckon there'll be a lot of Aussies in Uk and on tours who will go to this series.

Need another good victory at the weekend for England then they can start talking themselves up and getting the fans over there excited for next year.
Having the England coach saying we couldn't beat Australia with game 1 performance is not exactly what we need to be hearing out of the England camp!

I saw that comment and I thought good on him, he must be a tough demanding nut, you`re gonna need that.
Good to start talking the Aussies up as well, so that everyone knows who the next target is once this series is out of the way. Get the hype started early.

Good to remind them that they can’t settle, or rest on their laurels.
Keep improving guys!

By all means tell the players that behind closed doors, but in public talk up England's chances of finally breaking the hoodo! We want fans spending money in the belief we can win!

Prob another benefit of england hosting next year, rather than Aus. I think the hype and crowds will be bigger over there, which should rebuild some of the hype of the ashes series before hosting them in Aus.

And do some decent bloody promotion! I’m talking quality, not quantity. lets have a point of difference between club and international. Just little things like having the teams walk out next to each other with a slow powerful instrumental…instead of who let the dogs out, or a 90s electronic track like fire starter.

Let advertise the history of the ashes, and previous winners. This way we won’t have the majority of people think it’s a new concept or that RL is copying cricket.

i love they are looking at bigger stadiums and playing in London! That’s huge!

add prestige, make it an event!

They have to earn it though. A one off win of a series won't have enough of an effect.

They need to play better football.
If they win over there it`ll have enough of an effect to make them (the Poms) marketable down here next time they visit, and presently that`s all I care about.
In ideal world for me the teams would be close enough that home crowd advantage and conditions gives both sides the edge, bit like the cricket, but with upsets thrown in.
That way we could see on-going Test-series between the nations that pull big crowds in both the northern and southern hemisphere.
A competitive Ashes series is an untapped goldmine financially and game credibility wise as we look to cement our number one status around Oz.

I don’t buy all this shit about the competitiveness stuff. I’m not saying it has no impact but I don’t believe that is why interest in the international game has languished in Australia. It has much more to do with how seriously the tournaments are treated and marketed and also how often they’re played. It’s the same reason something like the bledisloe is seen as a legitimate competition despite Australia basically getting dusted for 20 + years straight.

The first problem is we don’t play England enough. Unless I’m reading the stats wrong since 1990 we’ve played England just 14 times the last game was in 2017. Only like 5 of those games were in Australia as well. How can you expect to build a rivalry when you never f**king play each other?

We also don’t have any tournaments or tours with any sort of history or weight to them. Something like the ashes, six nations, bledisloe etc. If you want to build interest in your international game that’s how you do it, have a regular tournament that can develop a bit of history or rivalry.

In terms of results I think that’s over blown anyway. I know they haven’t beaten Australia in 30 years but there have been a lot of really competitive games in that time. The last time they faced England lost to Australia 6-0 in a World Cup GF an extremely tight contest. How did we follow up that success? By waiting another 8 years to have the teams face again.

The truth is most people wouldn’t have a f**king clue how competitive England and Australia is outside of how the media and people involved in RL portray it. There has never been a concerted effort to push international league as something serious and so that’s how the fans treat it.

Completely agree.

USA Basketball team and historically the All Blacks (until more recently) have utterly dominated the landscape of their sports but it hasn't stunted growth of those games internationally.

It's about image (marketing), consistency (regular tournaments and a calendar so people know what's on) and history (build up a history of these tours / tournaments / rivalries and make sure there is a new edition of it scheduled in the future at all times.

Exactly on that last part. I know people who will plan their next trip around things like when the next ashes tournament is (in cricket). Good luck doing things like that with league, even the f**king World Cup could change on a whim.
