Favourite surprise albums

what is everyones favourite album which they have bought on a whim? not your favourite artists which you actively seek out albums for, i mean those gems that appealed to you for one reason or another in a record store. you may have heard of them and took a punt on the album based on one song, the concept of the album may have jumped out at you, it might have been a couple of bucks in the bottom of a discount dump bin, but once you got it home it just blew away your expectations and became a favourite.

Personally, I love True Love which is a collection of Toots and the maytals hits collaborated on by some more main stream artists, the soundtrack to Tsotsi has some excellent afrikaan rythms and introduced me to an artist called Zola, and finally an album called Mermaid Avenue which is a collection of woody guthrie songs performed by billy bragg & wilco. I'm sure there is more, but these are the ones that spring to mind at the moment.

I bought Dark New Day's "Twelve Years Silence" the other day.

Now, I'd never even heard of them before. But I was pleasantly surprised.

It could be considered a "supergroup", consisting of:

Brett Hestla (formerly from Virgos Merlot)
Troy McLawhorn (formerly of Doubledrive)
Clint Lowery (formerly of Sevendust)
Corey Lowery (formerly of Stereomud, Stuck Mojo)
Will Hunt (formerly of Skrape).

Surprisingly, they were pretty decent.

I can't remember how I got into Mogwai, I think I just bought a CD on spec one day. It was Young Team and quite noisy and impressive. Have got everything they've done ever since.

They released a between-albums single a while back when they toured Oz that I bought on spec too. Ended up being a 20 minute track called My Father My King, with two live songs around ten minutes each - not bad value for $10.

A long time ago now but I bought Jane's Addictions Ritual de lo habitual having only heard Been Caught Stealing and knowing nothing else about the band.

It soon became obvious it was one of the greatest albums ever made and I've loved the band since.

More recently?

I'd say The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails, I know it's mainstream but I've never been into Industrial music and had written them off until a mate burnt me a copy but now I'd rate it in my top 10 favourite albums.

Paul Weller - days of speed . An acoustic live album covering a lot of his stuff old and new. It got panned but I love it.

Scissor sisters is a bit too camp for my liking.
Have you listened to that album?

If you haven't ....as Molly used to say.
Do yourself a favour.

It is a great Friday night (having a couple of warm up beers) album.

There is no way on Earth I would've even listened to it unless I heard it by chance.
It is very catchy.

Take Your Mama Out is brilliant. Return to Oz is quality too.

I'm like carcharias - I neverb would have listened to it by choice but my girlfriend bought it and it's a superb album.

anberlin - never take freindship personal. dont usually listen to that pop punk emo crap but the missus got it and theres something about it that just kicks ass. singers voice is so bloody strong its hard to hate.

terror - one with the underdogs, went into red eye and grabbed the album despiite not being into hardcore and my god what an album. tuff guy hardcore at its best even tho i'm not that into that scene.

a single that has suprised me is the new fall out boy track. something so listenable about that single. love it. catchy as f**k
