Great thread mate, keep them coming

not sure if serious....if not though (which i strongly suspect), what is the issue? too much thought and depth to my suggestions, too much to read and consider, huh?
i generally provide constructive, considered points to go with my posts....more than i can say for some, so think what you like

Can some of you people not remember the last truly golden era of Rugby League through the late 80's and most of the 90's when crowds were up and the league was scattered with brilliant players...?? because in those days, swapping players around in different positions to get the balance of the team right was always done - and the players (and coaches) were not so robotic and rigid and structured back then...

So my suggestion about switching Ben Roberts around comes of the back of that type of thinking and past successes in RL with such positional switches. Are you seriously telling me you aren't aware of; or don't remember of the days when players of the calibre of Laurie Daley, Brad Fittler and even Brett Kenny were swapped into the centres from 5/8 - and sometimes to lock??? Brett Kenny finished his days at Lock because he had lost some etc, but could still help the team by playing in a different position!!??

I'm not just talking at SOO level either. Although Daley and Fittler did swap around a lot in SOO, they also did so at club level as well for the benefit of the overall team structure....so if it was good enough for players of their calibre, it is sure as hell good enough for Benny Freakin' Roberts ok!!!! Especially if: (a) he is not performing on a consistent basis at 5/8 - which he is not, and (b) if there is someone better suited to taking control of the team (along with Sandow) in the halves - namely Jarryd Hayne

So Ben Roberts is of the calibre of Kenny, Daley or Fitler?

the point was move Roberts to a position where he doesn't need to be a chief playmaker...utilise his strengths, his running game and his solid defence. i also suggested Lock might be another option for Roberts. He will not be a our long-term 5/8 anyway.....the silly jibes at me that some keep coming up with are rather pointless

I aree with you. He`s the best five-eight we`ve had for a few years now, but still not quite what we need, I don`t think. In terms of being a 'link' man or 'play-maker', he`s a bit of a one trick pony I reckon: run wide and throw a cut-out pass to the winger. That`s okay, but his real strengths - as you pointed out - are his running game and his tackling. Good long kicking game, too. Now, where do you put a player like that? I think centre would make it difficult for him because he would have to do a lot of defence and would not get the ball anywher near as often as he does now. Lock? Maybe. Fullback? Maybe - but we`ve got Jarryd (and please don`t anyone tell me that Hayne is a five-eight; please).
So I think the only two positions for Roberts at Parramatta are five-eight or lock. But if we put him at lock and leave Hayne at fullback, who do we have at five-eight? Answer: nobody.
I guess what I`m trying to say is that, while in essence I agree with your sentiments, I personally think it`s best if we leave Roberts at 6 for the present. (And I don`t think Maitua is a viable option for six, either.)

I agree with Burt coming back but at the expense of who?
Hayne needs to stay where he is I think, we won more games last year with him at fullback than we did at five eighth and in recent weeks is looking devastating whilst unfit due to the playmakers.
Roberts to centre....no. I wouldn't want to waste him there, but it's nonetheless a decent suggestion considering how weak we are in the centers. Would he do well though? I don't think so.

If anything, we need a defensively strong centre to come in, which is why missing Smith and Loko is so hurtful for us. I think we need Horo in our back row, but if Matt Ryan continues on from his debut then maybe Horo will return there? I think he did relatively well there last season given the circumstances.
Whilst Burty is my favourite Eel I don't see any justification to drop Blair or Sio.
