Stuart gives Finch his backing
July 16, 2006
SYDNEY Roosters coach Ricky Stuart is adamant Brett Finch has a future at the club despite the former NSW Origin half being dumped to the bench amid rumours he was being shopped around to rival NRL teams.
Finch received only 18 minutes of game time after being pushed back to the interchange bench to make way for Craig Wing at hooker in today's 38-32 win over Cronulla at Aussie Stadium.
With Wing one of the Roosters best as the Bondi Junction club finally brought an end to a six match losing streak, Finch only entered the fray midway through the second half before being dragged again with eight minutes remaining.
Stuart said Finch's benching was just part of the game plan and not linked to the speculation he was not wanted at the club, quashing rumours the Roosters had given his manager Steve Gillis permission to negotiate with rival clubs.
"It hasn't come from anyone within the club, that's why it's very difficult on the boy," Stuart said after the match.
"There's a lot of speculation, there's a lot of comment out there in regards to Brett, in regards the team, in regards to the club itself and I'm over putting out fires.
"For a 24-year-old boy who's playing rugby league because he absolutely loves it, he's going through a difficult period ... I don't think it's fair for a 24-year-old kid to cop so much public criticism for something he's trying to do his best at.
"I really feel for the kid."
As for his chances of regaining a starting berth, Stuart was noncommittal. But given the performance of Wing and rookie halfback Josh Lewis today, Finch's best chance of more game time could be in Premier League with the Newtown Jets after he failed to impose himself in his limited opportunity today.
"It's very, very hard for a bloke that's normally a starter, it's very hard to come on and find the pattern of the game," Stuart said.
"There are specialist positions, you can be a specialist bench player, you can be a specialist starter and it was a tough call for him to go on and try and find his game in the heat of the battle."
"He did the job that I needed, he gave Wing a ten minute break and I then let Craig go again."
