That's stating the obvious mate.

Of course you can't replace Andrew Johns overnight.

But it would be nice to think the club could spend the Andrew Johns salary ( alot of cash ) on some good buys.

Now Buderus salary too?

Thats combining Johns and Buderus - almost a million bloody dollars salary cap we can spend on at least attemtping to replace them with top line players.

Look, if Knights fans are happy with mediocrity, thats fine.

I don't think its wrong as a fully paid member of the Knights, to put forward my view as to how the Knights recruiting is going. I'm not just sitting there from afar and whinging. I pay my tickets every year, year in year out. So does my entire family.

I have a right to question what is going on for that very reason.

Everyone sees us as being Top 4 next year.

No f*cking way in the world.

Who do you think we should have went and got Karma?

I'm ok with most of our signings, especially De Gois.

Constantine Mika could be anything.

Out of last year the only ones I really werent keen on were Lulia and Ciraldo.

Naiqama was a very fine winger before injury but I don't think he's a center.

Wicks and Houston are young and have loads of potential.

Cross is up in the air, I felt he was overated last year and we should have went for Civo because we were in the race for him, atleast I was led to beleive.

Out of the year I only would have targeted Ennis, but as I said im very happy with De Gois. There wasnt much quality on the market for next year really.

Karma, you dont think that those very bloated salaries go along way to causing the clubs current financial problems. Spending massive on players has gotten the club into financial trouble and recruiting lower cost troops is a way to reign that back in.

I dont agree on the club going out and spending massive amounts on 1-2 players again mate, that is exactly the thinking that buggered up our seasons since '01. With so much of our dough going to Joey and Bedsy there was little left to pay quality players so we had crap around them, evidenced with the results of the games where either or both were out.

We are playing far better footy this year than last year and even if we finish 3rd last instead of 2nd it wont be due to the sh*tty attitude and lack of heart that got us near the bottom of the table last year, it will be due to the comp being closer. We wont finish the year with a F/A of -250+ thats for sure.

There's been a sh*tload of big name players come off contract last year and again this year for 2009. I don't have the entire list.

Something better than what we ended up with. Something, anything!

I'd love to know how many potential recruits wouldn't even consider Newcastle's contract approach or negotiations simply because who we have as coach.

karma, there has been nothing good on the market in positions we are weak in except for the odd centre... but even then they haven't been top tier contracts or anything. and aside from that, we had to spend johns' and buderus' money on building a balanced team, rather than relying on single individuals. if we were to just use that money to replace them with another single player that we can't do without and kept our team of nuffies we would have been back where we started, and not moving forward at all.

we have replaced our pathetically weak roster last year with an overall quite strong roster that (as evidence this year proves) can adapt without star players - even without a lot of star players. you demand unrealistic and... pretty much impossible things from the club and from the coaching staff. you're having a whinge for the sake of a whinge.

I am in a bit of a foul mood today.

I just got the sh*ts when I was looking at the NRL ladder and saw we are only 26 points better off F/A, and on the same competition points as the Eels

I'm calm now.

I actually think we can peel off 5 wins in a row over the next 5 rounds, but the Eels game worries me - more than the Storm game.

I really do think we can win 5 though. That would almost give us 8th.

Paying big dollars for superstars when we have so many holes to fill just in our club players would be down right irressponsible management mate. Once the fringe players we do have are playing consistent footy then it will be time to go hunting for a rep player, to do so any sooner would be lunacy.

Because I'm not counting out the " Do It For Danny " attitude.

Buderus will play out of his skin for the rest of the year.

And Gidley is playing in another universe.

Stranger sh*t has happened this year. Like Rabbitohs winning 5 games.

I think we can. I really do.

It doesn't make me feel better about our recruiting policy, but hey, let's just start with winning the first game against the Rabbits!

Btw Karma, here are the players that teams gained for the 2008 season http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/showpost.php?p=3935830&postcount=990 Go through there and tell me who you would have taken over our bunch of Hilder, Naiqama, Cross, Houston, Wicks, Fa'aoso, Ciraldo and Lulia. There may be a few but consider price of them which would affect our depth and all.

I'd take ( in no order of preference ), Asthon Sims, Karl Filiga ( McNichol in that list ), either Brent Tate or Ben Harris for 1 centre, and Petero Civoneciva from that list.

I think Sims is much better than Wicks. Filiga could have been our starting centre this year and I'd prefer Petero than Cross.

That is just from a quick look through the GAINS only ( only players who changed clubs ) and taking into consideration realistic salaries that we could afford. Bear in mind we took on Mad Dog instead of going after a Ben Harris or Brent Tate with any serious attempt.

Obviously the list would be 100 players long if I considered the re-signings.

This year, there was alot of options too.

But the team is full of nuffies right? Nuffies don't win 5 games out of 7, let alone 5 in a row

Cooper Vuna
Akuila Uate
Chris Bailey
Jarrod Mullen
Dan Tolar
Matt White
Cameron Ciraldo
Chris Houston
Cory Paterson
Zeb Taia

Danny Wicks

agree on all, except I seem to be the only person in the world that doesn't rate Ben Harris.

Tate and Petero would have transformed our team. whether we could have afforded them however, who knows.

I think something a lot of people aren't taking into account is that we are losing a lot of depth for next year.

Royal, White, Bailey, Taufua, Mad Dog likely wont be here, as well as bedsy. unless we are signing some un named superstar, there is a lot of money being saved, and none being spent. I refuse to believe upgrades have eaten all the money we are saving, particularly looking at some other rosters (and rumoured salaries) in the NRL.

Im with Karma on this one, I think we are going backwards for 2009 - but probably not for the reasons he thinks. I think some players will improve (im looking for big things from Wes, Houso, and a few of the NYC kids) but we are just losing too much depth - particuarly in the forwards. A few injuries and we will be playing backrowers in the front row, backrowers in the centres, hell, probably backrowers in the halves again....

Ok, Sims, he has been maybe worse than Houston if you take in work load and errors and penalties.

Filiga who? The kid who is on upto 250k a season?

Tate and Petero would have been nice but on much more money than what we did get. Harris was a bit of an unknown.

Either way my point is we did alright IMO and not as bad as you are probably making out.

I'd like to think Chris Houston will definitely improve. He started the year like a house on fire ( no pun intended  ), but seems to have gone downhill since.

I'm not convinced about Wes Naiqama, far from it. He can look totally disinterested sometimes, like he doesn't want to be there. I'd like to see a bit more effort and commitment out of Wes, because he does have some ability.

As for the NYC kids. Well they will HAVE to step up! Because apart from Isaac De Gois, I haven't heard of any other signing apart from a potential signing in Arana Taumata from the Bulldogs.

So essentially as you say Macca, we will be relying on the same squad of players as this year minus some key depth forwards - and hoping like hell the players improve during the offseason while every other NRL team doesn't improve

Unlikely.
