It is pretty hard to quantify that last sentence however it is a matter of principle for the NRL. If NSWs star fullback and captain Kurt Gidley signed with AFL I would have no hesitation in not picking him.
Yeah, neither would I...

I understand all points of view, but personally I'd rather lose the Origin then for them to have picked that traitorous scumbag, and I've never thought anything would be above winning the Origin.

Just my opinion of course.
I'm glad I'm not the only one.

El that's too far, snaps both legs? Talk about dramatic!

Big deal! You could read or hear "BP" one hundred times tomorrow, and it won't change you're perception about BP - which is based on fact - BP are polluting the environment.

Same with AFL. They can say "AFL-convert" all they like, but most NRL supporters will only hate AFL the more, and AFL fans will either shrug their shoulders or be angry that the game's administrators forked out so much money for someone who doesn't know how to play.

In my book, this sham of a marketing ploy will back-fire on the AFL BIG TIME ... in the long term. Be patient ...

You have a point, which would apply to most supporters, but the young ones....probably another story altogether don't you think.

And from memory, Falou was one of the favourites in the all-stars game....a selection process driven by the youth.

The concern is, there are many other players who have busted a gut for rugby league, and would bust a gut for Queensland, wondering, how much loyalty are they being shown?

They are the ones in all of this, that I believe are not being represented.

All I know is, in my job, like many, once I say that I am resigning, I am told to pack my stuff up (even though I have given 2 weeks notice). I dont even need to be going to a competitor. I have shown that I am no longer interested in working or performing for the company, so why would they keep me on? More than likely, there are other people in the company, that have ambitions, and will represent the company better. If anything, I am likely to make more people consider the benefits of leaving, the longer I stay around & therefore, be a bad influence.

Selecting Izzy - I have no issue whatsoever.

Fans forget that football is our entertainment. To the players it is a job. Its a better job than a lot but still a job.

Brett Kenny was a stellar player - one of the all time greatest players to strap up a bootlace. After he retired he got a cushy media job. Then he lost it. Had to start over as a builders labourer for James Hardie nailing ply wood.

I have no issues with players wanting more money. Clubs forget about great players when they reach useby. Just ask Paul Vautin, Petero Civonicva, Arthur Beetson, and many many more.

For those lucky few who get into media post playing, which only wants them if they pull ratings, and will can former player commentators quicker than Tiger Woods asking a waitress for a phone number.

Israel has a chance to earn ridiculous money which if sensible with it means noone in his immeadiate family or his children (when he has them) will have major financial concerns again.

I do not blame him for taking the money. Not all players are going to be the next Jarrad McCracken.

Should he have been selected? Well who really selects origin teams for the future in a live series. Maybe ina dead rubber. But never in a live series. You select the best team that is available.

In the normal world you have to work out notice. If the employer asks you to jobs you're required to do them or you're in breach of employment. Israel could not say no to playing. Queensland had every right to select him - he meets the criteria and there is a job to be done. Queensland is just being a rational employer.

Lets play Q & A with counter view:

Q What's the big deal?
A He's leaving to a competitor.
Q Are you worried he'll take trade secrets with him?
A No
Q You're worried he'll take fans and thus revenue from the game in the future?
A Yes
Q So essentially that is revenue he would have helped to generate in league?
A Yes
Q So he's taking his own value from NRL and putting into AFL?
A Yes
Q And he should not do this because?
A He is a slave to the NRL. NRL makes the players. The players do not make the game. NRL should be able to chew them up and spit them out when they get injured and retired.
Q Are the AFL paying him a price that reflects Israel's value to the game?
A Probably more
Q So he's actually taking from the AFL's wallet and making them poorer and less competitive?
A Yes
Q By not selecting him for Origin what good would be achieved?
A He would have a lower profile thus take less revenue from NRl when he leaves.
Q Would not the controversy of dropping an established player who has scored amazing tries actually add to his profile?
A Stuff your logical questions. He should be punished. He's leaving us. He's rejecting us. He is not being loyal.
Q So Israel is behvaing the same way as when clubs dump older, injured, or found better replacement players?
A Yeah exactly.
Q So Israel is doing to the NRL what the NRL does to players?
A Yeah. Players should realise their slaves and we own them till life do us part.
Q So what if they have goals and dreams of achievments outside league or better financial opportunities?
A Once they play in the NRL they are ours for life. If they leave we will hate them the way dumped divorced people hate their former spouse. When giving notice they will leave but have not actually left we will punish them and make them play in reserve grade comps. Even when they come back we will never forgive them but always remind them that they left us. They rejected us. They made us hurt. We will never forgive nor forget. Those money grubbing......
Q Why do you work for?
A I need to
Q Why do you need to work?
A I need money to live
Q What does more money give you?
A More opportunities to a better lifestyle

Punishing people for exercising legitimate free will, chasing dreams, and changing careers for more money. Ridiculous.
Never realised how many NRL fans would be better off in North Korea. Commies!

I actually feel stupider after reading that.

I dont want him punished for exercising free will, I want him punished for actively promoting a rival code that is shamelessly seeking to undermine RL in its heartland by poaching one of its stars as a publicity stunt.

All's fair in a free market economy mate, doesnt mean we cant have principles.

after several people came out and said they wouldnt pick him and would support him being picked
no credibility and no integrity

I really don't think people realise the impact this will have.
If Folau was banned, it's taking a stand...and to change the stance shows vulnerability.

I want him punished for actively promoting a rival code...

What promotion has he done for the AFL? All he has done is sign a contract and confirm that he has signed a contract.

He is not an AFL employee yet. He has not done any promotion work for them yet.

He may in the future have intent to promote AFL but he has not yet done the act and joined AFL. All he has done is a sign a contract. You can crystal ball gaze and tell me he will perform it? The only time you punish someone for intent with no action is attempt and conspiracy. There has been no attempt to promote a rival code as we know of yet thus the rubicon has not yet been crossed- and publicly telling your employer you're leaving is no conspiracy! Maybe if he signed surreptitiously and tried to take players with him from Qld league team I could understand your point. But he has not.

A stand against what? People leaving for double pay? Are you serious?
"Oh I won't leave for 3.6 million - I might get dropped from rep games THIS YEAR - oh wait - I'm leaving for three years, so really its just 4 years of rep games I miss for 3.6 million".

If those rep games were really that important he would have stayed in league. The only stand you would be taking is cutting off your nose to spite your face. He's currently vicariously an NRL employee on the payroll - and you're making him work. By letting him leave early - you're not taking a stand - you're showing weakness by giving a paid holiday.

voltron said:

Yeah that would be a breach of contract and your current employer could cancel the contract thus terminating employment and may even seek damages. What promotion for the AFL has Israel done thus far? None. You make no point.

voltron said:

Because you're leaving? Rational employers take staff who are departing on conferences and get as much good work out of them as they can until they leave. You have to pay them anyway - if they're prepared to work out the term let them

voltron said:

Never changed your mind before?

voltron said:

Never regretted an emotional decision in the heat of the moment that you later changed when logic took hold?
voltron said:

You're seriously not comparing this to changing striking laws one hour before Hayne appears at the judiciary. That is the definition of no credibility or integrity. Changing the rules to save one key player is arbitrary and capricious. But thats the way NSW always have been.

For the people that say Origin is a privilege. So is club selection! There are no rights to selection for the players. If they get picked they have to play unless injured or they are in breach of their contract. All Qrl has done is make him do more work before leaving.

You make origin sound like a gift. Its not. Its an opportunity to do higher profile work with a bonus pay. Like desirable overtime you are contractually forced to accept unless you're over 30. Just because the players enjoy it does not mean its not work.

What does that have to do with RL?
If he wants to leave for double pay, fine, they don't have to play him in rep games...they owe him nothing.
I don't know about yours, but if I quit my job my boss isn't about to send me to the free promo dinner representing his company.

Exactly, so why should Queensland pick him?

Why not? If you leave would he not want to leave the door open for you to return at a later date or are you a bad employee that he is glad to be rid of?

Exactly, so why should Queensland pick him?

Because he is the best man for the job. He is still on the pay roll and willing to work. He's not leaving for another four months.

The only stand you would be taking by not selecting him is cutting off your nose to spite your face. He's currently vicariously an NRL employee on the payroll - and you're making him work. By letting him leave early - you're not taking a stand - you're showing weakness by giving a paid holiday.

If I was a betting man I'd be putting money on 2-1/2 years and Izzy will be knocking on league's door.

Well given the kind way the Broncs and the Qrl are treating him it improves the odds he may choose to knock on the NRL door and not Rugby Union if he were to fail in AFL.

Very rational move by the Qrl and Broncs in my view. Better to have players feel as though they will be welcomed back by treating them kindly before they leave than make them feel ostracized and punished thus not wanting to return and to be lost to league forever.

Everyone is going round and round in circles.

He should not have been picked, but now that he has, he has to play out the series (I agree with Blocker).

If you cannot see why he should not be picked, don't bother about rebutting my argument, this is as polarising an issue as they come.

When Hannant is making mega metres for the Broncs in the comming years you may even in hindsight agree with me on that one too :p.

I do not expect too many to agree with me on Lewis ;-)

From an earlier post.

"...this presently contracted NRL player…

Took part in a AFL media stunt held for no other purpose than to gain publicity for the AFL and its new franchise, and at which he openly spoke in favour of AFL entering the western Sydney market and encouraged the community to take up the game.

Folau also gave valuable media photo/video opportunities with AFL officials, and allowed himself to be photographed by the media/AFL on an AFL ground with AFL posts in the background.

The only redeemable thing he did was decline to be photographed/filmed holding an AFL shirt.

Folau did all of this while still a contracted NRL player."

But aside from this, just taking part in this cross code circus is promoting the AFL and for this reason I believe he should not be picked for SOO.

Get it yet??
