well there's a shock. news ltd making up stories

wheres Dangermouse?

I have nothing left to say. As I've pointed out I am defending News Ltd only against accusations they have an agenda against their own product.

You keep singling them out and believing this ludicrous conspiracy theory. Also keep ignoring all the negative coverage League gets in every other media outlet including this forum.

Broncos close ranks over sex attack claims

10:00 AEST Mon Sep 15 2008

Brisbane Broncos have closed ranks following reports that police are investigating three of the NRL club's players over an alleged sexual assault at a Brisbane nightclub on the weekend.

The gathered media at team training in Brisbane have been told that players won't be commenting on the issue ahead of Saturday's second semi-final against Melbourne Storm at Suncorp Stadium.

Forward Ben Hannant will talk to the media shortly but the club says he won't be commenting on the drama.

The Broncos may release a statement later today but only if they are contacted by police over the matter.

Meanwhile premiership betting is in turmoil over the reports.

Bookmakers across the country have suspended grand final betting and all betting involving the Broncos until police complete their investigations after a woman lodged a complaint on Saturday night.

Police, who set up a crime scene at the Brisbane inner-city nightclub on Saturday and seized security vision, are continuing their investigations which could go on for a few days.

Lasseters betting manager Gerard Daffy said with all the rumours floating around all premiership betting would be suspended until investigations were completed.

"If the Broncos were to lose any players at all, particularly key players, their hopes go out the gate," he told AAP.

"If that happened, Melbourne Storm would become flavour of the month again."

Daffy said punters would only be left with the Warriors-Roosters game to bet on this weekend.

"It's quite feasible until this gets sorted, and who knows how long it will take, the only option punters will have this weekend is the game between the Warriors and the Roosters," he said.

The club has taken a hard line against players in the past who have broken the code of behaviour, sacking four players for drink-related offences.

It's understood a group of players, celebrating the club's tough finals win over the Roosters in Sydney on Friday night, were kicked out of at least one Brisbane hotel earlier on in the day.

Sounds like they are trying to hush it up. Good one for f**king up the betting as well.

Seriously, why would you get piss f**ked during the finals, that's what you do after you win the GF or it's Mad Monday.

Our NRL players would struggle to survive with cavemen.

Don't know if I'm a fan of closing ranks. That's great for for those that are being investigated, the other 22 blokes in the squad all get treated by the media as suspects in the mean time.

Last night I thought we had a real shot at knocking over the Storm, right now unless this is something that brings the player group together ala the Bulldogs in 2004 I'd give us buckleys of beating them now.

I love that you and El Diablo are here in this thread reading about what's happened. Of course you have no interest in what happened or anything. I have no doubt your curiosity level is 0. Makes you question why a newspaper would print this kind of thing though. Who do they think would be interested in such things. John Hartigan should have stepped in before this story was published and pressured the journo's not to report on it. People could buy the papers this week during the investigation looking for news about this whole scandal. But the DT and CM would just have nothing about it.

Settle...

If you don't work for News I'm not here.

You don't know what my views are on the subject other than their rugby league coverage is woeful.

But given you have raced to the defence of News on every single occasion the topic has been raised since you sauntered in here, your objectivity is at best doubtful...

They're not closing ranks. They just have no comment to make to the media about it. They haven't been contacted by the police so what are they supposed to say? The club is doing all they can do.

That's extremely pessimistic to say they are buckley's chance of beating Melbourne. This whole thing could blow over by this afternoon. We've already been told they weren't kicked out of the story bridge so there's one inaccuracy already. I remember last year K and Hodges were questioned by police just because they witnessed an assault in a cab. No one knows anything yet. I wouldn't be panicking.

This thread makes me sick.
And it isn't to do with the story it's to do with the f**king deadsh*ts in here yet again resenting and even blaming a woman for having a night out.

It really is a sad day in 2008 when a story like this appears and people go 'Women should really learn not to put themselves in that situation'.
Like are you f**king kidding me,looks as though there's just as many cavemen off the field as well as on it.

On topic,I will reserve my judgment until I hear more, disappointing to say the least if true.

I agree with you on that Shorty, however there is a flip side to that as well.

Any men found guilty of sexual assault on women and children are low f**k wits that should have their nuts cut off and then hung.

But I have spent a bit of time with some NRL players and some of the women and their actions towards NRL players or any sporting celebrity that I have seen has been nothing short of disgusting.
So some people I think may be painting this particular women with the same brush.
The criticism of this woman or women who have been in similar situations over the years on this forum has been unwarranted and a little bit sickening.
For starters no one should be passing judgment until all evidence is made public and secondly, no one deserves to be tarred with the same brush because a very small minority have made a bad name for themselves but targeting NRL players for their sexual conquests.

i was brutally assaulted & raped in a restroom at a pub 8 years ago.

it was the most awkward situation when i took her to court a couple of weeks later.

but fortunately the civil union went off without a glitch.

In England they're trying to pass legislation that if a girl gets plastered and ends up in the pants of a stranger and decides to scream rape she can't claim jack sh*t.

That is nonsense.

Going out for a couple of drinks does not give men carte blanche to rape you in a toilet. Any of you idiots who believe that should visit a psychologist or some other mental health specialist.

How about we wait and see what comes out of the police investigation before we start our normal round of blame the woman.

These are great these threads.

1. Scandalous allegations break.
2. Usual suspects post to the effect that this is a News beat-up; an outrage against NRL players who are gods on earth; an indictmen of women who sdeserve to be raped.
3. Simultaneous with 2, the second colelction of usual suspects demand players to be stood down, charged, electrocuted before any sort of objective investigation process (or even sworn statement by a victim) is available.
4. NRL clubs smother and go into spin overdrive. Usually commences with an over-the-top denial followed by quick back-pedalling. Ultimate punishment usually goes to the player not as a result of the allegation but for making the club spokesman look foolish in making the denial.
5. No one, not players, clubs, posters, media outlets or readers, learn anything and ...
6. Endless repeat of cycle.

Hahaha brilliant.

I'd also add in:

- 6 months later player in trouble gets feel good piece written in paper about how they've matured and learnt from their mistakes (maybe even a Tim Sheriden piece if they are selected in origin)

- Clubs expect that their talks with players will result in some kind of improvement in behavior. The dangers associated with having a large group of young egoistical men (being pursued by s**tty girls) going out and getting hammered together on a regular basis will be negated by "lessons learned."

Full statement from Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen:

"I wish to update everyone on the Broncos’ position in regard to the allegations made against three players following an incident on Saturday.

"I am the only person officially authorised to speak about this from a Broncos’ perspective.

"That being the case, it is very difficult to answer all the individual calls coming into Broncos’headquarters and impossible to agree to all the individual requests for comment. Having said that, there is little I can comment on at this point in time.

"As soon as the Broncos were made aware of the allegations, an internal investigation team was formed. While the club has not been contacted by the police about this matter, the main focus of the internal investigation team is to co-operate fully with the Queensland Police and collectively ensure all the relevant facts are recorded.

"I have spoken to NRL CEO David Gallop today and have assured him that we will keep him abreast of things at all times.

"I will also keep the media advised, but will not be making general statements until I am sure of my facts. At this point in time there are conflicting stories, some misrepresentation of the facts in the media, and generally wide and varied views in the public arena. I can understand
that but will not engage in speculation – only in the facts.

"I can confirm the players are also co-operating fully with the police and have presented themselves for interview this afternoon.

"As soon as I am sure the information I have is credible and the position is clear with regard to the investigation outcomes, I will make myself available for interview."
