That’s not going to happen for the simple fact that Souths don’t want to play in the east at Moore Park. Their own research has told them that the majority of their fans live *west* of Homebush. From the point of view of distance, public transport and parking it’d be a much worse situation than what they have today even with no change.
We’ve got to play the politics of the situation for the best outcome possible for Rugby League, not necessarily the most sensible outcome for the state. The politics is dictating that what really matters to voters is the immediate construction costs and how that balances against schools and hospitals. Long term considerations like maintenance, strategic placement etc have become almost irrelevant as the debate has sharpened onto just the big dollar figure.
So with that in mind, perhaps we as a game can “win” this debate for Rugby League by saying...
“Look, this whole thing started at $2.4b+ to rebuild both Allianz and ANZ. The government have scaled it back to $1.8b to rebuild Allianz ($700m) and refit ANZ ($1.1). But because our fans are battlers and tax payers, and we want to help NSW put even more into schools and hospitals, Rugby League is willing to sacrifice even more.
“We’ll settle for just a Parra style 32,000 seat ground at Alliance for around $400m and just a new small boutique ground at Homebush for around $350m (in reality just another Parra clone). And we won’t spend anything on the barely 18 year old ANZ. Look! Another $1b for schools and hospitals! Isn’t Rugby League great?”
It’s a shell game of course, but no one ever said politics has to produce outcomes that make sense. Just outcomes that satisfy self interest.
