why the heck would the gws giants play at anz stadium anyway? they don't need a stadium with that capacity. that stadium that they play at in sydney olympic park (sydney showground stadium) is big enough for them. that's where the west sydney thunder 20/20 cricket team play too

Have you been to Campbeltown it's a lot better than some of the other suburban grounds, next to a station and easy to get to. Or do you think the nrl games in Sydney should be exclusively played out of anz and the sfs?

and for those who haven't been there, campbelltown stadium is actually next to leumeah station, not campbelltown station. leumeah station is 1 station north of campbelltown station

The longterm aspirations of the AFL would surely have GWS, which they would have you believe represents 4/5 of NSW and Canberra, playing in front of bigger crowds than that provided by the Showground.

Showground will likely get an expansion with the thunder playing there now.

BBL will expand and will easily be the main tenant.

In a way the AFL were big losers of the ANZ stadium decision , not really because it was likely GWS were ever going to need ANZ but more from a perception standpoint.

They were the ones who originally lobbied the NSW govt back in the 90's to make it an oval shape , in fact they paid $1m (ridiculous unders) in order to insure it happened.

The swans have retreated from their western journeys , once getting crowds of 70k at ANZ to eventually having to abandon the stadium due to lack of support in western Sydney.

Their plans have clearly failed.

And as pointed out on offsiders the chairman of the SCG trust is also the boss at GWS.

The NSW state govts of the past have been won over by AFL manipulation , thankfully this govt wasn't.

he is talking about the west of the SYDNEY area

and he is right. parra is around the centre of the sydney area. blacktown, penrith, the liverpool/badgerys creek area, campbelltown are the areas that are western sydney. the city is not central sydney

Im just making the point that his notion of "West" is purely arbitrary based on nothing and created entirely on promoting his own interests...

He wants a $300million stadium built for his team alone in the furthers reaches of Sydney's West because thats "real western Sydney". Despite the fact that there are far better locations already and even more with future potential, he want a stadium in Penrith for no better reason that "its in the west".

The best idea for this 4th Sydney stadium (given it wont even be discussed for another decade) would be to wait until after the plans for the Badgery Creek airport are finished then find the best location for the transport options associated (this will never be Penrith).

All I can say is that if the AFL had had that perspective on Sydney and not taken two bloody AFL sides up here I'd have been extremely happy as a rugby league fan.

The fact is Perth is growing at faster rate than any other city and will surpass Brisbane soon. A lot of that growth is due to migration from the Eastern states too, so if we want to win this war that's where we must go next if we have even the tiniest notion of what strategy is.

The prediction for Perth to have a bigger population than Brisbane by 2029 is a bit of a furphy. The statistic doesn't count the Logan area to the South of Brisbane, the Moreton Bay area to the North and Ipswich to the West. All have residents who attend games in the CBD. Perth has no such heavily populated areas adjacent to the city. Saying this I still believe the NRL should have a Perth based team.

Finally had a chance to catch up on all the stadium news from last week. It looks like an amazing result for Sydney and about time too. The biggest city in Australia needs some great stadiums and this delivers that.

much better than Lilyfield Park. I've only been there recently for Sydney FC pre season games, and frankly, can't believe that a billion $$$ league schedules game there. Heritage and nostalgia is one thing, and you're right on top of the action, but that's all Lilyfield provides.

I know they need to entertain the Balmain side of the merger, but frankly, there is more growth for the Tigers in playing matches at Leumeah than in the inner-city.

A split between Olympic Park and the Campbelltown area should be the future focus now.

Rubbish. The predictions count all of Brisbane Metropolitain Area which includes all the mentioned NOT just the City of Brisbane municipal council of which Perth Metro is twice the size of. Either you are mistaken or obfuscating the fact.

Perth Metro may very well overtake Brisbane Metro but will never match or overtake the population of the South East Queensland region which Brisbane is the core of.

Have a look at a map of Sydney. Penrith is bang in the middle of where all the development is going. Has rail and road access in and out so it's certainly a good spot for it. Though I can't see it happening without other tennants

So in the end the clubs did not cave into government pressure.

The NRL and ARU and Soccer worked together to get the main stadium a major upgrade. The NSW Blues, Australian Kangaroos, Australian Socceroos, Australian Wallabies and Canterbury Bulldogs all benefit, along with the part-timers, Wests, St.George.

Souths are a corious one, Moore park is literally in South Sydney, but they decided to go to Homebush, thier choice, I guess that comes down to money. For mine they should play at Moore Park, but that is thier business. Either ground they get an upgrade.

The Roosters, Waratahs and Sydney FC all get an upgrade, not what they wanted, but still an upgrade.
Parramatta and WSW get a new stadium to share, with both having a choice to play at suitable games at Homebush.

The Roosters, Waratahs and Sydney FC all get an upgrade, not what they wanted, but still an upgrade.

Manly and Penrith get to keep thier home grounds, Manly even gets a 20 million upgrade.

Cronulla owns it's ground and can slowly upgrade as they become profitable, due to the development, next door.

So what happens to Kogarah, Leichhardt and Campbelltown? Part time already, thier council will not have the money for upgrades and NSW money is all spent.

I expect the saints to play some games at WIN, to staisfy the Illawarra side of the venture.

The Broncos have a world class stadium for League, Union and soccer.

The storm have a very suitable new stadium.

Gold Coast, they just need a club house to cash in better, and a new rental arrangement, the ground itself is suitable.

Have not been to Newcastle for over 10 years, same with Canberra, but they look ok on TV.

The Cowboys are the ones who need an upgrade.

The losers Victorian Football.

Happy Days

North-west and South-west growth areas have direct rail links to Parramatta and the City
