The stands at Penrith date back to the 60’s and 70’s. You can’t build on the Southern end due to sewer issues and there is no room at the Northern end. How do you upgrade the ground to modern standards with 25-30k capacity without rebuilding it on a new site? An ‘upgrade’ would leave it barely better than it is now and would still need rebuilding in a few years.
When they rebuilt Parramatta most people don’t realise that the cost of $350m doesn’t include the almost $100m to relocate and rebuild Parramatta pool in a community aquatic centre. The claim that it would cost more than Commbank to build on the Paceway site doesn’t recognise this.

There is a tract of land north of Penrith leagues, why not use that for a new stadium instead?

After reading Weidlers article, upgrading the existing site at Penrith is a commonsense move. I am sure every fan in Sydney would want a home ground similar to CommBank. But that venue has more than one tenant.

And lately you hear about the potential demise of Leichhardt Oval as an NRL venue. And in the past we have seen Redfern Oval and Belmore fall by the wayside.

So in the end, Penrith may not get the Commbank stadium treatment, but you will still have a home. And if Penrith wants to improve crowd averages, take a couple of games a year to Accor.

It isn't about a home ground for me, The Paceway is going at some stage - Wasted chance when it happens and the Ground has had a minor touch up

can’t see them doing anything other than a total rebuild

with the stormwater issues they can do a 3 sided ground like the cowboys which will help reduce the cost

The Paceway is the preferred site, Infrastructure NSW has already determined this. Any other suitable site would cost a lot more than acquiring the Paceway site.
a three sided stadium isnt possible because both ends can’t be extended for stands - the south because of the sewer issue and the north as it is restricted by a road.

None I can think of. Most of the land out here has gone to developers or has been aquired for the Airport

Penrith is the middle of that Western City District, They also have a Fulltime tennant for the ground. Campbelltown does too but being at the Southern End makes the trip from the Hawkesbury no better than to Sydney or Parramatta.

So it makes sense to have something out here, How it became it was just for NRL and the Panthers. Is why there is the current issue but it why even if it is an indoor arena. Something will be built out here

There was some issue with the other side that made it impossible to build on, whilist keeping the Road open.

Having been through this here I can categorically say it ends up with a poor second hand result. Instead of committing to a new rectangular stadium next to Optus as they should have the WA Govt has been throwing good money after bad on NIB for over a decade. $170million in and the stadium is still no where close to being of commbank quality and in reality needs at least another $150mill to get it there. And now they've spent so much there's no going back so we will never get the stadium we should have at Burswood.

Spending $50-100mill on these grounds will not make them fit for purpose for now let alone for the next 20 plus years.

Wasnt it just last week Abdo was saying how NRL woudl be pushing for Penrith to be built and that he was confident it would happen?

zoned commerical, Fighting Westfields in court to put a Shopping Centre there. Traffic getting in and out would be an issue with a Stadium there, So I can't see zoning being changed

Panthers own it so wouldn't be an issue to get it, Just not possible as that part of Penrith is already bad traffic wise.
Westfields is only 5000 car spots so to get 25k in and out would be horrible and as such it is still empty. Being upgraded to try and clear traffic without a Stadium

Without improvement to cater for this growth, future traffic congestion at these intersections will worsen, resulting in further delays for road users

The $100m for the Paceway comes from what Meriton offered them (Which was approved) but fell through because 2300 apartments with the flow on traffic would of been a mess and is off the table as a result. Zoned as Recreation I am not sure they get anywhere near that

Manly not financially stacking up either. Certainly sounds in this detailed timeline article the Govt is very committed to Penrith happening.
