I don’t buy onto the afl is serious threat bs. They’ll never be a serious threat to rl in qlnd, new stadium or no new stadium.

this funding was supposed to be to deliver the best Olympic Games possible, and leave some legacy behind. At least the Gabba plan did that both for stadia and the development around it which would have been great for tourism.

improving Suncorp is a very different issue and nothing to do with the olympics. It’s only been chucked in as vote winner by a govt on the rocks facing an election, and at the expanse of the Olympics which is a great shame. Good for rl, shame for the Olympics.
Queenslanders are so scared of AFL, they would rather have relatively shit Olympics than a new stadium just because AFL can also use it. As if AFL is ever taking over from RL anywhere north of Canberra. Totally irrational thinking.

Talk about walking into a point you don’t want contend with.

Pray do tell what legacy would a 55k stadium leave that would be used by a (relatively) unpopular sport and would never be filled? Before you go on about concerts or events the capacity would not take events away from Sydney or Melbourne either. So what is the legacy of a stadium that is essentially going to be either dormant or half filled; particularly if you leave the more popular or heavily patronised stadium unfunded?

It seems like a really stupid legacy
It leaves brisbane with an oval stadium that matches the best in the country. Now you might not like the sports that are played there but that’s your bias. As is it will leave both Suncorp and Gabba with a bit of upgrade work that will still leave them far from World class large stadia standard and that’s it. That’s not a great legacy for $3billion, imo.
And to top it off the actual world stage event that the funding was actually made available for will be played it out a sub standard venue That’s costing a Mint and will have little use at all afterwards.

And be honest, it is all being done for politics and to try and stay in power, not what’s best for the Olympics or brisbane.

that was bs, fact was brisbane didnt have a suitable Olympic stadium sitting there ready to go so they were always going to have build something.
So the IOC and the qld government are liars? That stadium was going to be a 1B gabba and a new indoor arena which has also been rejected for a cheaper/better option.

And if it was BS then the people of qld have been dudded and it would be better if we cancel the games even with the 500M price tag.

I’m not a Queenslander. I’m sick of fumbleball having the better facilities. It is a massive advantage that they have

I doubt thats true, the merits of a perth team still hold up and I am still firmly for them getting a team.

It's just the constant whingeing about everything else that reduces the weight of his opionions for me.
Perth Red exaggerates the benefits of Adelaide and Perth while talking down every other bid. He tells lies to spin a narrative that is favourable to his position.

Perth is definitely a contender for one of the next three licences, but it's not a lock-in. If it does get a licence then it'll be battling against the Eagles and Dockers in a parochial fumbleball city. I predict it will be no bigger than the Titans. The difference is rugby league is king on the Gold Coast with a strong nursery of players. A Perth-based team will always be a poor man's Melbourne scaping for the crumbs that are left behind by the Storm, Broncos, Dolphins, Titans and Cowboys. Throw in a second New Zealand team and Perth will really struggle to recruit quality juniors. Part of me hopes Perth gets a licence so I can criticise all of its failures as they stack up. After all the whinging and death riding about the Dolphins and everything else by Dane and PR it'll be thoroughly deserved.

Yep it’s irrational justification. Afl is doing many things right and growing well in new markets but it’s light years from rl in nsw and qlnd and will never overtake it, just as rl will never overtake afl in its states.

The Gabba is literally fine. I should know as I’ve been there. It is not the best oval ground in Australia but it doesn’t have to be - it will still get an annual test match. Lions also don’t need anything bigger.

Brisbane doesn’t need an oval ground that matches the best in the country.

What is not 'world class' (a pointless non descript saying) about the gabba and suncorp? And how will they be not up to standard after a billion in upgrades that you don't even know what they will entail?

The gabba is only just smaller than a hodge podge scg, less than 20 years old and suncorp is the proclaimed best rugby league stadium in the world.
All before getting a billion in upgrades.

A 55k oval in Brisbane would be a white elephant. Brisbane is never going to host the final of an ICC World Cup. Nor is it going to host the Boxing Day Test or New Years Test.

At 55k it would still be behind MCG, Perth Stadium and only slightly ahead of Adelaide Oval. The only time it would sell out is during an Ashes Test. Cricket and fumbleball matches don't have 50k active fans in Brisbane screaming for a new stadium.

Why do you want Brisbane to have an oval that'll be bigger than Lang Park?

An enlarged Lang Park with a capacity of 65-70k will generate more sell out events than a 55k oval that holds 11 AwFuL games and a Test match that pulls 15k on a good day.

I cannot think of any event outside of the Ashes that would go close to selling out a 55k oval. Maybe a preliminary final for the Lions?

I’ve no skin in the game so as a neutral it looks a pretty sht outcome for $3billion. A small athletics stadium and patching up two old stadiums. And Olympics with a sub standard main venue that’ll embarrass australia. It’s not great.

if the $500mill adds 10-15k seats to Suncorp then that’s great for RL, soccer and union.
Can you just f**k off?

No one wants to hear your endless negativity about everything that isn't Perth.

Government statement.

Interesting part about QSAC & it’s legacy.
Suncorp Stadium and QSAC are the two most highly used venues in Queensland, with QSAC hosting nearly 782,000 visits in 2022-23. More than 527,000 visits were community sporting groups and schools, with another 167,000 visits from training and aspiring athletes. This compares to community visits of less than 20,000 at the Gabba, and around 4,000 athlete visits. Any upgrades to QSAC will further broaden community access.

Investment at QSAC would also provide the opportunity to explore expanded transport links servicing not only the stadium but also Griffith University, the health precinct at QEII hospital, and the growing communities on the southside of Brisbane to provide additional legacy benefits.

Regarding Victoria park & the Gabba from same report:
The Review panel recommended a brand new multi-billion dollar stadium at Victoria Park. However, as the reviewers noted, significantly more work is required to understand the opportunity and before these preliminary findings can be relied upon.

The Government does not believe it would be possible to deliver any new stadium at Victoria Park within the existing agreed funding, and the IOC has noted that a new stadium for the Olympic and Paralympic Games sits outside the “new norm” of using existing or already planned venues.

The Government is therefore ruling out a stadium at Victoria Park, instead favouring investigating upgrades to QSAC and Suncorp.

The previously proposed re-build of the Gabba will not proceed, instead replaced with a more modest enhancement of the existing facility in consultation with AFL, Cricket Australia, and other stakeholders. Those sports will no longer be displaced from the Gabba, and East Brisbane State School will not need to vacate its current site by the end of 2025. However future works to the Gabba are expected to impact the school, and the government will work closely with the school community as those plans develop.

None of that matters because an independent review surely couldn't be biased and would only provide the best outcome, except when it didn't.

And also perth red and a bunch of victorians wont get a 'world class' olympic (sic, afl) stadium which makes brisbane look bad apparently. So that justifies spending 4 billion dollars on it.

Why does the athletics stadium HAVE to be the centrepiece of the Olympics anyway? Suncorp will have events from opening to closing ceremony you’d imagine, plus it can be involved in non-stadium events like long distance running/walks, road cycling event could start or finish at Caxton street etc.

For the one week of track & field a revamped QSAC will be fine, it won’t look like it was built in the 80s like it does now.

Brisbane will be the trial run for some of these things and they haven’t made any bones about doing in differently to past Olympics. You can bet if they can make the rectangular main venue with a modest athletics stadium system work then other cities will take notice going forward, because y’know for most of the world rectangular stadiums are their main stadiums already.

You’re moving into tin foil hat territory lol
Except he has a point. When Quirk was Brisbane's Lord Mayor he rezoned much of its land for development. Chinese developers made a lot of money.

I live in Rochedale South, which is part of Logan. Just next door is the suburb of Rochedale, which part of Brisbane. It was beautiful farmland until Quirk sold it to Chinese developers.

It's no surprise he wanted to turn Victoria Park into a stadium. It's one of the few green spaces left in inner Brisbane.

Please.

They decided to push the most expensive option forward after essentially being awarded the games on the basis that they wouldn’t need to build any new stadium. All for a 55k stadium that would be used how often exactly and by whom? It fails every ROI test you’d imagine.
If the 55k Victoria Park development went ahead then Perth Red would have mocked it for being smaller than Perth Stadium and said its small size is an embarrassment to Australia's reputation.

And lets remember the reason for this review was because the people said 2.7B was too much for the gabba.
It was originally meant to be a 1B stadium, so costs nearly tripled in a few years and there is no guarentee it would not blow out even further for the gabba or the victoria park site.
All for a white elephant stadium so the afl can have a new and shiny thing in rugby league heartland.

Notice how Quirk made the new stadium 55k?

Just enough to be bigger than Lang Park. He knows it'll never sell out because Queensland is a rugby league state. It was all about giving AwFuL bragging rights. AwFuL are petty enough to make a few bribes for little things like this because they're insecure.
